Well, Well, Well..........Fishing Report for September 1, 2005….. It’s finally here.  Fly only season.  Yep, that’s right.  Today is the first of 61 days of flyfishing only in the Upper Rogue River.  Does that mean the hard core Nazi bait huckers will concede the next two months of fishing, hang it up and follow the law?  Of course not.  There will be plenty of lawless poachers out there for the next two months.  REPORT THEM!!!! (1-800-452-7888)

But………..the shoulder to shoulder traffic will decline substantially.  The moral decay should halt a bit, and over all quality of experience should change from Hamms light to Black Butte Porter.  Why don’t I ever find Micro Brew containers on the bank?  Hhhuuuuummmm……

So, if you’re reading this and thinking to your self any of the above comments are a bit extreme, consider this.  A special river closure, the only one of its kind in the United States, exists on the Upper Rogue River.  The bait community created such gigantic numbers of illegal angling/ and other citations the enforcement couldn’t keep up with it.  That’s impressive, and that is in fact extreme.  Here is a quote from the Mail Tribune regarding the special closure.

A mile-long stretch of the upper Rogue River closes to all angling at 7:00 p.m. beginning today as part of a new effort to crack down against illegal angling and drunken lawlessness that has tarnished the upper Rogue’s most productive salmon fishing holes.”

Now…. if you are part of this crowd that cannot play well with others, before you fire off an email to me calling me an elitist, recall that all fly anglers on the upper Rogue River have compromised their 61 days of solitude by allowing all anglers to use a spinning rod and a bubble with flies.  This allows anglers of all ages, sizes, skill levels, and economic back round to compete for our river’s run of summer steelhead.

Also recall that November 1st is a date when all methods of artificials can be used.  Spinners, Spoons, Slinkies with yarn, Corkies, Plugs, and etc.  Hundreds of gear options are available to anglers on November 1st.  Just Not Bait.  That is a great compromise for fisherman AND the fish.  Its makes sense for the future of the run.  Still, with hundreds of gear options after fly season the “cannot play well with others” crowd continues to press for more river miles of bait fishing, higher kill limits on wild salmon, less regard for the safe release of summer steelhead all the while in denial that the river trash on the banks and the river bottom comes from their lawless associates.  A no compromise mentality to the fullest.  How perfect and ironic that fly season ends on Halloween.

To all my responsible bait fishing friends, I apologize for the blanket statements and stereotypes.  To the rest of the bait mob………well this Bud’s for you. (But please, take the can when you’re done!)

Good Luck on the Water…………………
