Ever had an overdue fishing rod?? It seems in Illinois anyone can have an overdue library book, but an overdue fishing rod is possible only in Granite City and four other metro-east communities.
The Six Mile Regional Library in Granite City signed up nine months ago to get free fishing rods and reels from the Illinois Department of National Resources. The fishing equipment can be checked out of the library the same way as a book.
The rods can be checked out for a week, the same time allowed for a DVD or video. The loan also can be renewed. But for those who forget, the overdue fine is the same as for a movie, $1 a day. So far, fishing rod loans in Granite City have gone well, with only one problem --- getting the equipment back. :>) (Maybe the fishing has been great?)
Anyone over the age of 15 is required to bring a current fishing license when checking out a rod and reel. Fishing rod borrowers receive a bag containing artificial bait, a hook, sinkers and other supplies. Also included are pamphlets on fishing skills, such a knot tying and hook baiting. Borrowers can keep the bag of supplies.
Fishing rods and reels are maintained and repaired free by the Department of Natural Resources.
