Time to call in sick, forget about the chores, grab your 6wt. some 2x tippet and a handful of big, orange, foamy, rubberlegged flies and head for the Big Hole. The Big Bugs started hatching two days ago (hey, we all had to get some fishing in before I broadcast it on the internet!) - and today the fish were really looking for them. I aint talking a few fish here and there, I am talking about missing one fish and having another committ hari-kari trying to swallow a mouthful of foam and deer hair on a size 2 hook on the same drift. Fishing and catching are as good as it gets right now. Sunny weather, big dries, hungry trout, what else could you ask for?
I am not sure how long the hatch will last, as we havent seen runoff as of today. There were adults from Divide clear down to the Notch. Pockets of adults in the faster water over a long stretch of river. It doesnt appear that we will see the classic upstream migration of big Stoneflies this year - but if you are on the river anywhere in this stretch, you will see action on top.
Its a safe bet that the next week or two will provide some world class dry fly fisherman that is lucky enough to be in Montana, on the Big Hole.
Stay tuned for more reports as we follow the hatch
