Methow River - September 2nd, 2010
supplied by: Griff's Fly Fishing Adventures RECORDED:69 °FISHING: Fair
Sorry I haven't updated for awhile. I have been laid up most of the last part of August and haven't been able to fish. So, I have been tying steelhead bugs, getting my two-handed reels set up with Scandi and Skagit lines, and a few miscellaneous tasks, but I am back on the river as of the 1st of the week. The days have gotten shorter and cooler. Grouse hunting and archery deer hunting started yesterday, and you may want to think about your waders again if you're fishing.
My friend Susan fished this weekend and reported catching her second biggest Methow cutthroat. She caught it on the same exact fly she used to catch her big one in March (see the "Methow River" page for a picture of her big one). She walked in to a hole between Winthrop & Twisp where not once but twice lost either this fish or one just like it last year. She tried several patterns including the ones she hooked it on last year but no way. In a final attempt to lure it out, she tied on the "retired" nymph she used to catch the big one. On the first pass through the hole, the bobber went down and it was "big cutty" on. This time she landed it. It was about 22". Sorry, she was on her own and unable to snap a picture without harming the fish. The nymph is one of her own creation, and she made me sign a non-disclosure statement not to reveal it. This same bug was very effective last spring for steelhead. With the returning numbers looking as good as they are right now, looks like she’ll have a chance to try it out on them this fall. All I can say is keep checking WDFW's site for updates on the opening of steelhead fishing on the Wenatchee, Methow, Entiat, and Okanogan.
See ya on the river, Rod
Cowlitz River - August 25th, 2010
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:94 °FISHING: Excellent
Cowlitz is in great shape running at 4780cfs with 5 ft of vis.
Mouth of Cowlitz has been on fire and getting better each day.
With the rise in the water level it has really spurred the fish into biting better and has also moved more fish into the lower end of the river.
Few summer steelhead around Blue Creek and Barrier Dam. Best technique has been pulling pink or purple coon stripe shrimp behind a hot-n-tot. Fish the little faster deeper holes for your best fishing.
Side drifting is also still fishing very good. Stick with a #2 vision hook with a small chunk of yarn and small cluster of eggs or small piece of Shrimp.
Lots of Chinook showing up every day down at the mouth. Anchor fishing has been good when anchoring in 10' to 25' of water with a Flame red u-20 flatfish or a coon stripe shrimp and spin-n-glo. When the tide comes in swith to trolling spinners in a 50/50 or flame red #5colorado blade.
There have been loys of early chinook showing up already and with the forecast of a huge return of chinook i will not be surprised if we start seeing them show early.
Columbia River - August 25th, 2010
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:94 °FISHING: Excellent
Columbia river in great shape running at 117,900 cfs with 10ft of vis.
Kings are are pouring in at Bouy-10 along with afair amount of Silvers. Kings are spread out all the way to the dam wiht Hot Spots around Kalama and Cowlitz.
Summer Steelhead are the hot topic right now with 190,000 plus over Bonniville dam. Kings are starting to move pretty good with the numbers going up each day.
This is just starting to heat up with the peak in the next couple of weeks.
Best fishing is to sit on anchor in 12-18 ft of water with a 1 ft dropper and a 6ft leader with a coon stripe shrimp and a small #6 spin-n-glo back behind the boat with 1-5 oz lead ball. You can also fish a x-4 flatfish in flame red or silver/red with the same dropper and leader length.
Summer steelhead will be great for severla more weeks or until the fall chinook take over in a couple of weeks. Get ready for the kings because they are coming and it is going to be huge.
As this water gets warmer the kings will be running deep so look for fish in the 30 to 55' foot depth. The best technique for the Kings will to be sitting on Anchor with a 5' dropper and a 6' leader with a Simon wobbler in silver, silver/chart, met chart, met pink and my favorite copper. This get start heating up big time in the next week so be here.
Hoh River - August 21st, 2010
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:86 °FISHING: Excellent
Hoh is in great shape running at 860cfs with 5 ft of vis.
Lots of summer steelhead spread out from mouth all the way to the park boundry
Fishing above the 101 bridge has been best pulling plugs in X-4 flatfish with silver, silver/red, green hornet, met pink and MJ. Fishing floats and jigs has also been producing. Sitck with brighter colors with the colored water like Pink, Pink/white, pink/chart and nightmare.
Fishing below the 101 bridge is same as above tackle but you can add sidedrifting bait using 2 #4 vision hooks and a small cheater in flame red, Chart/red dots, chart green dots, rainbow and glo orange. Stick with small baits in orange or red eggs clusters or small chunks of shrimp.
Few summer chinook around in the deeper holes mostly in lower river. Fish M-2 flatfish in silver/chart, silver/red, Met chart, met pink and seahawk. You can also fish eggs behind a #20 diver with a small corkie or spin-n-glo in fornt of them. Try a smal piece of Sardine, tuna or shrimp with your eggs. Floats and eggs in the same deeper slower holes will aslo work well.
Summer steelhead will be around for a least another month or so and summer chinook will be good for a couple more weeks before the fall fish start to show in middle of september.

