Week of Aug. 21 - Aug. 28, 2010
Weather Conditions: The week started out with some high winds as the remainder of a tropical wave pushed through; once it passed we had nearly perfect conditions.
Winds: Out of the ESE at an average of 9 mph, Aug. 21 and 22 saw average wind speeds of 22 mph while the tropical wave was pushing through.
Air Temperature: 83 - 86 Degrees
Water Temperature: 84 Degrees
Tides: The week began with high tide at 7:43 a.m. progressing to 12:04 p.m. by week’s end.
Moon Phase: Full Moon on Tuesday, August 24
Great fishing conditions most of the week allowed for some serious variety in species. Guests enjoyed not only catching the top three game species – bonefish, permit, and tarpon – but also tuna, barracuda, cubera snapper, grouper, horse eye and yellow fin jacks, and red tail snapper. It was a great reminder for us as well as our guests that sometimes variety is just what the doctor ordered. By allowing flexibility within your fishing schedule, you open up endless opportunities for a variety of saltwater species.
Turneffe Flats had the pleasure of hosting its first ever fishing group from Poland. Maciey, Legen, Jan, Grzegorz, Piotr, and Michal traveled for two full days in order to join us for a week of saltwater fly-fishing. These six anglers enjoyed the variety that the Turneffe Atoll could offer, selecting to fish for different species each day. Within the group a total of seven tarpon were jumped. Including one that our guide Dubs said without any doubt, “Was at least 180-pounds; possibly could have broke 200.” Although none of the tarpon were landed, these anglers enjoyed every minute of seeing these prehistoric giants leap out of the water as if they were trying to fly. The group tried their luck at permit fishing, but did not catch the attention of any willing to take. Bonefish presented themselves as they so often do with an eager and almost determined attitude about taking and running with a properly presented offering. Cubera snapper, horse eyed and yellow fin jacks, barracuda, grouper, and red tail snapper were all willing to grab a good presentation. One of the many highlights for the group was seeing Jan hook and eventually land a barracuda that measured about 5-1/2 feet. We have no doubt these gentlemen will return to Turneffe Flats for another saltwater trip as group leader Maciey said, “The best saltwater fishing we have ever experienced, we will return next year to try and find the ones that remained out of reach or got away.”
Ray M. from Philadelphia and his cameraman Joshua E. from Boothwyn, Penn. came in search of permit. Ray’s goal for the week was to land his first-ever permit and capture it all on film. Landing your first permit is challenging enough, but Ray felt that he could manage the challenge of landing his first permit on film. The first couple of days Ray had multiple opportunities, but no hook ups. Yet, he said that “permit fishing is measured in opportunities, eventually I am going to do everything right, or one of these permit are going to make a mistake. Either way, however it happens, I am going to be ready.” It was the following day that Ray experienced what it was like to do everything right and get paid for it. He hooked up with a permit. Even though this fish busted Ray off within seconds, he was hooked and found a new determination to achieve his goal. That night, Ray was a little tough on himself, feeling as though he had possibly missed his only opportunity for the week. In a lull in the table talk during dinner, his cameraman Josh told him, “No worries, there is going to be another opportunity; and when it comes you will be ready.” The following day Ray had that opportunity, his guide Willie put him on a tailing permit and within seconds that fish had seen, turned, and eaten Ray’s offering. The battle was on but Ray came out victorious, he had landed his first permit and caught the whole event on film.
Larry C. and Thomas D. visited from Richmond and Sugarland, Tex., respectively. These two anglers took full advantage of the weather that Mother Nature was offering. One of the days gave anglers an opportunity to fish locations that normally are out of reach or too rough to fish because of ocean swells and winds. With the swell and wind down, these anglers chased tuna outside the reef. Both Larry and Tom had the unique opportunity to hook and land tuna while fishing outside of the reef. Double digit bonefish days were not uncommon; in fact, it seemed to be the rule rather than the exception. Larry and Thomas caught multiple barracuda that provided lightning fast runs and a couple great jumps as well. Permit were a topic of conversation for these anglers as they wanted to feel and understand what it was like to have one on the end of their line. Without hesitation, their guide Michael took them in search of permit. It was shortly after leaving the dock that Michael put these two on a great school of permit. Within the hour they understood what it felt like to spot, cast, see the permit turn and then take. They completed the feeling by landing their first permit . . . not on their first cast, but on their first attempt at permit fishing.
Chad H. and Stewart A. visited from Franklin, Tenn. for their first saltwater fly-fishing lodge experience. These two anglers enjoyed stalking bonefish while walking the flats as well as from the deck of the skiff. Bonefish were brought to hand each day with a couple of days’ counts in the double digits. Stewart landed one of the larger bonefish that this team hooked during the week. Both anglers tried their skill and luck at permit, although a couple did turn and look at their offering they did not persuade any to eat.
There is still time to get in on some superior fishing while taking advantage of our Summer/Fall 2-for-1 Specials. Two anglers fish for the price of a Single Supplement Package or $2,671.20 (including taxes) per person! The 2-for-1 deal remains in place until the week before Christmas.

just returned from a trip to southern belize, with 6 clients for 4 days of permit fishing and we had a new moon tide that kept the full amount of water off the flats , but still had 10 to 15 legitimate shots at permit each day. With the low water it kept them from doing their Belizean tail show compared to normal but still got lots of great shots and the final score was 7 hooked 3 landed with 2 being hooked, but lost, in th 20 lbs plus catagory, all in all everyone was very happy!!! Ambergris Caye continues to fish well with the usual hungry packs of bones that are not being molested yet. The permit fishing has been strong with 5 landed in the last two weeks. The tarpon are still spotty but the guides report seeing lots of bait which means it is just a matter of time before we start seeing lots of the silver sides!!

Tarpon are being found consistently now. we have had clients hooking tarpon daily, the landing of some of these monster is the hard part though.
permit on the flats have been user friendly, two hooked last week and a couple broken off!!!
bonefish are spooky becuase of the upcoming full moon.but still can be fun and challenging, especially if you run further than all the usual spots.
