RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Excellent
Although Hurricane Sandy inflicted terrible damages on Long Beach Island and other areas of southern Ocean County, the residents and business owners have been working feverishly to get things back to normal. The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are among those who have worked hard and now declare they are ready, willing, and able for the 2013 fishing season to start. As an association, the captains will be making their presence knows at various fishing flea markets and fishing and boating shows. Captain John Lewis of the “Insatiable” reports his boat suffered no damage from the storm, and his dock, the Beach Haven Yacht Club Marina, is well on its way to being completely repaired. Captain John will be representing the Association at the various shows this winter and is excited about his new website www.insatiablesportfishing.net Two of the BHCFA boats are spending the winter having various work done to make them ready for this year’s fishing.Captain Bob Gerkens reports he is having the damages his boat, “Hot Tuna” repaired in the south which are currently about half completed. He regrets that he is missing out on the giant bluefin tuna this winter but is excited about his New Jersey charters this summer.Captain Lindsay Fuller’s boat, “June Bug” fortunately escaped the storm with little damage, but is spending the winter in Manteo, North Carolina as usual. It will undergo its usual refurbishing and make some offshore trips while down there. Captain Lindsay will have the “June Bug” back in New Jersey ready to go in May.Captain Tim Knorr reports his boat, the “William Knorr” was high and dry when Sandy hit and is looking better than ever. After freshening up the gel coat and doing some painting, the remaining maintenance was completed, and the boat is now ready to go. Captain Time reports he has updated his website www.LongBeachIslandCharterboat.com with no price increases or fuel surcharges. Once again the “William Knorr” will be running out of Forked River with customer pickups in Barnegat Light.Captain Carl Sheppard reports the “Star Fish” survived the storm in good shape with only some cosmetic damage when another boat broke free and rubbed against her. He is waiting for some extended warm weather to apply the gel coat and anticipates an April launch with fishing to start soon after that. Once again the “Star Fish” will call Morrison’s Marina home.Upcoming plans for Captain Carl include the annual Coast Guard inspection, a multi-page safety check list, and live safety drills for the captain and crew. Captain Carl adds that he is excited about the state dredging the channels and eliminating any debris in the water from Hurricane Sandy.Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com.

RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Good
As the 2012 fishing season comes to an end, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are wistfully putting their boats and gear away for the winter and planning already for the 2013 fishing season.

Captain Jimmy Zavacky who runs the “Reel Determined” reports his boat was undamaged from Hurricane Sandy. He temporarily moved the boat to Waretown where he experienced some good striped fishing out of Barnegat Inlet. He will be pulling the boat out of the water in Beach Haven soon for its winter’s rest.

Captain Fran Verdi of the “Francesca Marie” out of Cedar Run truly symbolizes the spirit of the captains of the BHCFA.

Fran had over 30 inches of water in his house in Cedar Run that sits about six feet off the ground. There was 2 inches of mud in the first floor. With much hard work and some gracious help he now has his house cleaned out and power restored to the house.

Captain Fran put the “Francesca Marie” back in the water the night before Thanksgiving. He has already put a goodly number of striped bass in the cooler. He plans to run a few more trips for bass and even some wreck fishing for blackfish.

Captain John Koegler reports he has put his boat, “Pop’s Pride,” to bed for the winter. With the weather creating so many unfishable days since Hurricane Sandy, he decided to cease operations until the spring. Captain John says the Holgate Wildlife Refuge appears to be changed with a couple of over-washes still open. In addition the north cut from the bay to the ocean looks closed with some changed offshore sand bars. He also believes the sedge banks near the Rutgers Research Station are greatly reduced.

Captain John Lewis has put his boat “Insatiable” away for the winter and has created a new web site www.insatiablesportfishing.net  Captain John has been busy doing boat deliveries in the off season going to North Carolina and Florida as well as several shorter trips. Captain Lindsay Fuller has just moved his boat “June Bug” down to Manteo, North Carolina, where the boat will spend the winter. Captain Lindsay usually has his maintenance work done there and gets in some bluewater fishing out of Oregon Inlet.

Some of the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are planning fishing trips over the next few days.

The “Miss Beach Haven” plans to sail on Thanksgiving Day to find some striped bass. The boat will leave the dock at 6 am. and return at noon or earlier if they should limit out again. In addition Captains Frank Camarda and Brant Whittaker are planning blackfish trips on Black Friday and Saturday. Check with the boat’s website to see what the actual hours of sailing will be.

