Every so often a product comes through our offices that makes everyone who picks it up wonder about its possibilities out on the water. The latest product to cause a stir around here is the Ready Head from Ichthyo-SysŪ. But the real kicker is that not one person could identify the Ready Head's purpose from looking at it; they just knew it had great potential.
Ready Heads are comprised of two head-shaped pieces of clear plastic that fit together to create a hollow "bait" head. Before putting the two pieces together, anglers position the supplied eyes and scale patterns inside the pieces to give the heads some color and flash. The heads make a great platform to build either hooked offerings or teasers around.
Adding small squid bodies or hooked strip baits turns the heads into great trolling lures for small billfish and tunas. Their small size and flashy appearance should make them a great pitch bait for white marlin or sailfish as well. You can also use the head and skirt combo when loading dredges or spreader bars. As an added bonus, fly-fisherman can reverse the head to make great popper flies.
