FISHING: Excellent
Captain Lindsay Fuller of the “June Bug,” a member of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association, had an outstanding offshore tuna trip last weekend. Fuller had Jim Hutchinson Sr. and Jr., George Roma, Bob Opperman, Paul Hopkins, and Dave Rinear to the Toms Canyon on an overnight tuna trip combining trolling and chunking. The group caught 19 longfin tuna from 40-75 pounds, all on the troll. They also put another 25 mahi-mahi in the box. The chunking produced no tuna but did result in releases of small swordfish and mako shark as well as numerous mahi. The almost non-stop action on the 24-hour trip kept mates Dante Soriente and Nate Figley busy the entire time.Other Association boats continued their strong catches from bottom fishing. Captain George Finck of “Sparetime Charters” had Bill Dalton, Harry Festa, and Dom Ferrante out for an action packed reef trip. The half day venture produced many sea bass and porgies.Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” started last Friday looking for bunker but had difficulty due to the light chop. They then drifted off the red tower for strong weakfish action on small fish. A stop at the Little Egg Reef resulted in over 100 fish but only several were keeper sized. Verdi fished an open boat on Saturday at the Little Egg Reef. They worked three spots on the reef and it was fish every time. They ended the day with 16 keepers and 2 porgies. The “Star Fish” with Captain Carl Sheppard fished the reefs Saturday with a father and son team from Ireland. In two hours they caught over 75 sea bass. The surprise of the trip was a 3.5 lb porgy. On Sunday he teamed up with Captain John Koegler for another big catch of sea bass and porgies.Captain John Koegler fished the “Pop's Pride” on Saturday and despite a constant increasing NE wind had a great day catching sea bass and Porgies. His comment on the reef fishing was “There is presently a good supply of sea bass available plus some of the biggest porgies anyone has seen in years. No matter what, you will return with quality fish for dinner.” Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com

FISHING: Great
The boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are finding some of the very best bottom fishing of the season while they anxiously await the arrival of big numbers of striped bass. The “Star Fish” under Captain Carl Sheppard had two bachelor parties this past weekend. They found small schools of bunker being attacked by large blues from just off shore all the way to the reefs but saw no bass around. The weather could not have been nicer when the Markowitz party went wreck fishing on the reefs, and caught over 100 fish, the majority being black bass and porgies. Sean Nagle’s bachelor party found some fish on the reefs and some small blues and weak fish off the Red Tower on open bottom in Beach Haven. Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” found very good Fishing on Sunday. He went through Beach Haven Inlet and worked his way north looking for the bunker on the surface. After not locating any, his anglers made some drops off the red tower in hopes of weakfish. They picked off several small spikes but nothing of size. The final stop was the Little Egg Reef, and they fished one area for the next two and half hours. Their total catch resulted in 4 blackfish, one triggerfish, 15 sea bass, and 20 porgies. FISHING: Good
The recent spate of nasty weather kept the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association at the dock for the past week. Now that things are clearing up, there will be some decent wreck and reef fishing.
The “Miss Beach Haven,” a head boat under Captains Brant Whittaker and Frank Camarda, will be sailing weekends for more sea bass and some blackfish action. He fished Monday with the best sea bass fishing of the year. Over 2000 total sea bass were landed with many of keeper size. Most anglers had over 15 keepers with at least two anglers going home with over 20. Mixed in were several porgies and one trigger fish.
Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” plans to begin his fall striped bass trips on or about the full moon of October 14. He will be running both charter trips and some “open boat” opportunities.
Captain Lindsay Fuller of the “June Bug” has some overnight tuna trips to the canyons planned which combine both trolling and chunking.

FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are finding good numbers of fish in the bay waters, the inshore areas of the ocean, and at the Barnegat Ridge. While they prefer fishing in the ocean, when the strong northeast winds blow, they have been finding fish in the calmer bay waters. Captain Carl Sheppard reports the “Star Fish” fished one day last week with Captain Vic for plenty of sea bass on the wrecks. Captain John had the boat to the Barnegat Ridge for little tunny and unlimited bluefish to 16-pounds another day. Because of the recent northeast swells, Friday was spent in the bay. Fortunately, the party found weakfish amongst the sharks, sea robins, and immature black bass. Saturday was much of the same, as 11 people celebrated a bachelor party. On Sunday Captain Sheppard and his party celebrated a 21st birthday, with black bass, bluefish, and some nice porgies. Captain John Koegler had the “Pop's Pride's” out to the Barnegat Ridge for some great slammer bluefish action. The Roger Sanford party enjoyed a great trip as they released over 30 monster blues up to 15 pounds, while keeping only two. Captain Koegler predicts the major NE storm over the weekend will greatly improve inshore fishing. He and other boats in the Association are able to fish for a wide variety of pan fish in the bay if the ocean is rough. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com

