FULL ITINERARY - CONWAY BOWMAN TROUT AND DORADO TRIP
November 5th Arrival in Salta city. Today we will transfer to Las Lajitas and start fishing the Juramento River. We will float the Upper Juramento River from around 2pm until late afternoon. The upper Juramento River is very clear and we will use floating lines with 12' leaders tapered to 12 lbs with 12" of 20 lb wire. We will have a 9' # 6 rod handy to nymph for Sabalo (Golden Dorado favorite baitfish). These fish can reach up to 8 lbs and put a really nice battle with long runs on trout rods. They are very difficult to catch though. We strongly recommend to use fingerless sun gloves or similar to protect hands from casting all day long with large and heavy rods. Transfer to the Lodge and dinner. Recommended Rods: 8/9 wt rod with WF Tropical (Bonefish or Tarpon line) we may add a detachable sink tip. Leaders 4’ to 12’ tapered to 12/20 lbs with 20 to 30 lb wire. November 6th Breakfast at Las Lajitas. Today we will transfer to the lower Juramento River. It may be really hot so it is important to have flats style clothing + wading shoes or flats booties. The river wide but casts are not long. In these stretches is where the biggest Dorado are caught. Be prepared to battle a monster. All day float. Recommended Rods: 8/9/10 wt rod with WF Tropical (Bonefish or Tarpon line) we may add a detachable sink tip. Leaders 4’ to 7’ tapered to 12/20 lbs with 20 to 30 lb wire.
November 7th Today we will drive to a private ranch on Parque Nacional del Rey to fish the fabled Rio Dorado. It is an hour drive to the river plus another hour walking upstream. We will then wade our way back to the car fly fishing on the best spots on the river. Rio Dorado is a small river, with crystal clear pools that hold average Dorado between 3 to 6 lbs, but every day we hook fish way bigger! Recommended Rods: 9’ # 6/7 with Tropical bonefish lines and 9’ leaders tapered to 12 lbs and 10 to 15 lb wire tippets.
November 8th Breakfast at Las Lajitas. Today we will transfer to the lower Juramento River. Another stretch where we can find XL Dorado. Recommended Rods: 8/9/10 wt rod with WF Tropical (Bonefish or Tarpon line) we may add a detachable sink tip. Leaders 4’ to 7’ tapered to 12/20 lbs with 20 to 30 lb wire.
TRANSFER DAY - November 9th Today we will transfer from Salta to Chime Lodge in Patagonia. We will drive from the Lodge to the airport to catch a flight from Salta to Buenos Aires and then the flight from Buenos Aires to Patagonia. We will arrive at Chime Lodge around 6 pm for dinner
November 10th AToday we'll float the lower Chimehuin River from town to the confluence with the Collon Cura river. It is a long float but very, very productive. Expect to catch large rainbow and brown trout. Back to Lodge Dinner Recommended rods: 6/7 wt with floating lines and 7’ to 12’ leaders or T-200 line and 3' leader.
November 11th Breakfast Our day starts at the Rinconada Bridge, above the Collon Cura river. This is big water, with fish from 12’ to several pounds. There are brown and rainbow trout and Perca, our native fish. We’ll float most of this river and we’ll stop and wade the many channels formed around the islands in the river. There are red stag and guanacos on the banks. It is best fished with streamers and either a sink tip or sinking shooting heads with big streamers or Pancora crab imitations, however, if a good hatch occurs or we spot activity on top, we’ll switch to floating lines. During warm days we also use the Stimulator-Prince combo. There are great caddis hatches late afternoon. Back to Lodge Dinner Recommended rods: 5/6/7/8 wt with floating lines and 9’ to 12’ leaders, sink tips type 130 to 200 grain or shooting heads with 4’ leaders. November 12th Breakfast Today we’ll drive to Tromen Lake, below the shadows of Lanin Volcano and 3 miles from the Chilean border. We will fish the Lake for trophy brown, rainbow and brook trout. This is the place where we change our customer’s perspective of fishing a Lake. We’ll fish from our rafts casting to submerged logs, weed patches, obstacles and boulders where big trout live. There is a tiny spring creek that can be fished while we cook you an Argentinean Asado (barbeque) for small brookies or you may fish the outlet of this creek for trophy size brook trout up to 7 lbs. If you are in the mood of walking, there is a 40 minute walk to the mouth of the Malleo river. Fishing with dry flies sometimes produces non stop action for rainbow trout and large rainbows or browns early or late in the season. Back to Lodge Dinner Recommended rods: 5/6/7 wt with floating lines and 9’ to 12’ leaders, sink tips type 130 to 200 grain or shooting heads with 4’ leaders with wooly buggers, muddler minnows, bunny leeches, etc. November 13th Breakfast Today we’ll float the Chimehuin river, from Piedra del viento (200 yds upstream from Chime Lodge) to the Military Bridge. It is an all day float with a lunch brake around 1 pm. We’ll fish the pools that made Junin de los Andes a world class destination for fly anglers (Piedras Blancas, Currhue, Parrot pools, to name a few). A lot of fishing is done from the rafts but we’ll stop at the best spots and wade fish Back to Lodge Farewell dinner with Barbequed Lamb Recommended rods: 5/6 wt with floating lines and 9’ to 12’ Leaders, or sink tips for the streamers
