Big Stoney Creek - December 25th, 2007
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
RECORDED:    43 °   FISHING: Good
Great Christmas wishes to everyone from the staff at Murray's Fly Shop. This week's temperatures will be mild in the mid Atlantic area which is good for those of us looking to try out our new gear! Big Stoney Creek near Edinburg has been fishing well over the last three days or so. I attribute this mostly to the warm afternoons which have been raising the stream temperatures several degrees each day. Nymphs and streamers are the mainstays but watch for BWO's and Midges around 4:00 pm as the sun gets off the water or anytime on overcast days.

Shenandoah River - South Fork - July 17th, 2007
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Great
The South Fork is fishing well from Elkton to Riverton, water is clear and levels are at their summertime low but average for mid July.  Avoid the heat of the day by fishing early in the morning or late in the evening while the fish are most active.  Blue Shenandoah Poppers have worked very well in the shade throughout the day and along grass beds or shallow ledges during the low light periods of the day.  Shenks White Streamer or a Dying Marauder both #6 are working well when fished along the edges of riffles and through the deep cuts between ledges.  Late in the evening try a Purple Passion #6 in the tail of the pool.  Many bass are chasing minnows at this time and the action can be fast if you don't spook the fish.

Blue Ridge Mountains Streams - July 17th, 2007
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
RECORDED:    64 °   FISHING: Great
Low and spooky is the name of the game in these native mountain streams.  The fishing has been great if you use a cautious approach and don't spook the fish.  Take along some 7x Frog Hair tippet material and a handful of flying beetles and Mr. Rapidan Ants both in #16 and Ants in #18.  Should you find a fish too smart for either of these patterns, go to a Murray's Inchworm.

Shenandoah National Park - January 19th, 2007
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
FISHING: Poor
The rivers are too cold for good bass fishing.

Passage Creek - January 19th, 2007
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
FISHING: Good
Back Creek and Passage Creek are both giving some good fishing for rainbows in the delayed harvest sections.  Watch for the trout in both of these streams coming to beatis and midges on the surface.  If you don't see surface action use a Casual Dress Nymph #12 or a Pearl Marauder #12 below the riffles and in the deep pools.  Big Stoney west of Edinburg, Mill Creek west of Mt. Jackson and the Bullpasture River upstream of Williamsville are good with the latter two flies.  The anglers who are willing to fish the sections of these streams that swing far away from the roads are getting the best fishing.

Jackson River - January 3rd, 2007
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
FISHING: Good
The Jackson and Bullpasture Rivers have recently been stocked and you can catch some nice rainbows on Pearl Marauders and Casual Dress both in size 12.

Shenandoah River - September 11th, 2004
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
FISHING: Good
The large streams are too high to fish but the upper reaches of our mountain streams will be fishable by Saturday September 11th.  To get the best fishing part at the trail heads on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive and hike down to the streams then fish you way back up the mountain.  Good flies are the Casual Dress Nymph and Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph both in size 12 in the deep pools.  If you like fishing on the surface you will do well with the Mr. Rapidan Dry sizes 14 & 16 and the Dark Humpy sizes 14 & 16.

These streams and access points are in my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams. Check our web site for special prices on discontinued products from Simms and Scott and used rods from Redington and Orvis.

Back Creek - February 3rd, 2004
supplied by: Murray's Fly Shop
FISHING: Poor
The trout fishing is still very slow so let's continue our study of the flies and tactics to use next summer.  Last week we saw the tactics which were effective with Shenk's Cricket and saw it was an outstanding "Fish Finder", pulling fish out from the deeply undercut banks.  When the streams are quite clear some of these trout may turn away, refusing the Cricket at the last second.  The fly has done a great part of it's job though, because you saw the trout as he turned away.  He has clearly shown you his feeding station.  Now it's up to you to fool the trout.  When this happens to me I use a trick the late Charlie Fox taught me.  I go to a much smaller fly with a greatly different shape.  My favorite "change of pace fly" for these tough trout is the Mr. Rapidan Ant in size 16, 18 and 20.  It floats like a cork, I can see it better than other ants and the trout take it quickly.