FISHING: Great
Captain Carl Sheppard of the “Star Fish” from the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association Fleet says it is always a mystery why the fish seem to come back when the people who want to catch them leave. His parties did very well this weekend on croakers in 40-feet of water and small blues on the inshore side of the Little Egg Reef. One day the “Star Fish” ran offshore to the Barnegat Ridge, where James Maywright and his bachelor party of 5 caught 28 false albacore, big blues up to 16.25 lbs, and Bonita. After dropping the bachelor party off at Morrison's Marina, he did a quick clean up, and ran to the Brant Beach Yacht Club, were we picked up Greg Florey's bridal party of 15 for a champagne cruise to the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club, where a large reception awaited them. What a change from the morning's fishing trip. Capt. Adam Nowalsky from the charter boat "Karen Ann II" reports a rough week weather-wise, but he found good numbers of croakers and sea bass. He believes they will provide good fishing action in the coming weeks. The sea bass are plentiful but small with 8 out of 10 fish throwbacks. The Bill Getz party had drop and reel fishing with almost 3 dozen sea bass to take home. The croaker action is good in 45'-50' of water, although you have to look around a bit to find them. The Ed Beskin party had all they wanted of the tasty “hardheads.” Captain John Koegler of “Pop’s Pride” bottom fished for croakers and sea bass last Friday with good results. One spot produced some huge croakers over 2-pounds. They also picked up some small blues near the inlet on the way home. On Saturday Captain Koegler took his party to the Barnegat Ridge for some good action on slammer bluefish and false albacore. The final count was more than 15 albacore and 30 bluefish.
The “Miss Beach Haven” with captains Frank Camarda and Brant Whittaker fished the Little Egg Reef on Saturday for steady action on croakers, some weakfish, and small bluefish. On Sunday the “Miss Beach Haven” went looking for blackfish and found some porgies, some keeper sea bass, and limit catches of blackfish. Dave Agar of Beach Haven caught and released over 20 blackfish. The group also caught some nice trigger fish and small bluefish.

FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association were sorry to see the summer flounder season come to an end last weekend. Although the weekend itself was pretty much a bust thanks to Hurricane Hanna, the days previous saw some of the best catches of the summer.
Now the boats that do their fishing inshore will turn their attention to some nice sea bass on the wrecks and reef sites, large schools of croakers, and isolated schools of bluefish.
The offshore canyons are holding good numbers of tuna, and the captains have some open dates for these trips. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com

FISHING: Good
As the 2008 summer flounder season nears its end, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are returning to port with some of their best catches of the year.Capt. Adam Nowalsky of the charter boat Karen Ann II out of Great Bay Marina reports fluke fishing on the ocean was the hot ticket last week with the local reefs providing good catches when the drift conditions cooperated. The Eisner family had a good catch of fluke with brothers Dave and Sam landing some nice fish to 7.5-pounds. The Colangelo party had 9 keepers to 22" with Jerry leading the high hook. The Detweiler family encountered poor drifting conditions but still managed 8 keepers to 22-inches with Lisa leading the way. Captain John Koegler on the charter boat “Pop’s Pride” reports some “exceptional” fishing late in the summer. He said the warmer ocean water brought his best fluke day of the season as well as the top day for sea bass. The day started with a slow drift which was perfect for the sea bass, and when the wind came up and sped up the drift, the fluke bite got hot. The keeper ration was 4-1, his best of the summer. Captain Koegler has some open days and plans to fish daily until the fluke season closes.
Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” was fishing south of Little Egg Inlet in 70-feet of water when Brian Simao hooked up with a 25-inch fluke. Brian’s group added several more keeper fluke as well as some croakers and other species to the fish box. On another trip Captain Sheppard found the same mixture of fish in addition to the biggest sea bass Brian Curley had ever seen let alone caught.

Friday they had perfect conditions and they boated a couple of sea bass and 12 keeper fluke and a fair amount of shorts. A lot of small sea bass have moved in to the bay to keep the kids busy.Capt. Adam Nowalsky of the “Karen Ann II” sailing from Great Bay Marina reports fluke fishing is the story right now with the ocean fluke in full swing. Dave Young and crew had a nice catch of fluke to near 6 pounds. Scott Hendrickson was down for a bachelor party in Atlantic City for groom-to-be Ryan. FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been seeing a noticeable improvement in their catches over the past week. Captain George Finck of “Sparetime Charters” had the Jim Musser family just 3 miles offshore on a trolling trip. They boated 35 nice bluefish, keeping 27. On the next day he had Janet and Margie Mitchell and family on a trip to the Little Egg Reef. The group picked up 2 keeper fluke out of 8 total caught along with 6 keeper sea bass out of a total of 14. Matt Pribila and friends went out with Captain Finck to the Little Egg Reef another day where they managed one 20-inch keeper fluke out of numerous shorts along with 7 keeper sea bass up to 4-pounds. Dave Wittenborn on the “Compass Rose” says his fluke fishing remains hot. He took Joe McCall and family out who were cashing in Joe’s Father's Day gift certificate. They fished the Garden State South Reef and had a steady pick of fluke for the entire trip. They landed 35 fluke and put 9 keepers in the box. The largest was 22.5-inches with several more over 20-inches. They also landed a nice sized ling and a big blue humpback sea bass. Captain Frank Camarda on the head boat “Miss Beach Haven” said everything fell into place on Sunday with a “perfect drift.” Pool winner was Al Benedict from Philadelphia with a 5.5-pound fluke. Many anglers had 4 keepers each along with many shorts. On Sunday morning Captain Dave Kreines had the Marty Kounitz family on the “Sweet Baby” for a combination of fishing and nature-seeing on the bay. The ocean looked so calm that the group asked for a change of plan. They spent the balance of the trip on the glass smooth Atlantic catching and releasing a half dozen Fluke. Captain Lindsay Fuller on the “June Bug” fished the Kennedy family from California on Saturday Cpl. Steven McKenney, USMC aboard who just returned safe and sound from Iraq a month ago. It was interesting to find out what is really going on over there. Steve told us that the play that the U.S. media gives the relatively few insurgent attacks is overkill. Things are far more peaceful than portrayed. His job was to set up the computers and communications for all of the outlying bases, both for the U.S. forces and the Iraqi policy and military. Hoping for some Bonita on light tackle, they fished the Barnegat South Ridge. They found no Bonita but plenty of big slammin' Bluefish. Ryan Kennedy (9) caught the biggest fish of his life. There was lots of huffing and puffing to get those 12-15 pound monsters to the boat. Junior Mate Hep Hepburn ran the cockpit for the day. That was a first for him and he handled it well. On Sunday, the Kennedys fished on again with Captain Fuller for fluke in the bay but could find no keepers.Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com