Captain Fran Verdi has the “Francesca Marie” in the water and ready to sail. He is putting together some open boat trips for Thanksgiving, Friday, and Saturday. Get in touch with him if you want to do some striper fishing.

Atlantic Ocean - November 15th, 2012
supplied by: Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association
RECORDED:    52 °   FISHING: Poor
At this point the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have still been unable to get any productive fishing in.

There are several reasons for this, all of which are naturally tied in with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy.

Many of the boats which had been removed from the water have still not yet been refloated. The captains are all busy getting their own homes back in order and helping others with problems. In addition, although access has very recently been established to Long Beach Island, there are still many services not yet operating. One of these is a source of fuel for the boats.

There are reports that striped bass have arrived in force in the Barnegat Inlet area and have made their way to the south. Although the beaches are still in ragged shape, some surf fishermen have been able to get on the beach and have been scoring well on bass from just legal size up to 20-pounds. There have also been reports of bass in the bay waters feeding on live eels and live spots.

Most of the local bait and tackle shops also received extensive damage so getting a steady source of bait is a bit of a problem. Margaret O’Brien at Jingles Bait and Tackle reports she is in her shop and has been able to get some fresh bunker.

Many of the local fishing tournaments have been cancelled. This includes the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic and the Striped Bass Tournament sponsored by the Stafford Township Police.

RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Poor
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have suffered greatly from Hurricane Sandy much like many other residents of the New Jersey shore. Fortunately, at this point, it appears that some careful advance preparation for the storm helped their boats survive intact. Most of the captains such as Captain Carl Sheppard feel they are ready to fish right now but getting anglers to Long Beach Island is practically impossible right at this time. His boat, the “Star Fish,” suffered only some minor cosmetic damage. Captain Lindsay Fuller reports his boat the “June Bug,” is in the water and ready to go, but he has concerns about waiting for the large amount of debris in the bay waters to clear out.Captain George Finck reports the “Sparetime” made it through the storm successfully, but he is still waiting himself to get back on Long Beach Island. Other captains managed to pull their boats out of the water before the storm arrived. Captain John Lewis of “Insatiable Charters” plans to keep his boat on land now until spring. Captain Fran Verdi reports the “Francesca Marie” is safely out of the water, and he hopes to fish again this fall. However, his home suffered significant damage from the storm, and that is where his attention is now focused. Captain Fran is still hopeful to do some striper fishing. All of the captains of the BHCFA agree that Hurricane Sandy was just a temporary setback and that good fishing days are in store for all of them. Fishing captains are a hardy breed and possess the strength to persevere through adversity. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 877-524-2423.

RECORDED:    58 °   FISHING: Poor
Like everyone else along the Atlantic seaboard, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are anxiously awaiting the official arrival of Hurricane Sandy. The preliminary winds and tides do not bode well for the next day or so.The captains have been spending the past few days getting their boats, homes, and families safe and secure. With all predictions calling for strong winds, extremely high tides, and torrential rainfall, they await what may be the strongest storm of their lifetimes. Some of the boats of the BHCFA’s fleet have been removed from the water and securely anchored down. Other boats remain in the water to weather the storm. These boats have been stripped of anything that might be susceptible to the winds. The dock lines have been doubled down with sufficient length to accommodate the expected high tides. All of this work was completed before Sandy’s arrival as once the storm is in full fury any adjustments can be dangerous. As far as the fishing goes, the striped bass bite prior to the storm was slow in the Beach Haven area. Boats had been making trips to the north in the Barnegat Inlet and Island Beach area to find bass by trolling and jigging. It is hoped that the storm will stimulate the bite, and the striper fishing will light up once things settle down on the weather front.

RECORDED:    66 °   FISHING: Fair
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are anxiously keeping their eyes on approaching Hurricane Sandy. Although projections currently call for her to pass by well offshore, strong winds and large waves are expected in the area from the middle of this coming weekend until early next week.

Some of the captains have plans to fish in the Seashell Club’s annual Striped Bass Tournament. With current weather predictions calling for decent conditions on Friday and Saturday, some serious fishing is expected to take place.

Up to this point the striped bass catches in the Beach Haven area have been few and far between. Some captains are expressing the hope that the upcoming storm will produce the impetus for the arrival of the bass in force.

Captain Fran Verdi on the “Francesca Marie” had a crew of hard working anglers fishing in the Red Men’s striped bass tournament last weekend. Despite putting long hours and some hard work into his fishing, Captain Fran was unable to coax any bass into his boat. There were a total of 31 boats entered in the tournament, and only two striped bass were weighed in.

