FISHING: Excellent
The torrid striped bass action in Beach Haven continued right through Thanksgiving weekend before it started to slow a bit. The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association were in the middle of the action and were joined by boats from as far north as Long Island and Ocean City to the south.Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” said that limit is the word that comes to mind for the last several striper trips. His Thanksgiving trip limited out but 9:30am with 8 keepers, and they released fish for another two hours before calling it a day. His black Friday's trip was another trip that had its limit of 10 keepers and we 15 more released.Because of the large number of boats that moved in to enjoy the fishing, Captain Fran spent time away from the fleet looking for smaller pods of fish and doing some trolling. He plans to keep fishing the stripers until the bite stops. The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” and Captain Frank Camarda had planned a half day trip for striped bass but headed back early since the boat limited out early. The pool winner tipped the scales at 23-pounds.The “Miss Beach Haven” will be splitting its trips between jigging for stripers and heading out to some productive wrecks for some strong blackfish action. FISHING: Excellent
The striped bass bite has been nothing short of phenomenal in the Long Beach Island area for the past two weeks, and the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been getting their fill of it.Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” found stripers in water as shallow as 18-feet on out to 45-feet. He termed the fishing “superb” with the average size of the fish caught around 30-inches. Captain Carl kept moving with the schools for continuous action. He also found that although the fishing further from shore was still good, there were more bluefish mixed in with the bass. He says he is hoping the fishing and weather holds up for a few more weeks.Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” fished last Friday for outstanding action trolling for big fish. He dragged Stretch 25’s and landed 8 keeper bass to 40-inches, 5 short bass, and 5 slammer bluefish. He trolled a black and silver on one line and a red and white on the other.Because of all of the boats in the area on Saturday, he switched to jigging with short drifts. He had his 4-man limit of 8 fish by 9:20 and played catch and release for the next 2 hours. Captain Fran is advising his customers to bring their own bonus striper tags with them if they want to bring home an additional fish over the 2 per person limit. The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda has been finding good numbers of blackfish now that the daily limit is back up to 6 fish. Even when it is raining and the winds are up, there have been dedicated anglers sailing and doing well on the wreck fish. Both days of last weekend were similar with quite a few anglers limiting out on blackfish, and many catching some nice black sea bass. Pool winners have been blackfish in and 5-6 pound class. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

FISHING: Excellent
The striped bass action for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association has been fantastic for the past week. The only problem has been some poor weather including thick fog, strong winds, and strong seas.Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” reports the fishing last week was “off the charts.” He termed last Wednesday’s fishing as “epic.” His open boat group of four anglers limited out in just an hour with eight fish and played catch and release for the rest of the day. Every cast resulted in a fish and most of them were 18-25 pounds. Poor weather over the weekend made ocean fishing difficult, and Captain Fran spent his time fishing in the inlet. The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda had planned to sail last weekend for some offshore wreck fishing, but had a change of heart due to strong winds and seas.Instead of heading offshore, they fished close to the beach for a nice pick of striped bass and some big bluefish. The swells made jigging difficult, but they caught enough fish to make everyone happy and Chumley won the pool with a 21-pounder. Captain Frank has an assortment of trips scheduled including stripers, sea bass, and blackfish. Captain George Finck of “Sparetime Charters” took Ray McVry and five of his friends trolling for Striped Bass recently. They had a great trip, limiting out on striped bass with the smallest fish measuring 33-inches. They also picked up a couple of nice bluefish.Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” has been putting together some nice catches of stripers on everyone of his trips. Last Sunday he had Randy Godshall and his fiancée Indy Park of Souderton, Pa., out to try and catch their first striped bass. They went out through the north cut at Holgate and got into fish before they reached Beach Haven. In 40-feet of water the real action started. The best rigs were the stretch lures and umbrella rigs. FISHING: Excellent
The fishing for striped bass and black sea bass exploded this past weekend as the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association found some excellent action. Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” had Chris Maest and his 9 year old son Eric of Princeton out Sunday for some striped bass. Because of the recent poor weather, Captain Carl was doubtful about how the offshore action would be. The seas were not that bad, however, and they tried trolling. First young Eric picked up a big bluefish in about 35-feet of water. After more time trolling, a big fish hit. Young Eric grabbed the rod and fought the fish for 25 minutes until a 40-inch bass was boated. These were Eric’s first big fish every, and he surely is a hooked angler now.Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” reports that his November fishing production has seen a dramatic improvement from that of October. Although the main run is still to the north of Beach Haven, Captain Fran has been seeing some very nice bass on his boat with all in the 20-pouond class. His sources tell him that the main body of fish should b e arriving any day now. Meanwhile Captain Frank Camarda on the “Miss Beach Haven” took a crew of anglers out for a day of bottom fishing. This was his first trip since the black sea bass season reopened on November 1. Mate Sal Rosa reports that most anglers limited out while those who did not ended up with an average of 20-fish. Besides the sea bass a striped bass, some bluefish, and some blackfish were brought across the rails. Chumley won the pool with a 3.5pound sea bass. The “Miss Beach Haven” has a 10-hour offshore sea bass trip scheduled.Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 877-524-2423.