Down at the mouth the best been sittting on anchor with a coon stripe shrimp and a small spin-n-glo back behind the boat in 10-15ft of water. You can also fish a x-4 flame red flatfish on a 5ft leader with a 1 ft dropper.

Puget Sound - August 8th, 2010

Tuna Fishing out of Hammond, OR (No Standard Body of Water for Pacific Ocean)
Weather: Overcast in the morning, sunny in the afternoon with moderate seas and bar
Fishing: 18 fish hooked, 13 to boat
Flies: shock and awes are all you’ll need (and I wouldn’t want anything else)
Imagine a 200lb Chinook that never gets tired…If you can’t go tuna fishing. There is nothing like landing a tuna on a fly rod. First of all, you’ll need a stout 12 weight to land a 20lb fish. We’ve all heard stories of 100 yard steelhead runs. While I’ve never actually seen one of those I can tell you that the first burst of a hooked tuna will easily take 100 yards off your backing…and expect 2 or 3 of these in an honest 20 minute wrestle with this impressive fish. If you can land a tuna you can land anything. You NEED to get down to Hammond and go fishing with Chuck. He’s a cheerful, salty captain who listens to what you want and gets you on top of fish.
Some things to keep in mind for your trip: Bimini leaders, these fish fight hard to the end and you want a leader that can handle the constant shock and tension that come with tuna. Polarized glasses are a must, the glare from the water will burn your eyes by the end of the day and having some polarized protection also lets you see these beautiful fish in the water (believe it or not you will probably have an opportunity to do some sight casting!!). BONINE, if you might get sea sick… you will; take a BONINE the night before and 1 ½ when you get up and you will feel great without the drowsiness of Dramamine. The bait switch, ask Chuck to point out the bait switch to you before you shove off so that you make sure you DON’T turn it off. When a fish is hooked, he throws some live bait into the water to keep the fish around/bring them up (hello sight casting). You really need to book a trip. If you don’t believe me, next time you’re in the shop ask if anybody’s ever been tuna fishing and see the reaction you get…you’ll never be the same once you’ve landed a tuna.
Sol Duc River - August 7th, 2010
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service RECORDED:62 °FISHING: Excellent
The Sol Duc is in great shape at less than a board with 20+ ft of vis.
Some Summer Chinook are making a showing. Fish are stacking up in the deeper holes and small groups of tidal fish showing as well. Summer steelhead are sneaking their way in as well and stacking up around the hatchery. Sockeye are still making a very strong showing! Sockeye have been very fun this month with limits boated daily. You should give this a try if you are up for a great OP summer fishery! Some of the deeper holes have been fishing good with a diver and Bait. Most holes are getting to slow for divers. Fish a #20 diver with a 5ft leader and any combination of Eggs, Shrimp, Sardines and Mackeral. Sit on the holes and wait for them to bite. You might also try to use some floats and eggs in the deeper holes.
Yakima River - August 1st, 2010
supplied by: Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC RECORDED:72 °FISHING: Poor
Section: South to East Cle Elum
7:00am to Noon
2 fish to hand, both under 12"
Flows are raging at this point and best to fish out of the high hot sun.... Dawn to 11am or 4pm-Dusk. Tough going today. We didn't see any bug activity today and aside from from the two fish that rose to our stimulator and hoppers. Really a tough going both from a fishing perspective and behind the oars. Keep an eye on the takeout at east Cle Elum, the channel that dumps in at the takeout ramp is REALLY flowing right now and making pulling out there tough and kinda sketchy.
Dave's Hopper (sz. 12), Tan/Yellow Stimulator (Size. 10), Tan Sculpzilla (sz.8), Flashback Stone (sz. 12), Copper John (Size 10).
Neah Bay - July 26th, 2010
supplied by: Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC RECORDED:72 °FISHING: Good
3 boats, 8 men and no salmon.
We fished Neah Bay Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Despite the clear, sunny weather across the entire state Washington, Neah Bay was a bit chilly and completely fogged in until Sunday AM. This, coupled with HUGE tide exchanges, made for some lumpy water and tough conditions. Rock fish and Ling Cod fishing was good, not great and there were no salmon to be found on the inside of Tatoosh. Those boats we saw that were able to make it out to Swift Shore Bank seemed to be able to limit out, but the fish were deep.
Cedar River - July 25th, 2010
supplied by: Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC RECORDED:74 °FISHING: Great
4 fish landed today between 8” and 21”. Down low the river is still fishing well very early in the morning. We nymphed all morning and raised/hooked lots of fish with 4 to hand. Make sure to have a strong and long 6 weight to get your double nymph rigs out there without tangling as well as fighting the big fish. Try to be on the river by 5:00AM and expect to be all by yourself. Fish the darker water with a large fly like a speculator on top with a small, colored dropper underneath. **IMPORTANT** Bring only what you need to fish and leave nothing in your car unless you’re parking at the library. Two of our cars were broken into; not much was taken but meth heads will do anything for something that looks even of minimal value and pawnable. You might even want to have something in your car that says “nothing of value in here”. Beside the car issues, the fishing was great.
