Lake Almanor - July 1st, 2005
supplied by: Al Brown's Guide Service
FISHING: Good
The hex hatch has begun on the north shore and is spreading to the west side now making for improved fishing conditions as the fish rise to the occasion.  Brown jigs or Woolly Buggers fished right off the bottom are finding fish from 2 ½ to 6 pounds.  For trollers use a smaller lure like a Needlefish in various colors in the early mornings or evenings. Speedy Shiners are work as well.

Bucks Lake - July 1st, 2005
supplied by: Al Brown's Guide Service
FISHING: Great
Find great Mackinaw fish in the middle of the lake on Stingfish as fish to 22 pounds were taken this week.  Next best are the kokanee limits you will find in 25 to 35 feet with a Sep’s watermelon dodger and pink tiger spinner tipped with corn. Fishing for brown trout should pick up in a week or so.

Frenchmans Lake - July 1st, 2005
supplied by: Al Brown's Guide Service
FISHING: Good
Good rainbow action here, with trollers picking up fish pulling Needlefish, Super Dupers and Rapalas, as well as nightcrawlers--with and without flashers. Bank fishers have relied pretty much exclusively on Power Bait and ‘crawlers.  Cat fish limits are more and more plentiful.

Lake Oroville - July 1st, 2005
supplied by: Al Brown's Guide Service
FISHING: Good
Bass action is still good here with most of the fish within the slot and being found using dartheads or drop-shotting down 25 to 30 feet, but cranks and even top water is working very early before the light’s on the water or later in the evening. Catfish also working, and king salmon, along with some trout, are being taken by trolling down by the dam at a variety of depths, mostly 40 feet or more

Lake Davis - July 1st, 2005
supplied by: Al Brown's Guide Service
FISHING: Good
Good rainbow action when weather stays half-way decent. Good numbers of quality fish between 3 and 4 pounds, and some over 5 pounds, have been caught. Fly fishing has been good for anglers using damsels, with damsel hatches on the surface as late as 2 p.m. Trolling Dick Nites, fire-tiger Needlefish and Rainbow Runners has been working. Dunking Power Bait and nightcrawlers from the bank or anchored boats also effective.

Shore- The best are has been Mallard Cove north to Fairview and Long Point.  Baits of choice are powerbait and or inflated night crawlers presented on a sliding sinker.

Fly Fishing- The best areas include the south east shoreline and the north tip of Mallard Cove.  Traditional cast and strip either with a floating line and a weighted nymph or a intermediate sink tip line and a un-weighted nymph seems to be working.  Bead head nymphs under an indicator on a floating line seems to be working as well.  Successful patterns are olive glimmer, J. Fair wiggly tail numphs, P.T.F.B.B.H., and Red Copper Johns.

Trolling- Fish are at a depth of 7 feet and a variety of lures are being used including; Needlefish, Rapalas, Red rainbow runners, Dick nites with a red head and Jay Fair Olive Leech trolling flys.

Hat Creek - July 1st, 2005
supplied by: Al Brown's Guide Service
FISHING: Good
Hat Creek Wild Trout Area-Good water conditions prevail. Excellent pale morning dun (PMD) hatch in mid morning and evening with fish working the hatch. You’ll also find lots of caddis most evenings.

Upper Hat Creek-Always a good bet with nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Try Rooster Tails, Kastmasters and Panther Martin lures for trout in this area.

Orville Lake - December 22nd, 2003
supplied by: Evaday Guide Service
RECORDED:    54 °   FISHING: Great

Coho are on the spawn, fish at creek inlets in about 15ft of water. Use Minnows and cut anchovie for some nice fish running around 4 lbs.

Bass fishing has picked up a little.
Try drop shotting worms in 40-60 ft of water over sumerged trees.

Upper Merced - November 18th, 2003
supplied by: Leland Flyfishing Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Central Sierra guide Tim Hutchins says the season is closed in Yosemite Park, but the Merced is open from the park line downstream.  Tim says there are decent bluewing olive hatches which have the fish feeding on top from 11:30 to 3:00 most days.  Otherwise he says the water temperature is down and the river is slow except during the hatch period.  Use long leaders with 6x tippets and small emergers, cripples during the first part of the hatch, switch to duns for the rest of the hatch.  He reports the warm rain increases both the hatch intensity and the activity level of the fish.  It’s technical but fun fishing.

Wet Flies:
#16-20 BH Prince, Birdsnest, BH Flashback PT, #16-20 Micromay and black midge pupa (zebra)

Dry Flies:
#12-22 Parachute Adams, BWO Hatchmatchers, CDC Baetis Dun, and Almost Duns
