East Lake - September 30th, 2011
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place RECORDED:75 °FISHING: Great
The callibaetis hatch is going well right now, around midday. In the early morning it can be productive to fish leeches of chironomids. You might also see damsel flies, dragonflies, or caddis.
Davis Lake - September 19th, 2011
supplied by: The Patient Angler RECORDED:76 °FISHING: Good
Davis Lake
Thursday 9/15/11
Davis is fishing well. The full moon has put a damper on Bass but Trout fishing has been outstanding. Striping Damsels quickly on floating or intermediate lines seems to be the trick. Time of day did not matter; little or no wind appeared to be the key. Therefore, with little or no wind, steal and accurate casts are very important. Fish the Odell arm, “get out there and catch some fish.”
North Umpqua River - September 8th, 2011
supplied by: The Patient Angler RECORDED:80 °FISHING: Fair
Thu and I headed back down to the North Umpqua for four days during the Labor Day weekend. As you know the weather was fantastic with sunny warm days for fishing and cool nights for sleeping. The water was in great shape running around 1,000cfs in the upper river with a temperature of 50 degrees and just a little touch of color to the water. The big surprise was how few people were on the river. I don’t know if it was because it was the last weekend before schools starts, or because the fishing has been pretty slow all season, but we were happy to have a lot less pressure on the water and choice of open campgrounds. The fishing pressure did pick up on Monday with everybody having the day off, but there was still a lot of open water to fish.
The steelhead fishing was slow for us, or average for the time we have spent on the river this season. We fished all four days, although not hard days with some late a.m. starts and the occasional nap in the afternoon, and only hooked three steelhead. The funny thing was, that all three fish were hooked on day 3 and two of them in the same run. The best part was that the run that produced the two fish for us was a run we had never fished before. This was a piece of water that I have driven by for years that always catches my eye in small glimpses through the trees and always looks inviting, but with no apparent easy access. After some more challenging hiking along the river than we expected with some major boulder hopping and bush whacking, we finally arrived at one of the many picture perfect steelhead runs on the North Umpqua that looked even better up close than I could ever imagine from the limited peak-a-boo view from the road. It’s always a little more exciting to me to search mysterious new waters never knowing where the fish might be and having to probe every nook & cranny carefully covering water with the full expectation of hooking up with every swing. Searching new water paid off for us, saved the weekend and the mysteries of the pool were exposed a bit as the run produced two fish for us. It doesn’t happen very often, but one of the fish we hooked in that run was a bright, hot fighting hatchery fish.
The trout seemed a little more aggressive than normal as we hooked a couple of nice size trout each day on the swing. Not the prize steelhead we’re looking for, but enough to get your heart going for a second during the take when you first think it is!
We had a great time, as we always do on the North Umpqua. We enjoy the camping in such a scenic place on a beautiful river and catching fish is great, but truly just a bonus for us when we are on the Umpqua.
Just wanted to let you know if your license plate number is 395ERC, I saw you fishing down there and sporting The Patient Angler sticker on your car. You just earned 3 points on the bumper sticker program.
North Santiam River - September 6th, 2011
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place RECORDED:80 °FISHING: Good
The trout fishing can be pretty decent on the N. Santiam. Expect to see PMDs, PEDs, Caddis, and Yellow Sallys. Steelhead are also in the system at the moment.
Wallowa Lake - September 2nd, 2011
supplied by: Joseph Fly Shoppe, LLC RECORDED:62 °FISHING: Fair
Wallowa Lake has been fair to poor during much of August, due to the local ODFW hatchery having to kill some 40,000 rainbows due to disease and a stoppage of their normal stocking in August (not reported on their stocking schedule web site). Area ponds have been poor for the same reason. However, there is one notable exception to this stocking problem. Last week some 800 “trophy trout – 2+lb fish) were dumped into Wallowa Lake near the Marina. Power bait has produced some big time, big fish action this past week as these fish have hung near the Marina like pets
8-21-11: We seem to be in the August doldrums. The Wallowa River has continued to drop quickly as the hot weather has resulted in more water being used for irrigation. Water temps are still OK. Fishing has been slow most days, although the evening hatches have been thick and fishing fair to good after the shade is on the water. The best fishing is being had by fishers in cleated boots who wade the fast water to find the fish. Wallowa Lake is fishing poorly, their may have been a problem with the stocking program. I will contact ODFW on Monday to check. Imnaha River is fishing fair near town. Will update steelhead report shortly
8-8-11 Heavy trout stockings mean fair to good trout fishing near river mouth at the south end of the lake. One of your flies should have red in it.
