Okanagan Lakes - June 12th, 2004
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    60 °   FISHING: Fair
Fishing at Lake Chopaka was spotty during the week of June 7th.

Chironomid fishing was ok, with the best fishing from 11am to 2pm.  I would fish a spot, get a few fish and would then need to move to continue to get hookups.  I would fish a size 12 and 14 pupa pattern in olive, green and rootbeer brown.  We did have decent chironomid fishing one evening for no immediately obvious reason. Callibaetis activity was virtually non-existent and generally lasted only 30 to 45 minutes each day, however, when the hatch did occur the fish were actively taking adults.  Try using a Brook's Sprout Callibaetis in size 14 and 16 or a callibaetis emerger in the same sizes.

Damsels were around every day in good numbers, but I had trouble getting fish to eat both adult and nymph imitations.  The fish were very selective and the adults they were eating were those that were hovering above the surface of the water.  Hard to imitate that!

Caddis came off in the late afternoon and evenings and I had my best fishing with dry flies from 5pm to 7pm.  The caddis were black in color and the X-caddis pattern I fished was the most successful for me.

My best day on the lake was 18 fish.  The weather was not good and it was quite windy on most days.   There was significant pressure, the campground was full on Tuesday the 8th and people continued to arrive throughout the week.  Smallmouth Bass were caught everyday with the biggest running about 3 pounds.

Overall, I felt like it was not a great trip, but I'm sure glad I went because it is to me one of the most beautiful places you can fish!

I wouldn't go to Chopaka right now without:

Brook's Sprout Callibaetis 14, 16
Adult Damsels 10
Ice Cream Cones Olive and Brown 12, 14, 16
X-Caddis or Tri Wing Caddis in Olive 10, 12
Stalcup's Damsel Nymph 8, 10
Callibaetis Soft Hackle 14
