Go-to Spot – Black Point

Its overtime in Miami and Mare just missed what would be a game winning field goal. On the next play, Brady hit Brown, who ran a slant deep across the middle. He caught the ball between safeties Sammy Knight and Brock Marion and raced to the end zone for the longest reception of his career.

Brady completed 24 of 34 passes for 283 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brown caught 6 passes for 131 yards for the Pats...most in overtime!

All great athletes and teams have a “Go-To” guy or a “Goto” pitch. For the Pats it’s Brady to Brown, Pedro has his slider and Bird loved the baseline 3.

While fishing in Long Island Sound near Old Lyme last year the “Sea Shell” had Black Point with “tube-and-worm” rigs as our Go-To spot.

My first year running charters out of Old Lyme, CT was a work in progress. I wanted to keep my charter size below 4 and keep my prices low so it would be reasonable family entertainment. I also made a bold guaranty...we caught Stripers or your next trip was free. We specialized in light tackle and live bait and never rigged wire or umbrella rigs.

In 40 charters we were the only one charter that could take advantage of this guaranty. It was a grey NE evening in late August. We hit Hatchets and in 15 minutes we had 15 Porgies in the live well. We went right to my favorite incoming tide deep hole. I had pulled 8 fish out of this spot in the last week, all over 42” on Eels and Porgies. After 6 hitless drifts we ran to Bartletts and fished both the inner and outer reef. We had one big fish that snapped a rod but still no fish in the boat. To make matters worst, the boat next to us had a 12 year boy yelling about a 50” Striper he caught on an umbrella rig! We stopped back at Hatchetts for more drifts but for the first time in our first summer of chartering on the Sea Shell, we were skunked!

I had another charter the next morning at 5:30 and I spent the whole night obsessing about the previous evening. I had to try something new, something different than the night before. I headed to a spot I used only on sunny days between tides – Black Point.

Over the summer Black Point saved many Charters. I used it as a last ditch spot and shelter from the wind when it was piping out of the SE. The funny thing about the place, we always pulled fish out of there. They weren’t always big but they had stripes and 1 out of 4 were over 30”.

We arrived at Black Point , shut an engine down and dropped our “Slow Down” bucket (need to get under 2kts).

Before we could get our second pole set we had a fish on. It was keeper size but we set all fish free that day. I was never so relived to get a fish in the boat. We landed over 14 fish in two hours with Tube and Worm rigs. At one point we saw Stripers pushing the bait up against the rocks, flapping around in 6” of water and got one to grab a “Habs” Pencil Popper!

I soon found myself wishing that I hit this spot the previous evening. I did learn a lesson from my errors and for the rest of the summer whenever the fishing slowed headed strait to the Point! Next summer this is going to be my Go-To Spot when things at the reefs get slow.
