Troublesome Creek - July 20th, 2006
supplied by: Cutthroat Anglers
RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Excellent
Our private stretch of Troublesome Creek is fishing fantastic! The recent rainstorms flush dirty water into the system, which is actually a good thing. The murky water allows anglers to use gaudy flies and larger tippets. The trout are also more aggressive when the clarity is not gin clear. We had a trip last week and the anglers through nothing but Stimis and Caddis patterns. Its quite a sight to see a 24-inch trout rise to a Stimi in a stream that barely wider than your rod is long.

Arkansas River - July 20th, 2006
supplied by: Cutthroat Anglers
RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Great
Its time to float the Ark! Anywhere from Johnson's Village (near BV) downstream past Salida is the place to be. The flows are manageable now, so fishing is at its prime. The state turns off the water on August 15th, so I suggest taking advantage of the floatable conditions while they last. Right now, we're mainly throwing dry-dropper and double dry fly rigs. The Caddis and PMDs are thick, and we are turning a surprising number of fish on hopper patterns. The trout are rarely over 16-inches in the Ark; however, their lack of size is quickly forgotten when a trout lies ready to eat behind almost every rock. As long as the weather cooperates, the fishing should remain strong until the middle of August. The upper stretches of the Ark (near Leadville) are also fishing well. We are starting to see Green Drakes, and the Caddis continue to be thick in the afternoons. The only draw back is the crowds. If you're not finding fish in the usual places, be sure to hit the shallow riffles because the fish seem to be moving into the faster water insearch of cooler temps. Again, dry-dropper set ups with a hopper or Stimi trailed by a tiny bead headed nymph is going to be your best bet.

A 5-6 wt rod is needed. Trout are hungry and looking for black whooly buggers, midges #20/22, and greg's emergers grey and black, #18 peach egg patterns, tan serendipity. Trout are really hungry. You will enjoy fishing here.

FISHING: Good
Flows: 125 Parshall

Clarity:  Good

Water Temperature: High 30’s to Low 40’s

Major Food Organisms: Midges

Hatches: Midges

14 Day forecast: Look for fair to good fishing with tiny nymphs. Egg patterns will remain effective for the next two weeks.

Tips and Other Information:  The Colorado River is fishing “fair to good” below Parshall. Flows are getting low producing some very technical fishing.  Below the Williams Fork confluence, nymphing has been productive with a #22 Barr’s Pure Midge Larva dropped with a #22 Sparkle Wing RS II, and/or #20 Mercury Pheasant Tails. The brown trout spawn is winding down quickly, nevertheless, egg patterns will be effective for another two weeks in the post-spawn period.  Anglers will find some sporadic dry fly fishing in the slow pools in the above the Sun Set Ranch on tiny midge patterns, as well as, the Parshall Hole.  #26 Parachute Adams, and #22 Cannon’s Bunny Midge Cluster will fool these selective trout with regularity.

Effective Patterns: #16 Nuclear  Egg, #18 Flashback Mercury PT, #18 Mighty Mite Baetis, #16-20 Dorsey’s Mercury Baetis, #18-20 Bead Head Buckskin, #20-22 Sparkle Dun, #16 Elk Hair Caddis, #20-22 Black Beauty, #20 Mercury Midge, and #20-22 Sparkle Wing RS II.

Big Thompson River - May 10th, 2005
supplied by: Trout Trips
RECORDED:    72 °   FISHING: Great
The Big Thompson River begins its journey on the east side of the Continental Divide in Rocky Mountain National Park. As the snow melts from the drainages in this area, the Big T picks up volume and begins its journey. The Big T can be fished as a small stream at Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park with 6-12" for cutthroats, brook, and brown trout. The Big T moves west into Lake Estes and from there, moves through Big Thompson Canyon towards the Loveland area. Our property at Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch offers great, WILD trout fishing with access to several trout lakes, one of which holds large rainbows.

Midges and bwo's are active. Grey Drakes will soon be coming on. #14 prince nymphs, bh fb hare's ears, adams, pheasant tails, jujubees, golden stones. Water levels are bumping up each day. End of May and first of June look for run-off. Water clarity off color below the town of Drake.

Eagle River - October 28th, 2004
supplied by: Gorsuch Outfitters
FISHING: Good
River Level Check the level of the Eagle River.  The Eagle is low and clear.  Fishing is good the entire way to Gypsum.

Hatches Midges, and BWO's Fly Patterns DRY: Much of the prolific dry fly hatches have slowed and fishing is much more productive nymphing.  Try attractors like PMX16, Wulffs16-20, H&L Variant 16-20, Hoppers12-14 and other Terrestrials like the Fat Albert 10-14.

NYMPHS:  Using very small nymphs almost like winter or spring fishing is the most productive way to fish on the Eagle River right now.  Try patterns like Barrs Emerger 18-22, Zebra Midge Black and Tan 18-22, WD40 Brown 18-22, Blue Prince 18, Copper Bobs in a variety of colors 18-20, Disco Midge 20-24, Flash Back PT in Brown and Olive 18-22.  Also, never forget about the 20 Incher pattern which will take fish any month of the year.  We prefer the one's with rubber legs and a tungsten bead.

STREAMERS:  In the past week streamers have become an effective way to catch fish in the local rivers.  Autumn Splendor in a size 6 as well as the old favorite the Wooly Bugger has the fish on the feed.

TIPS:  Try fishing a prince or aggrivator nymph of the back of your streamer for some unbelieveable action this Fall.
