Pocono Streams - March 22nd, 2008

Pocono’s and NJ area report 3/22/2008

Most of the trout streams in the Pocono’s are closed prior to the opening of trout season however you those that look you can find a couple streams open for fishing.

The early black stones have been coming off fairly regularly on the Mc Michaels Ck lately; I even witness one trout rising regularly the other day.  Longer slender nymphs in size 12-16 in all black have been taking both freshly stocked rainbows, hold overs and a few streambred brown.  In addition to early blacks, San Juans, glo bugs, steelhead caddis’s and rushes stones have been producing when the water is higher then normal and slightly off color.

The Pequest in NJ has been suffering for high water as of late, however that has not hindered the trout hitting.  Fishing condition have been tough but with some time on the stream you will learn the small back eddies and holds where fish measured in lbs not inches can be found.  In the heavier flows large attractor flies followed by smaller droppers can produce good numbers of fish.  On sunnier days midge hatches can trigger surface action and result in some early spring/ late winter dry fly action.

Opening day of the southern regions for PA will occur on March 29th.  That will give anglers more choices on areas to fish, both special regulation areas and general regulation areas.  Consult PA fish and boat for a complete list of approved waters subject to the southern opener. http://www.fish.state.pa.us

Shad are showing up at the Trenton Power Plant and the nets in Lambertville are schedule to begin the week of 3/24.  This should give us and early indication of what is to come this spring.  Shad numbers where at historical highs in 2007.  All things point to a strong run of shad this season.  For those who have never fished for shad, consider trying it because once you get into a couple “poor mans salmon” you will never look at trout the same way.

Broadhead CK - June 21st, 2007
supplied by: River Runs Custom Rods and Guide Service
RECORDED:    0 °   FISHING: Excellent maps
Right through the summer heat the Brodhead has been fishing exceptionally well.  Cooler nights have been keeping the day time water temperatures down and the fish have been responding.  The past two weeks has seen us out fishing with the centerpins over fly rods.  The Brodhead is stacked with fish right now however they are spread out of the entire length of the pools.  With out the presence of hatches locating these fish has been challenging and with the fly rods clients have needed to cover large distances to find them.  However ability to present flies, jigs and artificial using 75 to 100ft drifts have been a huge advantage over fishing the fly rods.  We have been fishing the same tippets (4-7x) and the same flies as droppers as we would if we where fly fishing.  The one notable exception is the use of 3inch pink rubber worms.  With the lower water levels and the early season pressure live bait, other then waxies and mealworms have been ignored in favor of the smaller offerings.
Fluorocarbon leaders and 2-4 gram clear floats have added to the stealthy approach, as well as size 16-18 pheasant tails, hares ears and small wets.  Most of the fish have been averaging 12-16 inch’s, however several fish in the 3-4 lb range have been taken in the last two weeks.  Trips have been averaging 15-25 fish per client per day, with a few days being much better including an exception day of landing 92 fish

Warming water in the Delaware River has been causing rainbows to migrate up into the creeks seeking cooler water.  This has added an addition element of excitement to this fishery as these fish are bright silver, strong and prone to jumping.  These fish are not wild fish, but where stocked several years ago as fingerings and tend to move back and forth between the Delaware and the Brodhead as water conditions change.

The Gorge has been fishing well as of late. On the few occasions we choose to hike in we encountered rainbows, and stream bred browns from 6-20inchs.  A recent color down in weather as well as recent rainfalls have brought the creek temperature below the normal summer temps and as a result fishing continues to be production.

Guided trips are still available as well as introductory lessons in centerpinning and float fishing.

Lehigh River - May 25th, 2007
supplied by: River Runs Custom Rods and Guide Service
RECORDED:    85 °   FISHING: Great
The Lehigh River is fishing well this time of year.  Flows are at a wadable level and temperatures are still well within comfortable limits for trout.  As of yet small mouth have not begun to out number the trout, but that will change shortly.  On a recent trip between Jim Thorpe and Parryville with two clients I observed not much insect activity with the exception of a few Slate Drakes and sporadic Tan Caddis.  On the 6 mile drift, we did find many trout scatter through out the holding water and flats between holes.  Float fishing with centerpins using 3inch pink worms, waxies, nightcrawlers and jigs.  The pink worms yield the bulk of the catch.  Both anglers caught many fish through out the day with each lading rainbows over 20 inches.
