Strawberry River - June 28th, 2005
supplied by: Western Rivers Flyfisher
FISHING: Good
Those water below Soldier Creek dam are fishable for a mile, then the river receives enough freshet from Willow Creek to color it up still. We looked at it this weekend again and it is still about a week away from fishing. There is a fair amount of color to the water and flows are running a little high. As in other waters, by weeks end the “Berry” should start to shape up. For some reason the stoneflies didn’t really materialize last year as they did in years past. Probably an accumulation of back to back low water years in combinations with hot temperatures. Hopefully last years cool and wet summer improve conditions for the stonefly hatches here and on other Utah waters. Our early ventures here showed good stonefly nymph numbers, an encouraging sign. As July’s Drake and stonefly hatches come to a close look for PMD hatches to produce very good fishing on those overcast and cloudy days. However, if you get a lot of rain, rock an mudslides can turn this little gem of a fishery into chocolate milk ending a day of long driving and high expectations. Always check your weather and satellite images before heading here. For that matter it is something we always do before heading out the door, to optimize our valuable and limited time a stream. Over the past several years once July comes to an end, so can the fishing. Either these fish move around a lot or they just go into hiding under summer suns intense glare. You will still find plenty of PMD’s late into July and by then a variety of caddisflies will also be out, predominantly the west’s prolific Western Weedy Water Sedge. August has us often times covering a lot of water to find very few fish. Those who spend a lot of time here do well on a consistent basis. Those making only an occasional appearance find that the scenery is far more productive that the fishing. Again, part of this is the accumulation of sub par water conditions that this and many other western waters have suffered over the past 5-6 years. Hopefully the current precipitation trend we are having is only the start of good things to come.

Logan River - March 9th, 2005
supplied by: Western Rivers Flyfisher
FISHING: Good
Warm weather will continue for this week. Perfect for the midge hatches that we are seeing across the state. This weather pattern will produce good to excellent fishing. However, once we start to see decent baetis hatches later in March, look for those cloudy overcast days vs. the warm high pressure that we are looking for now.

For those who know me, I still prefer those quiet stormy days to winters warm sunshine. Once the storms have settled into the area and the barometric pressure has stabilized I find that weather produces some of the very best of fishing. Not always the best of fishing conditions.

Our guides had good fishing during the past week using an assortment of dries and nymphs. Although the midge hatches vary from day to day regarding its duration, it has provided fair to good dry fly fishing opportunities on rivers such as Blacksmith Fork, the Logan and the Weber. The nymph fishing has been produced the most consistent fishing over the past month. If you want to just fish dries, be on the water from 10:00-3:00 on the average. I would prefer getting there early, since on some days the hatch has a tendency to end early.

Hatches on most of our Northern Utah waters have been coming off between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. As we look ahead, I don't see much changing in regards to this. Better to be there early to not miss it if you want to fish dries. Fishing small midge pupas, sow bugs, scuds and swinging soft hackles before and after the hatch.

We have some very nice weather moving into the area with afternoon temperatures in the 50s by the weekend. Should make for some excellent fishing and very pleasant conditions. There are some clouds around, which if stay warm will get a few more blue wings out and make the fishing a little easier.

Blacksmith Fork - November 29th, 2004
supplied by: Western Rivers Flyfisher
FISHING: Good
Blacksmith Forkis not that far away yet doesn’t seem to be on a lot of peoples radar screen. This little freestone stream is great this time of year. Overcast days will produce good BWO hatches and streamer fishing. Sound familiar. Flows are low since this is one of only a handful of free flowing rivers left in the state. As you gain elevation in the canyon you’ll find some good flat-water sections. You will have good Baetis hatches in these sections of the river. The pocket water portions of the Blacksmith are great for fishing nymphs. Try Mercers Micro Mayfly in Olive, Barrs BWO emerger, or a Pheasant Tail. This and other waters in the Cache Valley are upper elevation streams, so if you are planning to head here or just about anywhere to fish this week, be prepared fly and clothing wise. Check this link for the weather on the Blacksmith Fork or Logan River.
