One Day On the Kenai River

By Brian O'Keefe
(Submitted by Brian Okeefe Photography)

The Kenai River is only two hours from Anchorage and can be fished as a day trip. I joined Mike McGoveny and his father Mike, Sr. for a quick hit on the Kenai River, fishing for rainbows, dollies and one accidental, chrome bright, silver salmon.

Mike and Mike, Sr. own World Wide Angler in Anchorage and suggested that we could do a little work on the water instead of in the fly shop. Great minds think alike. It was an 18 degree morning when we went through Cooper Landing, but a bright sun was doing it's best to burn off the fog and ward off thoughts of frozen fingers and toes. We launched below Skilak Lake and motored upriver to an area where thousands of sockeye salmon were spawning, creating a food supply for a lot of rainbows and a lot of big rainbows.

These photos are just simple snap shots in "A Day in the Life" type format. Nothing fancy, just big fish, good guys, great weather and an awesome burger on the way home.
