April 30th, 2005 - 1st. Annual Desert Lake Fishing Tournament FIRST ANNUAL NATIVE FISH SOCIETY DESERT LAKE FISHING TOURNAMENT sponsored by John Smeraglio at Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop and Jeff DuPont of Wild Winds Guest Ranch
When: April 30th.~May 2nd.
Where: Wild Winds Guest Ranch Just East of Grass Valley Oregon
TOURNAMENT ~ VENUE:
Wild Winds Ranch has five small lakes, all within 10 minutes from the furthest Lake of the Guest Ranch House. The Lakes small, 1 to 2 aches, but size does’nt matter because the Kamloops Trout sizes range from 12 to 30 inches in length, and can weigh-in at 1 to 8 bls. The average fish you’ll hook will be in the 20 to 25 inch category, and will run FAST and jump HIGH!!!
The Lakes are readily walked; no floating devices are required or allowed during the tournament. Wading is possible, though the edges drop off quickly on several of them, so care should be taken.
Its a beautiful place, and we’ll be the only ones there. The Ranch Guest House sleeps 10 people comfortably. Jeff DuPont and his friendly staff will provide harry meals along with a laid back atmosphere. Yes, satellite TV, a large table for the card players, and a bar thetas just steps away, stocked to your liking(except as note, liquor is on your own). These lakes are very small, averaging about one acre. Despite their size, they hold huge Kamloops trout that run hard and jump with abandon. A variety of fly angling techniques will take fish, and you will probably use them all. All contestants will fish all lakes during the three days.
Rules are stringent: no cheating on measurements, no floating devices, no weighted lines, one rod strung at a time, and more. Judges will roam the competition. All rules and further information are detailed at www.nativefishsociety. org.
The cost is $650 per angler. The cost includes rod fees; a sample of appropriate fly patterns from Idlewyld Flies; lodging; lunch and dinner on Saturday, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Sunday and breakfast and lunch on Monday; refreshment stations spread liberally among the lakes; and all the fun you can have. Net proceeds go to support the conservation program of the Native Fish Society. Limited to 10 people. Contribute to the mission of the Native Fish Society while enjoying three days of great fishing—you cannot ask for more! Reservations are on a first-come, firstserved basis.
