The Virginia Fly Fishing Festival recently received the 2005 Joe Penfold Conservation Award from the Mason Dixon Outdoor Writers Association.
The association is a regional outdoor writers group that covers Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The Penfold award is given to a nonmember individual or group for conservation efforts.
“We are pleased to recognize the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival for their efforts to promote conservation and to introduce the general public to the sport of fly fishing,” association board Chairman Boyd Pfeiffer said in a statement. “We hope that they will continue to work on this and other worthwhile endeavors while continuing their efforts at educating the public across the Old Dominion and beyond.”
Dana Quillen, co-chair of this year’s Waynesboro festival, said after accepting the award, “We are extremely pleased and gratified to receive this prestigious award. The overall vision of the festival, now in its 5th year, is to bring businesses, conservation groups and local government together celebrating our watershed resources, increasing tourism and promoting the quiet sport of fly fishing.”
The Virginia Fly Fishing Festival will be held April 16 and 17 on the South River in Constitution Park.