FISHING: Great
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have a lot to look forward to. First, the season for black sea bass re-opens on November 1. Recent wreck trips have shown that there are very good numbers of big sea bass around. Next, although the bite has started off slowly, as the water temperatures continue to drop, the striped bass should be arriving very shortly. The November bite for stripers in the Beach Haven area is traditionally a very hot one. Thirdly, the daily bag limit for blackfish will be increasing to 4 per person starting on November 15. That fact will make ocean bottom fishing a very exciting proposition. Meanwhile, Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” fished a group in the Red Man’s Striped Bass Tournament based in Tuckerton. He began the weekend fishing in the inlet with clams but found the ever present sand sharks too bothersome. He moved into the back bay to fish with live spot where he managed to pick up a 20-pound striper. Captain Fran fished hard both Saturday and Sunday and managed to boat another bass that weighed in at 15-pounds. The two fish gave him a total of 35-pounds, good enough for fifth place in the contest. The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” had a couple of student groups out recently. They took environment science classes from Cinnaminson High School under the tutelage of Mr. Angelini out for a day of catching and tagging whatever fish they could locate. According to mate Sal Rosa they caught a large number of croakers and small weakfish. He noted they were as well behaved group of young adults as he has ever seen. Last Sunday the “Miss Beach Haven had a group from Rutgers with a special permit to catch, tag, and release black sea bass. In addition to catching over 300 sea bass in 4 hours, they also caught a variety of triggerfish, croakers, and blackfish. The “Miss Beach Haven” has one more overnight tuna trip planned this fall which will take place October 29-30. On the last trip everyone limited out. FISHING: Excellent
The Indian Summer weather last weekend in Beach Haven resulted in some outstanding catches from the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association. Leading the way was a monumental tuna trip by the “Miss Beach Haven.” Sailing with its maximum 12 anglers, Captain Frank Camarda guided the group to a limit catch of tuna. Counting the fish caught by crew members, a total of 42 fish ended up on the boat. The trip began with an unproductive troll before stopping and putting out some chum at nightfall. The action then began with fish biting well into the night. A significant bite started again at first light until the anglers were too tired to catch any more. Two more weekend offshore tuna trips are planned for October. Captain Fran Verdi turned his attentions on the “Drop Off” to deep water wrecks last weekend, and the move paid off. Making just two stops, he found great “drop and reel” fishing for over 75 nice sized fish. His party quickly limited out on blackfish and caught quite a few nice triggerfish. Captain Fran said they also reeled up quite a few keeper black sea bass in the 16-22 inch range. The sea bass had to be returned as the season is closed until November 1. He reports he is watching the water temperature for a drop to indicate the stripers will be arriving in numbers. Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Starfish” took the Stoops family out recently on a half day trip. After picking up some cocktail blues in the inlet on the way out, he bottom fished close to the beach for great action on undersized spike weakfish. He made a move to deeper water and found plenty of croakers plus some larger weakfish. The “Starfish” returned to port with enough fish to fill two shelves of the Stoops family freezer. Captain Carl added that he has heard of at least two reports of limited out catches on striped bass in the ocean under bunker pods. FISHING: Good
Fall weather in the Beach Haven area has not been real conducive to good fishing thus far. Winds, rain, and heavy seas have forced more than one captain to either postpone trips or make adjustments. When the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been able to get fishing, though, they have found fish. Captain John Koegler of “Pop’s Pride reports he had a “fun trip” last Saturday. After finding the artificial reef area difficult to fish due to strong winds, he moved closer to shore where he found a heavy concentration of spike weakfish close to the beach. His party had non-stop action on the weakies including several keepers among the over 80 fish they released. There were also some small bluefish mixed in with the weakfish. Captain John said he is encouraged for the future by the sheer numbers of weakfish he has observed thus far this fall. The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda fished last week with Wayne’s group and found very good numbers of croakers and weakfish. They too released large numbers of weaks but did manage to find a nice bunch of keepers.Captain Dave Wittenborn on the “Compass Rose” reports he plans to hold off on trips for a week or so until the striped bass begin to arrive. He said he had to cancel a few trips in early September due to the weather or just slow fishing. At this point, he is excited about the upcoming striper action, especially the hot November action.Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” is also anxious for the striped bass to arrive. He is already taking some scouting trips looking for bass. He plans to fish both Little Egg and Barnegat Inlets this year and offering trolling, jigging, and white water fishing. FISHING: Good
