Gloucester - Cape Ann Area - June 15th, 2005
supplied by: Tuna Hunter Fishing Charters RECORDED:82 °FISHING: Great Gloucester Cod Action Improves, Stripers Feel Heat
Atlantic Ocean of Massachusetts - Gloucester, Cape Ann
Gloucester Harbor, Annisquam River, out to Stellwagon Bank Cod, Haddock, Striped Bass Norwegian Jigs, Clams, herring for bait Classic striper lures and flies - all colors Water conditions: calm, cloudy, pollen covered along shore Til Wed 6/15 - then rough, cloudy, stirred Water temp: 54 - 59 degrees, cooler underneath With the HOT muggy weather - it seemed as though everything was moving slow - at least ifshermen from shore experienced a hard search for moving waters and biting stripers. Eve nhigh tides seems to produce no major shore action along the southern coast of Cape Ann. Those patient and persisitent, and able to dirve around, found action on the Norht Shore of Cape Ann along Halibut Point in Rockport, MA, and furthur norht along the mouth of the Merrimack River and Plum Island shores. Fish hit on both flies and standard Rapala and similar lures. Those able to move offshore on a boat were rewarded with larger stripers - but again patience and persistence was important. Offshore the best bait proved to be live mackerel and/or herring, pollock if neither of the other two were obtainable. When heading offhsore for striper fishing, take the time to jig for live mackerel or herring - once outside of the harbor or river these tasty bits of fish-candy may not be available, and these bits make the idfference in attracting and hooking larger striper bass. With the forecast drastic weather change - we are anxious to see how this will effect the water temps, the water clarifty, the predicted winds and the fish! More on what happens next week, as TUNA HUNTER will face the new striper conditions on Wednesday. (early report as of 10 AM Wed AM is 20-25 knot winds, keeping fishing action in Gloucester HArbor - yielding a steady bite of just-under-28-inch stripers, for steady angling action - all on herring chunks - no keepers yet) The cod and haddock fishing actually picked up from the previous weekend (those who fished the first weekend in June recall that cod and haddock seemed to go on a hunger strike - except for those most persistent fishermen who dropped bait balls down to the stubborn schools, or moved around a LOT). The usual cod and haddock holes along Saturday Night Ledge off of Gloucester were producing fine catches of cod. Bait - clams - still rule over jigs. While at this spot one should watch the fish finder for large stripers passing by - better yet - keep a live mackerel out on a single or double hook live rig - the fight with a large striper is a welcome excitement. Offshore at Stellwagon and Tillies - cod and haddock catches vary spot to spot - with the previous day's catch being no prediction of today's results for a particular location. So watch the fish finder, and move around til one finds biting cod or haddock. Good fishing to all! Massachusetts - nearshore - December 18th, 2004
supplied by: Marine Trading Company RECORDED:47 °FISHING: Great
Stripers left the Cohasset area sometime in mid October for there winter playgrounds. The problem was finding good weather this fall to get out and get them. Many mornings we had 25kts winds and I sat sipping my coffee watching the fish work the bait off the beach.
On one October charter we hooked a small Blufin Tuna 50 yards off that same beach on a tube-n-worm rig.
We fished out of Old Lyme CT until mid November catching fish up to 48lbs but wind was also a problem there. We even made a run over to Montauk catching some great fish on Live Herring in December.
One of my fellow fishing Sharpies and I have a North Carolina trip planed in January.
