Gore Creek - October 28th, 2004
supplied by: Gorsuch Outfitters
FISHING: Good
River Level Check the flows on Gore Creek.  Flows are low and clear right now. Hatches Many of the major hatches have slowed for the month of August.  You may find some fish in the evening feeding on the surface.  Nymphing is the most productive method this month. Fly Patterns DRIES: Try fishing any number of Hoppers and attractors in the fast water if you are committed to dry fly fishing.

NYMPHS:  Copper Bob in Copper 18, 20, Black Copper Bob 18,20 Present Tails 16, 18 any number of attractor nymphs like Prince, Hares Ear, Pheasant Tails in 16-18. All of the midge stuff is starting to work well. Zebra Midge 20, 22 , Small Pheasant Tails 20, 22, Prince Nymph no bead 18, 20 etc. During this time of year try fishing a tungsten beaded fly and a non beaded fly for effective nymphing.

TIPS:  Try fishing in the small pockets created by the big boulders with short casts and heavy flies.  You will be surprised at the water some fish will sit in.

The best fishing is from the confluence of Red Sandstone Creek to the confluence with the Eagle River.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Taylor River - October 13th, 2004
supplied by: Blue Quill Angler
FISHING: Good
Current Conditions

Flow: 180 Almont

Clarity: Excellent

Water Temperature: Low to mid 40’s

Major Food Organisms: Midges, and baetis

Hatches: Midges, and baetis

14 Day Forecast: Look for excellent flows and great fishing between the dam and Almont. Most of the major hatches are done now, with the exception of baetis and midges.

Tips and Other Information: On the lower river small Sparkle Wing RS II’s and Mercury Pheasant Tails have been productive in the afternoon when the baetis are moving. The nights are getting cool and the best fishing is once again between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. As far as the Hog Pen is concerned, fish with your standard tail water patterns. A #20 Pheasant Tail or #20 Barr’s Emerger will move plenty of fish. Look for the brown trout to start spawning within the next two weeks and for egg patterns to become effective along the entire Taylor drainage.

Effective Patterns: #16-18 Mysis, #18-22 Pheasant Tails, #18-20 Bead Head Pheasant Tails, #16 Rubber Legged Copper Johns, #18-20 Bead Hare’s Ear, #20-22 Mercury Baetis, #20-22 Sparkle Wing RS-II, #20-22 Mercury Midge, #20-22 San Juan Emerger, #22 Brassie, and #22-24 Dorsey’s Black Beauty.

Gunnison River - October 13th, 2004
supplied by: Blue Quill Angler
FISHING: Good
Current Conditions

Flow: 363 cfs, Gunnison

Clarity: Good

Water Temperature: Mid to high 50’s

Major Food Organisms: Caddis, midges, tricos, and baetis

Hatches: Caddis midges, tricos, and baetis

14 Day Forecast: Look for excellent fishing in the weeks to come. Anglers can expect excellent dry fly fishing in the 6 miles above Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Tips and Other Information: Plan on excellent fishing between Almont and Blue Mesa Reservoir. I can’t ever remember the Gunnison River fishing this well—it is on unbelievable!! “Attractors” such as H & L Variants, Royal Wulffs, and Renegades have been moving lots of fish in riffled water that is 18-24 inches deep. Nymphing has been productive too, with a Barr’s Tung Stone trailed by a Sparkle Wing RS II. Lots of nice browns and rainbows averaging 13-15 inches. There is a nice baetis hatch every afternoon, and lots of fish are rising to these tiny blue winged olives. Streamers are also moving some nice browns on the lower river between McCabes and Turkey Creek.

Effective Patterns: #18 Bead Head Prince, #20 Mercury Midge, #20 Mercury Black Beauty, #10 Barr’s Tung-Stone, #18 Bead Head Breadcrust, #18 Barr Emerger, #18-20 Sparkle Wing RS II, #16 Elk Hair Caddis, #22 Trico, #18-20 Bead Head Flashback Bead Head Pheasant Tail, #20-26 Parachute Adams, and #18-22 Copper Johns.

Fraser River - August 27th, 2004
supplied by: Devil's Thumb Ranch
RECORDED:    54 °   FISHING: Good
It is cold up in the Fraser Valley today, and it is supposed to continue for the weekend. This is great news for those streams whose water temps were up a little high in recent weeks. The Fraser has been fishing well with trico's and caddis coming off. I would suggest fishing streamers down in the Fraser canyon. Conehead Strawberry Kiwi's work well, as well as olive zuddlers. Most of us have been taught to fish streamers across and downstream. However, I find on the Fraser youll get 10 times more hits if you fish them upstream, keeping in mind the same principle of casting towards shore and stripping into currents. Fish also hang in small pocket water in the Fraser, a little different then in the mighty Colorado. Call for more info at 970.726.8231. Thanks.

Uncompahgre River - July 15th, 2004
supplied by: RIGS Fly Shop
FISHING: Good
Uncompahgre River: 284 cfs
The river is clear and has dropped to a great fishing level!  Use lots of weight and fish deep on the seams.  There are occasional stone fly, yellow Sallies and caddis hatches, but the best bet is still to fish deep also try stimulators #12, #14 & #16 yellow and olive.  Midges, emergers, caddis puppas and terrestrials are your best bet for nymphing.

San Miguel River - July 12th, 2004
supplied by: RIGS Fly Shop
FISHING: Fair
San Miguel River: 385 cfs
Flows are starting to come down and clearing. It's time for dry flies & droppers! Try trudes #16, stimulators #14, and copper johns #18.

Boxwood Gulch Ranch - April 5th, 2004
supplied by: Colorado Fly Fishing Adventures, Inc.
FISHING: Good
Flow: 185 CFS

Spring has arrived at Boxwood Gulch and Longmeadow Ranch.  The river flows are steadily increasing and the result has been excellent fishing.  Fish are being caught all over each property with a few 21+ inchers being landed on each trip.  Numerous brook trout are being caught up to 15 inches.  Right now is a great time to book a day at Longmeadow Ranch or Boxwood Gulch.

Hot Flies : san juan worm, pink egg, black beauty 20, flashback pheasant tail 18, orange stimulators 14,

Farmers Union - April 5th, 2004
supplied by: Colorado Fly Fishing Adventures, Inc.
FISHING: Good
Flow: 195 CFS

Farmers Union has been fishing well with a double nymph rig being the triumphant set up on the river.  Fish are holding off the edges of riffles in the slower water.  Look for warmer water and air temps to increase the quality of fishing.

Hot Flies: red copper john 16-18, bead head pheasant tail 18, pink egg, brown san juan worm

Crystal Lake Resort - April 5th, 2004
supplied by: Colorado Fly Fishing Adventures, Inc.
FISHING: Good
Flow: 210 CFS

This is probably our hottest private ranch right now.  Nice trout are being caught with double nymph rigs.  Woolly bugger patterns are taking fish up and down the river.  Any pattern with some white in it seems to do best.  40+ fish days are very realistic right now. Rainbows and browns make up the majority of the fish in this section of river.

Hot Flies: white zonker, olive bead nymph 16, bead headed red copper john 16-18,blue winged olive emergers 18-20
