“Snook Alley Slammer” by Kevin Cooke
With me stuck in the shop all day my fishing is mostly done at night. Having “Snook Alley” in my back yard isn’t all that bad. Night snook fishing dock lights with my 8wt has become a real joy for me. With summer here I concentrate my time around dock lights around passes and inlets. With snook spawning, I like to use flies with a nice long or high profile to mimic baitfish. This fly I named “Snook Alley Slammer” has been working great for me lately, so I would like to share it with you. It is real simple and shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to tie.
Materials: Hook- Daiichi 2546 #4 (Or different size to match the hatch)
Eyes- Medium Bead Chain- Red
Body- Medium Yarn Estaz- Pearl
Tail- White Polar Fiber
Thread- White 3/0
Step 1 - Attach thread to hook. Then attach medium red bead chain eyes.
Step 2- Move thread to back of hook. Then attach a 1” tail of white Polar Fiber. Add cement if desired.
Step 3-Tie in end of yarn pearl estaz. Move thread to eye of hook.
Step 4- Rotate vise and wrap estaz toward the hook eye. Secure, whip finish, and add cement. Done!
Give this fly a try in your area. Feel free to add different materials and experiment. The great thing about fly tying is that, only for a few rules, you are only limited to your imagination! In the wintertime, I will down size this fly to a #6 and use white Flash-N-Slinky for the tail. It mimics glass minnows and shrimp.
UPDATE!!!
many customers have been doing well with snook on the beach with this fly. Tie the fly on a size 4!
