There are many important tackle and clothing items to consider when organizing an Alaska fishing trip. The three products I've chosen to emphasize here, are just a few of the many items that should be on your equipment list. These three products were found to have outstanding perfomance when compared to simalar products.
Chota STL Wading Boots: When we got to Bear Bay Lodge I grinned when I saw several of the guides wearing the STL boot. They knew what we knew . . . comfort and value. These treated leather boots are built for all-day wading comfort. This roomy boot allows the user plenty of space for thick socks and neoprene. The grey felt is very durable. There are micro screens for draining and the quick lace system is great. They are quite light and cost under one hundred dollars.
Ultrathon Insect Repellent: Bugs are a fact of life in Alaska and many other great fishing destinations. Well, say good-by to the little demons with Ultrathon. This 3M product IS the future. I have used the spray and the lotion, and in my opinion, they are hands down, the best bug repellents ever made. The trick is in the time release formula; it's always working. At least 8 hours with the spray, and 12 hours with the lotion. The spray is around 24% Deet, but out performs the heavy duty stuff because of continuous protection. If you are hassled at the airport about insect spray like I was, remember that Ultrathon also has a lotion available, and many fly shops in Alaska sell it.
C & F Fly Boxes: Last but not least is a simple but well designed fly box. I take it everywhere. The C & F Design Waterproof Fly Box has a rubber seal between the lid and the box. When closed this box is very waterproof. This box also features nifty, micro slit foam. These slits hold your flies in place and allow you to easily slide flies in and out of the foam. These boxes are a few bucks more than the average fly box, but if you calculate the cost of rusty hooks on quality flies, then the best choice is C & F.
