Bulkley River - October 6th, 2004
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    55 °   FISHING: Fair
I fished the Bulkley River near Smithers BC for steelhead for 7 days.

I floated three sections of the river including Telkwa to Smithers, Quick to Telkwa and Walcott to Quick.  The river was high but dropping and was clear throughout.

The weather was sunny and clear for the first four days.  Very cold mornings, warm days.  The last three days were cloudy and showery and mild with mild overnight temperatures.

The fishing was spotty the whole week.  We would hook good numbers (3 to 6) on some days and then get blanked the next.  As the week progressed, the fishing slowed down to normal steelheading where we hoped for a grab or two a day.  Sink tips were the primary producers as there was fair amount of pressure and not a ton of fish.  Most anglers were fishing tips.

I did fish a dry on several occassions and rose 2 that I couldn't get to come back.  When fishing tips, I was using a blue version of my water weasel series and this fly was extremely effective.  Any normal sized full dressed winter type fly would have worked, however.

If you plan on going to this wonderful steelhead destination, don't hesitate to come in and talk to me.  I'd be glad to hook you up with info on water, floats and such.

Tofino - July 28th, 2004
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Great
Location: Clayoquot Sound near Tofino British Columbia, halfway up the west side of Vancouver Island.

Time Fished: 7/17 – 7/19

Summary:   The July fishing trip to Weigh West Marine Resort served to be another incredible experience for those involved. Fishing the virgin waters of Clayoqout sound is a flyfishing adventure not soon forgotten.

The salmon fishing nearly takes a back seat to the incredible back drop of ancient forest that plummet into the saltwater, kelp forests that hint of an underwater paradise for marine life, and feeding Orca only several hundred yards away.

This year the fish were larger than average with yours truly landing one Coho pushing 15 pounds. Many fish averaged 8 – 10 pounds with the second largest tipping the scales at nearly 12. Graeme, the guide, hit a 24 pound King that fell for a pink clouser cast near a kelp bed. Many rockfish were caught with several pushing 5 lbs.

This year only a few fish were caught casting however, there is something to be said for a 10 pound Coho charging a trolled fly only feet behind your motor in full view. Nearly all the fish hooked ran into my backing this year and some nearly spooled me.  Anglers caught anywhere from 6 to 15+ Coho a day.

Patterns Fished:  Pink clousers tied sparse and only 2 – 3 1/2 inches long were key! Orange Clousers also had their place. The most effective bucktailed flies were again Clouser Minnows in Pink and Polar Bear Hair Wing flies in purple or pink. Check out the photo gallery for pics!
