Deschutes River - Middle - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Good
The middle D is a decent option, now that the weather is cooling. There have been some good reports of anglers nymph fishing riffles with success. Look for oxygenated water and deeper pools to hold most of the fish. The browns should get hungry before the fall spawn.
Wickiup Reservoir - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Excellent
There has been some large trout being caught in the Deschutes channel of Wickiup, but the season will end on Sept. 1. You have a couple days left to chase these fish. Nymph tactics or heavy streamers sunk in the deepest pockets is the best option. It is critical to get your offering in front of these fish, which generally will hold tight to the structureless bottom.
Davis Lake - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Great
The Bass fishing is still the best this lake has to offer. There have been a few good trout caught, but numbers are still low compared to the bass numbers. Surface poppers will still produce good action early and late. Big ugly bunny type flies fished slowly under the surface will also produce, especially during the day time hours.
Deschutes River - Upper - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Fair
The Upper D is a good bet for dry fly action. Most of the fish are small, but willing. The largest fish will be hidden under cuts, logs and any overhead cover. Fast sinking streamers or nymphs can get looks from these bruisers. Hold tight and pull hard if you'd like to land one, as they always head right back to the cover they came from.
Fall River - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Good
The fishing has been good here and plenty of fish are available around the hatchery. There have been decent hatches during mid to late afternoon. Small and spare mayfly and midge patterns in the 18-20 zone have been producing. Be cautious not to approach these fish too closely and present your offering carefully.
Crooked River - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Great
The Crooked has still been a very consistent fishery. It's mostly a midge show, with surface activity being sparse. Try a zebra midge or like patterns under an indicator. Keep the leaders short as you don't want your flies dragging on the bottom. If the skies are overcast or cooler shady days appear, the surface activity will be better.
Crane Prairie Reservoir - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Good
Crane has been the best "big" fish water by far this season. Many trophy fish have been caught and the fishing has remained good. The cooler weather should have activity up a bit, but this is not a numbers game and a few good fish in the day is a success. Chronimids fished close to the channel bottoms is still the best option. You may want to use flourocarbon and even go down in size a bit, as the water is clear and the fish have seen a lot of offerings throughout the summer.
Hosmer Lake - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Fair
Hosmer has been a popular option lately, but get there early or late to stay away for the crowds of canoe's and kayak's. The traveling sedge hatch should be kicking and soon the brookies will stage for their fall spawn. Damsels and some calibeatis should be in the arsenal, as these bugs may appear on the warmer days still.
East Lake - August 27th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters FISHING: Good
East has been a good producer and one of the few lakes where dry fly fishing takes a good number of fish right now. Calibeatis are still present, so wind drifting nymphs early and watching for emergances early afternoon is the best bet. You may also want to have a few streamers to throw early or late, as the big browns should start appearing along the shorelines as fall approaches.
North Santiam River - August 26th, 2010
supplied by: The Patient Angler RECORDED:69 °FISHING: Fair
With the shop so busy, I haven’t had the time to get out and fish. But a couple of days ago, I had a cooler and my gear in the truck ready to go, and bailed out of work, picked up Thu, and ran over to the North Santiam for an evening and morning fish. We arrived around 7:00 pm and found our first choice and one of our favorite runs, to be quiet, shaded and without another angler in sight.
The water was in great shape running about 1300cfs and with a cool temperature of around 60 degrees. Thu and I stepped into the water and started working through the run with the couple of hours of daylight we had left. About an hour into the run, I was swinging a Purple Hobo Spey through a boulder patch that is normally good holding water, so my expectations and anticipation were running high, when suddenly I had a solid hookup with what turned out to be a fly stealing rock. So I broke it off and tied on a new Purple Hobo Spey and sent another cast out over this fishy water. I took a quick step down river as to avoid another hang-up with the same rock, and wouldn’t you know it, right when I hit the same spot in the swing my line came tight again. Assuming that I had hooked-up with the same fly stealing rock, a stream of bad words flew from my mouth as I lifted the rod to free my fly from the rock. My recital of the “seven words you can’t say on T.V.” was cut short by the realization that the rock was pulling back with big head shakes, and then took off down stream at a rapid pace with my line zipping through my guides. And then it was over, the hook came loose and the fish was gone. I’m not sure if lift the rod to free the fly, hook-set was the cause of my demise, but it was fun while it lasted. And I did feel a little guilty about jumping the gun with the bad words.
As it turned out, Thu and I fished out the evening and hit a half dozen runs the next morning without another pull, but it was really nice to fish great water with very little pressure.