Despite the closure of the summer flounder and black sea bass seasons, the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been managing to put fish in the fish box for their anglers. The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” fished a private party last weekend and after finding very few fluke, headed in and loaded up on croakers. Mate Sal Rosa reports the big boat will be sailing three weekends in October for tuna. The trips will leave around 9am. on Saturdays and return on Sunday in mid-afternoon. The departure dates are October 8, 15, and 28, and the trips are limited to just 12 anglers. Captain George Finck had the “Sparetime” out on a trolling trip to the canyons last weekend. He had two yellowfin tuna in the boat by 7 am. The final count for the trip was seven tuna and four mahi-mahi. They also released a white marlin. The trip went well on nice seas despite some foreboding weather reports. Captain John Koegler on the “Pop’s Pride” had a charter last Saturday and decided to fish in the bay due to the high seas in the ocean. The move paid out as they caught over 60 blowfish along with a 15-ounce kingfish, just shy of qualifying for a state “skillful angler award.” They also caught bluefish of all sizes. The anglers kept only the 16 largest blowfish along with some bluefish they trolled up from the inlet area. The blowfish were all over 16 inches in length. Captain John said it was the best blowfish action he has had in several years. Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Starfish” had a local Boy Scout troop out on Sunday, and they fished several miles outside the inlet. They caught lots of fish with enough keeper weakfish and bluefish for a good catch. Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” reports he is wreck fishing for another couple of weeks before he turns his attention to striped bass. With the positive reports he has heard north of Beach Haven, he expects them to be arriving shortly. FISHING: Good
A sudden dip in temperatures and some days of strong winds have made fishing more difficult for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association, but certainly not impossible. Between tropical storms and a series of northeasters, there have been large waves to fight on the ocean and much higher than normal tides in the bay waters inside Long Beach Island. The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captains Brant Whittaker and Frank Camarda and fought the 4-6 foot waves last weekend for a steady day of action for its anglers. Mate Sal Rosa reports the action was constant on sea bass, weakfish, snapper blues, and a few fluke. Although most of the fish had to be returned as they were either out of season or too short, the anglers who made the trip enjoyed the constant action. The “Miss Beach Haven” will be out again this weekend trying to end the fluke season on an upnote. Captain Lindsay Fuller on the “June Bug” had an offshore trolling trip over the weekend to the canyons and managed to put two yellowfin tuna in the box. The trip was originally slated to be an overnight combination chunking and trolling trip, but the fierce sea conditions nixed that plan. Choosing a window in the bad weather, Captain Lindsay made the trip hoping to get in on some of the hot tuna and wahoo action that had been around earlier in the week. The rough seas made fishing difficult and resulted in only the two tuna and one false albacore being reeled in. FISHING: Fair
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are working hard to find fish. With the black sea bass season having closed on Sunday until November 1, they are finding one less species to target.
Everyone continues to look for fluke, but that species has been playing hide and seek with everyone. The various storms recently have chased practically all of the fluke into the ocean, but they do not seem to be biting at any of the customary spots. There has been some chatter of fluke in the deeper water areas, 85-feet plus, but even there fish are scarce.
Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” says he will be targeting fluke until September 25 as well as hitting some of the deeper water wrecks that are holding blackfish, porgies, cod, and ling. He plans to start striped bass trips in mid October.
There are small bluefish around close to the beach, in the inlet, and even smaller ones in the bay waters. Anglers looking for fluke in the deeper water have reported some very big croakers on the bottom that are very hungry.
Offshore reports have been scarce thanks to the rough waters recently. Boats that did make it to the canyons have reported a good showing of white marlin along with some decent catches of yellowfin tuna.
