Hoh River - January 6th, 2009
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:44 °FISHING: Poor
Hoh is out of shape right now running at 2710 cfs and 1.5 ft of vis.
With the expected rainfall tonight and tomorrow the river will be going into flood stage. It willtake sevral days and cold weather to bring this one back to fishable. When it does come back in be very carefull on your first float as ther will be lots of river channel changes.
Should have lots of native fish to catch when it comes back into shape.

Calawah in okay shape running at 2150 cfs and clear with 3.5 ft of vis. Plenty of hatchery steelhead stretched out from just above hatchery down to confluence with the Bogachiel. Should see a few Natives fish starting to show up with this higher water.
The best technique has been floats. Floats and jigs have doing very well with colors like pink, pink/white, pink/purple , black/red and pink/peach. Both the Aero Jig marabou series and the beau mac beaded series have been working very well.
Floats and bait have been producing well with floats and Shrimp or prawns being the best.

Best techniques have been pulling plugs or divers and sand shrimp or Coon stripe shrimp. best plugs have been x-4 flatfish in silver, TJ special, Flame red, Dr. Death, green weenie or flounder. Both shrimp and prawns have also had good success when stretched out behind a diver with a small pink corkie in front of it.
The other good technique has been floats. Floats and jigs have doing very well with colors like pink, pink/white, pink/purple , black/red and pink/peach. Both the Aero Jig marabou series and the beau mac beaded series have been working very well.

Should stay good for a couple of more weeks with one last push of fish coming off this next high water.
Sol Duc River - January 6th, 2009
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:44 °FISHING: Excellent
Sol Duc in great shape running at 9 boards and 3.5 ft of vis.
Hatchery and wild fish spread out from Riverside all the way to lynndeckers. Best fishing has been from the Salmon Hatchery down to Lynndeckers.
With this higher water the best technique will be side drifting Eggs or Prawns. Stick with a little bigger cheater and #2 Vision hooks when fishing in the more colored water. Remember to cover lots of water as most of the early fish are on the move.
Look for left ventral fins clipped on Wild Steelhead as these are Snider Brood Stock Hatchery Fish.
Hatchery numbers will get better in early January, Snider Brood Stock fish will get better in mid January and wild fish numbers will just get better each day.
If you would like to help collect Snider Brood Stock Adults please contact me for instructions at 360-271-7197.
Remember that above the Salmon Hatchery it is selective regulations which means no bait, single barbless hooks, no scent and no retention on wild fish.
Columbia Basin Lakes - January 6th, 2009
supplied by: Swede's Fly Shop RECORDED:29 °FISHING: Poor
Because of the snow conditions there are no fishing reports to be posted at this time. Please keep checking our web site for current update reports as they come in.
Rufus Woods on the Columbia River is about the only fishing that improves this time of year. The problem is getting through 6 foot snow banks to get to the launch sites. Use small olive or brown minnow or brown or black egg sucking leech patterns on RIO Deep 7 sinking fly lines.
Skykomish River - January 2nd, 2009
supplied by: All About the Fly RECORDED:35 °FISHING: Good
The Skykomish is in great shape!! 2,400cfs 3+feet vis and 38-39 degree water temps. Winter natives are starting to show up. Low and slow with type 4and 6 tips is the name of the game right now. Theres still some hatchery fish being caught arond Reiter and on the Wallace river. So get out there and catch some Steelhead.
Cowlitz River - January 1st, 2009
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:38 °FISHING: Great
Cowlitz is in good shape running at 8100 cfs and 3 ft of vis.
The run seems to be late but on the positive side there are more fishing showing up each day. Hatchery steelhead stretched out from Blue creek boat ramp down to Mission Bar. Best fishing has been around blue creek and the wall.
Best technique has been sidedrifting #10 Cheaters and two #2 vision hooks. Best colors have been Flame, Char Clown and Ranibow. Best baits have been Red bait cured in Pautzke cure or Atlantic Prawns cured in red or pink pautzke cure.
Pulling Plugs have also been producing well in the afternoon when most of the sidedrifters have quite. Best plugs have been T-4 Flatfish in Silver, Silver Metallic Clown, Flame Red, Cop Car and Flounder.
Another good producer has been backtrolling Coon Stripe shrimp behind a diver. This works great on summer runs but is proving itself to work just as well for winter runs. During the winter I have been putting a small spin-n-glo in front of them.
This one is only going to get better as the days unfold. The peak should be around Christmas.
Puget Sound - November 2nd, 2008
supplied by: The Avid Angler RECORDED:47 °FISHING: Great
Various Locations in the South Sound 55 degrees, rain, wind 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Tide: Incoming to 11’3” at 8:19 AM; Outgoing to 7’9” at 2:03 PM; Incoming to 8’11” at 6:07 PM Fishing: Excellent
Three anglers jumped the ferry to Southworth, profiting from the extra hour on the clock to hit the beach at first light. As we worked north towards the point, we found several resident silvers in the 14” range on a variety of baitfish patterns: a pink clouser size 6, an olive Glass Minnow in a 6 and an Olive Foul Free Herring, also in a 6. Casting on this beach is difficult during high tide; however, we managed to several fish (including one small cutty) to hand between the three of us quartering up the beach. On the south side below the ferry dock, the wind was hellacious. The only way to get a cast out was to punch in just above the surface of the water, and even then, casts were short and sloppy. Despite these conditions, I hooked and landed the largest cutthroat I’ve caught thus far on an olive articulated clouser (photo to come). This was one hot fish! Multiple jumps, two long runs, and a beautiful buttery fall color.
Eager to find another location away from the wind, we moved south and found several more cutthroat on the slow outgoing tide (one on a yellow reverse spider – these flies are really quite effective) and quite a few more resident silvers towards the tail end of the day. Joel’s key: Southworth, Ollala, Narrows Park (ridiculous!!!)
Yakima River - October 30th, 2008
supplied by: Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC RECORDED:58 °FISHING: Great
This Yakima river report is brought to you by the staff of Puget Sound Fly Company, with help from our customers. Please feel free to call us at (253) 839-4119 for further details or for help with pattern recommendations.
It looks like this cloudier weather should improve the fishing over the next week. Sporadic BWO and Mahogany hatches will continue and seem likely to increase. Nymphing has been extremely effective in the Canyon with some decent dry fly fishing during the afternoons. If you like to cover a lot of water, throwing streamers (Sculpzilla) can produce some very large fish, particularly at this time of the year.

FISHING:
These last few weeks have produced some of the finest Cutthroat fishing in years. Piggyback the beginning of Chum season on top of that and you have some truly excellent fishing. As if that wasn’t good enough most of these spots are within and hours drive of your house.
Cutthroat technique has been fairly straightforward: Moving water, clear lines and erratic retrieves. I can’t tell you exactly where to go but think Key Peninsula and Hood Canal. If you aren’t catching Cutthroat where you are, move!
Chum are showing up at Chico, John's, Hoodsport and many other locations. Hoodsport holds fish consistently for weeks at a time. These other runs are much smaller and fish come in waves. The theme here, like with the Cutthroat: Stay mobile. Chum tend to like a rising tide, lower light and rain. I’ve had some epic fishing right at dark with a flood tide and pouring rain. Don’t let bad weather stop you from fishing!
LINES: Standard intermediate (Clear) lines are good, but the next generation of integrated shooting lines like the Rio ‘Outbound’ are ideal. We played a small part in the design of this line and our input was totally focused on the local beach fishing. TIDES
