Rio Corrientes - March 26th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Fair
Rain, rain, rain, go away.  Come back some other day.  In the afternoon, Oscar showed us his......,   Chrispy G. y Geraldo hooked and landed poqueno dorado.  True to form, they were golden.  Justiana Campa, AKA Fly Fishing Patagonia is in Tierra del Fuego getting his sea run brown trout fix.  Meanwhile, Chrispy y Jerry are not drunk, they are only drinking.

Phil y Mike are putting on a clinic.  They boated about 20 golden tigers while toasting Argenina's vino.  Si, si.

Meanwhile, Senior Bushly is holding the fort in Estancia Craig.  If you want current Missouri River info, don't e-mail Chrispy or Geraldo because they simply don't know what's going in Craig at the momento.

Ciao for now.  A full report of the awesome Patagonia aventura is forthcoming.  As you might expect, internet es limitado.  That means, we're not trying to communicate.

Argentina - March 4th, 2009
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    71 °   FISHING: Excellent
Dorado fly fishing season is now open and the
first fly fishing report of the season is
very promising.  We floated 3 veryproductive stretches of the Juramento River and waded the banks of Dorado River withexcellent results.   We had a strange season last year with lots of rain (a 30 yr event) that changed the course  of the river, altered banks and destroyed islands andbridges and the fishing really didn't start until the last two weeks of December.

Where a Wild on the Fly magazine hosted group caught and released many fish including a very strong 12.3 kg Dorado caught by Steve Duckett using his unique Bouncer fly.

Fish seemed to be very productive with small "machitos" or little male Dorado up to 10 lbs being the most active and very large females getting ready to spawn and very aggressive.

The tributaires are crystal clear due to the lack of rain for the past 5 weeks and small Dorado (average 20") are caught in every single pocket of water.  Some large fish up to 11 lbs were also caught.  It is really challenging to land a 10 lb bar of gold while using a 5 or 6 wt rod on fast current!  We have only fished the cosest stretch of the tributary to town and fishing was superb, we are looking forward to taste what the upper stretches have to offer.

The sight of Toucans, Pecaris, Tapirs, storks, wild orchids and knowing that a Jaguar is hidden in the jungle high in this tributaries is truly amazing.

Lago Tromen - November 24th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    58 °   FISHING: Excellent
We fished Lake Tromen a few days since opening season.  Fishing was spectacular.  We found rainbow trout still spawning on the mouth of Malleo River for a mile or so downstream.  There fish were doing their thing and not really interested on our flies, except of course, to small egg patterns that were followed and sometimes attacked viciously.

The outlet of the spring creek was our top producer.  Deep swinging a large streamer produced several large rainbow and brook trout.  Biggest brookie was a 6 lb beauty.  The spring creek itself full of tiny brookies and all the easter shore had rising fish to BWO's.  Fishing was fun to say the least.  We either floated casting to the dropp off, or waded the beach sight fishing for cruisers or risers.  I had an 18" brookie that rose to my# 16 Parachute Royal Wulff.

Chimehuin - November 24th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    52 °   FISHING: Excellent
We floated the Chimehuin all the way from the mouth to the confluence with the Collon Cura.

The fishing can only be described as excellent.  The upper reaches of the Chimehuin was a lot of fun.  We sight fished for pods of rainbow that were gorging themselves after spawning.  A small pink egg patter proved irresistible.

The river had a lot of water and was not really good to fish from the raft.  The high water was somehow a problem but this will ensure a great season, even in the warmest months.

The mouth (la Boca del Chimehuin) was full of rainbows on the shallows, large brown trout deep in the pools and Atlantic landlocked salmon on the riffles and at the tail of pools.  Rainbows and landlocks were active.  Again, an egg pattern was irresitible to both.

The lower Chimehuin was a fishbowl.  There were active fish everywhere.  Steve Jensen, from UT caught a 10 lb brown, I had a 6 lb brown and we caught lots of rainbows and browns from 18" to 22"

We fished mostly rubber leg streamers on 200 grain lines which are great for high, fast moving water.

Lago Verde - November 24th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    42 °   FISHING: Good
Fishing Lake Verde was TOUGH.  We cast for hours and there was no response to our flies, until....

Steve Jansen (again), caught a very large brown trout after probably 1000 casts. It was worth all the effort.  This large, fat, 9 lb brown was a tough fighter and a beauty.   After a little while Steve caught another brown trout around 20"

As for myself, I was hopeless until we were almost at the take out and hooked a 16" rainbow that I didn't land.

We cast to an XL brown on the Rio Verde without much success, but trying to full this "log" was lots of fun.

