The  national competition goal is to determine the best fly fishers Canada has to offer. The competion is only open to Canadians.  The competion is scheduled for September 19th to 24th in the Cambell River area.  This is a great time of the year to visit Vancouver Island.  Top contenders are eligible to represent Canada at the annual World Fly Fishing Championships and Conservation Symposium, the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships, and the Oceania Fly Fishing Championships.  This is an interesting and fun competion and Symposium to attend and will not only entertain, learn and inform.

The 3rd National Fly Fishing Championships and Conservation Symposium will be held at Campbell River in late September, in conjunction with the Roderick Haig-Brown Festival. It will involve saltwater fly fishing for salmon from beaches, stillwater fly fishing for trout, and river fly fishing for salmon and trout.

The first NFFC was held in 2003 at Russell, Manitoba, in the Manitoba Parkland, and the 2004 event at Kenauk, Quebec. These competitions are conducted under the auspices of Fly Fishing Canada, a national, not for profit organization that promotes conservation and the sport of fly fishing.

All competitions are based on creating friendship and understanding as expressed through the Olympic ideal. Winning teams receive gold, silver and bronze medals, and the top three contenders also receive an individual gold, silver and bronze medal. In addition, the overall winner is awarded the prestigious Doug Austin Memorial Trophy, which honours one of FFC’s early members.

Conservation Symposium

A Conservation Symposium is an important part of every major fly fishing championship. Fly Fishing Canada is delighted that this year’s Championship is being held at Campbell, River, British Columbia which is doing so much to preserve and enhance the environment of Vancouver Island and its waters.

This is great opportunity to see some great fishers and  to observe the good work being done.