Atlantic Ocean - October 17th, 2012
supplied by: Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association
RECORDED:    58 °   FISHING: Great
Strong winds have been plaguing the Beach Haven fishing fleet for the past week, but when the boats have managed to get out, they have caught fish.

Captain John Koegler managed to take the “Pop’s Pride” out last weekend for a good fishing trip on some inshore wrecks. Fishing with only three anglers, they managed 20 keeper black sea bass in addition to another 80 throwbacks. They also caught some beautiful triggerfish topped by a 6-pound triggerfish which is very large for this area. Captain John said that the wrecks have not been fished hard recently because of all the wind, and that is making for some drop and reel fishing.

Captain John said that he used the north cut of the inlet just off the tip of Holgate like he usually does, and had to slow down when he noticed shallow water where he usually travels through. He advises all boaters to use care when using this means to get from the bay out into the ocean.

The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” with Captains Brant Whittaker and Frank Camarda ran two tuna trips recently. In the first one, rough seas made fishing difficult for all hands on board. They managed to anchor up with a decent slick and promptly picked up three nice yellowfins. Then one of the anglers hooked on to a very large swordfish. After two hours of fighting the fish, the line broke before they were able to get a gaff into the fish. Unfortunately that action ended the tuna bite for the day.

On another trip last Saturday the seas were much calmer and after a fruitless bit of trolling, they anchored with their slick. The action was slow but they did manage to put four yellowfins in the box, lost a few more, and picked up a few mahi-mahi. Then just as they were ready to pull the anchor for the day, they had tuna around them. They put four in the box and lost a really big one. The tuna were in the 80-pound class. Mate Sal Rosa says they have some special 10-hour trips coming up in the near future.

RECORDED:    60 °   FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are morphing from their summer fishing habits into the wild and wooly action of fall fishing in New Jersey.            Fluke season is over, and the current black sea bass season will be suspended on October 14. This all means that the prized striped bass and big bluefish will soon be arriving. There are currently schools of bunker just off the beach that are holding some 15-pound bluefish along with a few stripers.            The striped bass have not yet arrived in the bay waters but will be here shortly once the water temperatures drop another couple of degrees. The bay is still filled with bait, and there are stories of stripers to the north so it should be only another week or so.            Meanwhile, Captain George Finck had a nice charter a couple of days ago  on the “Sparetime” with C J LaCosta who took along his two boys and his father. Their trip began on an ocean reef where they picked up some nice bluefish and black sea bass. When the winds got strong and made fishing a bit uncomfortable, they finished the trip in the bay where they had a good catch of blowfish along with some sand sharks.            The captains report the prime fishing dates in November for stripers are filling up fast, and they recommend that anglers pick their dates to fish now before they lose the chance.  Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 877-524-2423.

Atlantic Ocean - October 3rd, 2012

RECORDED:    68 °   FISHING: Excellent
Summer flounder fishing has ended for the year in New Jersey, but big black sea bass are filling the void for the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association.Captain Carl Sheppard had Boy Scout Troop 65 from Haddonfield out for a bottom fishing trip last Saturday on the “Star Fish.” The boys and family members managed to catch over 250 black sea bass in just 4 hours of fishing. Despite a stiff Northwest wind, the boat rode comfortably once anchored up.            Fish were caught as soon as the lines hit and water with a ratio of keepers of about three to one. In addition to the sea bass there was a good showing of triggerfish. Captain Carl advised his anglers to keep a hooked trigger in the water as often the rest of the school with swim with the hooked fish making them easier targets. An extra excitement was proved by some feisty bluefish up to 2.5 pounds which provided more thrills for the scouts.            Captain Fran Verdi on the “Francesca Marie” had a group out for some black sea bass fishing on Friday, and they limited out on sea bass by 11am and also boated 8 triggerfish. Captain Fran had to work to find where the fish were located, but once he got set up, it was drop and reel fishing. Usually they could not get the baits to the bottom before the fish hit.            Captain Fran reports he is getting anxious for the striped bass to arrive and feels the action should be starting in another week or so. Until then he plans to fish for sea bass. He has heard of stripers being caught off the sod banks late in the evening and early in the morning. Captain John Lewis took the “Insatiable” offshore last Sunday for a day trolling trip due to the slow chunking so far. Despite a favorable forecast by the weather man, strong winds and high waves made fishing offshore very difficult. Despite the conditions, the party managed a white marlin and a 20-pound mahi-mahi. Ironically, the talk on the radio was of a good night chunking with several boats actually limiting out on yellowfin tuna