7-27-11 Fly fishing at the south end near the river mouth has been very good in the evenings for stocked trout.
7-21-2011 Still fishing well, although we haven't had any great reports of late. Stay near the inlet, use a sinking line if possible for bigger fish, and don't fall into a trap with your fly. If you haven't hooked up in 15 casts switch it up (same flies as the last update).
7-15-2011 Another 6,000 trout were stocked recently and the lake continues to fish well. Concentrate your efforts in the area around the inlet. A variety of woolly buggers alone or in combination with a smaller dropper should be effective. Terrestial patterns fished subsurface or dry can also be effective as the rivers carries huge amounts of food from the forest into the lake.
7-9-2011 Fishing has been consistent at the lake. Woolly buggers and streamer patterns have beeen working well. There have also been some midge hatches coming off so you might try small 16-18 chironomid patterns, and small dry flies if you notice a small cloud of midges. Also use standard nymphs and droppers suggested for other area rivers. Local ponds like Marr, Wallowa Wildlife, Salt Creek have been fishing well and are frequently stocked.
Lostine River - September 1st, 2011
supplied by: Joseph Fly Shoppe, LLC RECORDED:75 °FISHING: Fair
9-1-11 Fishing is fair to poor near the campgrounds because ODFW does not protect native rainbows. Fishing in the meadows above Two Pan is good for small brookies - if you are stealthy.
8-8-11 ODFW does not protect native rainbows, and does not stock the river, so fishing is fair to poor near the campgrounds. River is still running high.
7-21-2011 Water is dropping fairly rapidly. Still about 200 cfs above ideal, but you might be able to find pocket water that is fishable now behind boulders and other structure. Smaller attractors should get a surface rise if put in the right place (Turks Power Ant is a deadly on this river), I also like wooly buggers and smaller nymphs, but try dries first.
7-14-2011 No change yet, keep your eyes on the gauge. We did have reports of fish being caught in the canyon in the quiet water behind large boulders. High lakes up the Lostine trails are still 60-80% covered in slush and ice, with deep snow still in the forest and on the trails up high.
7-9-2011 Very high still, I generally wait until the flow at the gauge (follow link on homepage to stream flows) is at about 300 cfs; so we have a ways to go yet. This is a truly glorious wilderness trout stream, so well worth the wait. Don't hesitate to hike up to some of the high lakes from the trailheads in the Lostine Canyon you will hit snow at 7,000 ft but fishing for brookies in the lakes should be good.
Kenny Lake - September 1st, 2011
supplied by: Joseph Fly Shoppe, LLC RECORDED:65 °FISHING: Fair
9-1-11 mided reports -same as last report
8-8-11 Mixed reports. They don't stock the lake this time of year, but some people are reporting fair evening fishing with flies with red on them.
7-27-11 Fair fishing for stocked trout on nymphs and dries.
7-21-2011 Same status as the last update. A great quiet place for any angler, and especially well suited to the novice as the casting is easy and the fish plentiful. Enjoy!
7-15-2011 Fishing well with both nymphs and dry flies. On the surface use sz 12-14 attractors, subsurface use bh nymphs, damsel nymphs, and buggers.
7-9-2011 This great little lake is still fishing. A great place to practice your long casting techniques. Nymphs and streamers always produce, and attractor dries are becoming more effective as the weather stays warm and sunny.
Deschutes River - Middle - July 20th, 2011
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place RECORDED:75 °FISHING: Fair
The middle Deschutes has been high recently. The fishing has lacked because of both the levels and the temperature. Fish tend to get lethargic in this kinda heat. Although nypmhing deep can be effective in these conditions.
Klamath Lake - July 7th, 2011
supplied by: Roe Outfitters Oregon Guide Klamath Falls Fly Shop FISHING: Poor
The lake is beginning to heat up and the fish are heading toward the rivers, fish the mouths of connecting streams (such as the Wood off of Agency Lake).
Wickiup Reservoir - June 11th, 2011
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place RECORDED:70 °FISHING: Great
Fishing has been pretty productive. fish with leech patterns, streamers and chironomids. Bass fishing at Wickiup should pick up in the next few weeks as the water temperatures begin to rise.