Malleo - November 24th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    36 °   FISHING: Great
We fished the Malleo despite the high water and it was really good.  There were lots of fish, as usual, and the best technique was either a dropper/hopper or an indicator nymph combo.  We hooked rainbow and brook trout from 14" to 20"

Joe Mc Manus, from GA hooked a very, very large brown on a Double Humpy but the 2X leader didn't hold the weight of the fish nor the strong current.

Even though high water was a nuisance, it will keep good water flows and temperature for a long, healthy season.

Alumine - November 24th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    41 °   FISHING: Excellent
First day of the season:  We floated the Alumine and the fishing was incredible.  Lots, lots and lots of fish on streamers and dries.  AMAZING.  We fished the Alumine and Collon Cura rivers until it rained and was blown out with heavy rains for 5 days.

I can write a book on the Alumine and Collon Cura rivers and will always write the same.  This is one of the best rivers in the world.

Limay - December 28th, 2007

Santa Claus Visits Patagonia -- Dec 07-Jan 08 Holiday Fishing Report

Over the holidays, Fly Fishing Patagonia’s guests received large and numerous gifts from the trout rich waters of Northern Patagonia, Argentina. We had 4 different groups scattered over a warm and pleasant holiday week.

Our private section on the Limay River was fishing average with 20+ fish days and browns and rainbows in the 16-19 inch range. The more experienced anglers all caught fish from 3-7 pounds. However, the fish of the week goes to our friend and well known angler Daniel Beilinson who landed a 12 pound brown trout on 12/29/07. This gorgeous, extremely thick male was well nourished from pancora crabs and prolific December caddis.

On Jan 3 we had famous argentine angler Ricardo Pisarenko return to fish for several days. You may have seen him in various publications. He’s the bearded gentleman smoking a pipe, holding the collectors item rod or shotgun and looking more distinguished then the King of Spain.

But you don’t have to be an accomplish angler to catch fish in Patagonia. Over Christmas, another group floated the Caleufu River for 3 nights, 4 days with Fly Fishing Patagonia guide, Alex Plaza.  Here is what one angler had to say:

“Alex was a first rate guide.  One of the best I have experienced.  Patient, professional, fun, knowledgeable.  I brought a lady who had never been fly fishing before and Alex did a fabulous job ensuring that she had a great time while allowing me live out my own fly fishing fantasy.  Caught more fish than I expected -30+ fish per day!! and a bunch in the 19-21" range.  What a fantastic trip. Top shelf accommodations and dining.  Really exceeded my expectations.”  Rob Born, 12/30/07

Also on Jan 3 we had 8 beginner and intermediate anglers spread out on different sections of the Rio Manso. All anglers landed multiple rainbows, but the prizes were the nice brown trout in the 18-22 inch range. Several of these browns were caught with dries.

On Jan 2 we had another super day on Fonck Lake with 4 anglers who caught an average of 20 fish each, exclusively on dry flies of various patterns.

Patagonia Argentina still has some of the finest trout fishing in the world. Every angler that leaves us saying it was the best week of fishing they’ve ever had. They also say it was the best trip they have ever done. With that combination, don’t risk your vacation time with another guide service.

Collón-Cura - December 14th, 2007
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    63 °   FISHING: Excellent
The Collon Cura is one of the most beautiful and productive rivers in the world.  It has a lot of different options, from swinging large streamers to dead drifting a # 16 BWO under the willows.  We float this river at least twice a week with our customers and it produces lots of trout.  During these past weeks and since its still early season, the water was higher than in the summer months but nevertheless it was really easy to fish from a raft and wadeable in most of its runs.  We caught lots of fish from 12" to 6 lbs.  and fished mostly with a Stimulator and a dropper while drifting until a specific hatch occured.  Then we switched to the dry fly de jour.  There are some pools that we know are best fished with a heavy sink tip and a streamer.  These pools are home to large trout.  Biggest trout we caught was a stunning 6 lb brown that fell for a # 16 Parachute Adams.   I lost a larger brown while trying to row and reel in.....

Rio Alumine - April 2nd, 2007
supplied by: Andes Outfitters
RECORDED:    63 °   FISHING: Excellent
We floated the Alumine from Pilo Lil to the confluence with the Malleo river during 3 days.  The weather was Ok, but it was very windy the first day of the float.  We fished mostly with a Stimulator/dropper combo with great success.  We caught many rainbow and brown trout from10" to 22" .  the highlight however was matching the hatch during mayfly hatches.  During one of these hatches I caught an Atlantic Landlocked salmon, my first on the Alumine, it was about 18" but I loved it.  He took the stimulator.  One client hooked a 5 lb Perca and two really large but skinny rainbows, they were 28" long.  We don't see rainbows in this shape until December, but they seemed like they just spawned, strange.  Joe Stipe, from VA hooked and released a brown trout estimated at 9 1/2 lbs.  he hooked this beauty on a white zonker.
