FISHING: Great
It must be must be mid-summer in Beach Haven as the offshore fishing action is starting to heat up for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association.Captain Bob Gerkens on the “Hot Tuna” successfully fished the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club’s first offshore tournament on Saturday as a warm-up to the White Marlin Invitational. He started a little south of the Spencer Canyon and worked a little further south but still north of the Wilmington where his crew caught the two largest yellowfin tuna in the tournament. Both fish were over 40-pounds with Val Zak of Oceanside Bait and Tackle boating the largest. Her fish put her in the lead in the woman’s division of the club for the season for yellowfin tuna.Captain John Koegler went to the inshore tuna grounds on the “Starfish” looking for tuna. They picked up a fat 41-inch bluefin early in the day that fought extra hard and took 15-minuts to get to the boat. Unfortunately, that was the only fish to show up. Captain John said there was a good reading on the fish finder of both squid and eels. Captain George Fink of “Sparetime Charters” made one trip offshore looking for tuna and sharks. He found no tuna but did catch and release some brown sharks and returned with some mahi-mahi. In trips closer to shore he has been finding some very good bottom action at the Garden State South Reef where the black sea bass were all nice sized with just a few shorts. He also caught fluke on the sides of the wrecks using live minnows with squid.Captain Dave Wittenborn on the “Compass Rose” also has been finding some decent fluke and sea bass fishing at the Garden State South Reef. On Monday Paul Buchhoer had his three son-in-laws out. They managed 13 fluke with three making it into the fish box. Paul had the largest fluke, a 21-incher. FISHING: Good
A combination of extremely hot weather and severe thunderstorms has made fishing in Beach Haven a challenge for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association.
Captain John Lewis of the “Insatiable” out of Beach Haven had the Lou Torries party out to the canyons looking for tuna. Due to cloud cover, there were no current water temperature reports, and he had to explore. After looking around the Wilmington Canyon with no luck, they moved 20 miles south and found a temperature break. They managed to go 3 for 3 on yellowfin tuna in the 50-60 pound class.
Captain John said the highlight of the trip was Lou’s sister Mickie catching the largest tuna to celebrate her birthday. Mickie is an avid angler who is recovering from a stroke. This was her first canyon trip, and it was a good one. According to Captain John, “Mickie is one tough lady.”
The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captains Frank Camarda and Brant Whittaker found the fluke were not biting at the inshore reefs like they had been just a few days ago. According to Mate Sal Rosa they managed to boat some fish, but not at the pace they wanted. He feels now that the thunderstorms seem to have cleared, the full moon phase has passed, and the current is slowing down, the bite will improve drastically. Recent pool winners were Scotty from Beach Haven, John the “Cheeseman” from Manahawkin, and the “beautiful Linda.”

FISHING: Good
Although a series of intense thunderstorms has been plaguing the southern Ocean County area for the past week, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been making their way between the storm cells and finding some decent fishing. The bay bite has slowed quite a bit mainly due to dirty water churned up from the storms and sharply increased water temperatures. When you throw in hot weather and a goodly number of greenhead flies, most captains are setting course for the cooler ocean waters. The ocean inshore wrecks and reefs like the Little Egg and Garden State South are producing large numbers of fluke. Naturally, there are more throwbacks than keepers, but if you put the time in, the keepers will show up. The black sea bass are mainly in the deeper water wrecks, but a few are around the inshore reefs also. Captain Fran Verdi has his new boat, the “Francesca Marie” ready to rock and roll with plenty of room for six anglers. He is completing a couple more things before making his first offshore trip to the tuna grounds, but it should be soon. His recent fluke trips have resulted in some filled fish boxes topped by a very nice 24-inch doormat. The canyons are still very productive for those boats setting up trolling rigs with good numbers of tuna around in addition to some mahi-mahi and some reports of billfish. FISHING: Excellent
The port of Beach Haven is settling into the summer mode of fishing, and the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are getting their fill of the action both inshore and offshore. Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” had an excellent week and weekend of fishing. Captain Carl found the bay waters to be slow, but offshore the sea was calm, and the fish hungry. He found a good number of large black bass on a few wrecks, and some nice keeper fluke between the wrecks. It was necessary to try a number of stops before finding good action. His anglers also had some fun with 5-foot brown sharks which were under the bunker pods. Captain George Finck on the “Sparetime” had Nicole Kelly and family out for a day reef fishing. They returned to the dock with a nice catch of fluke and black sea bass and also released many shorts. On Sunday Captain George took his 17 year old grandson Joey out to the canyons for some tuna action. The bite was slow but Joey did manage to catch the only yellowfin of the day. Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” spend last week picking away at sea bass on area reefs and wrecks. Friday’s storms slowed the fishing on Saturday, but Captain Fran found some good fluke fishing on Sunday. He had a group from Pittsburgh out, and they mugged the fluke. The biggest fish of the day was a 27-incher caught on a Bucktailboys bucktail tipped with Gulp. Captain Fran will now be fishing on his new boat, a 2011 May-Craft center console that is 27-feet long. The “Francesca Marie” is powered by twin 174 HP Evinrude E-Tec outboards. The new rig is fully equipped and will hold 6 anglers. Captain Bob Gerkens on the “Hot Tuna” took top honors in the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club’s annual tuna tournament. He had the largest individual tuna and the top weight total for 3 yellowfins, all in the 50-pound range. His crew consisted of Captain John Lewis, Pete Nork, and Matt Ruark.Because of the a sloppy ocean recently, Captain Bob had the Mike Mayer family from Pottstown, Pa., spend their half day trip in the quieter bay waters on the “Hot Tuna.” They anchored up and used a chum pot to bring in a good number of large sand sharks that produced some exciting catch and release fishing. The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” with captains Frank Camarda and Brant Whittaker worked hard last Saturday with poor drift conditions to put a mixed bag of fluke and sea bass together. Mike was the pool winner with a 4-pound fluke. The drift Sunday was a bit better and it made a big difference. A steady procession of fluke, sea bass, and skates were coming over the rails. Everyone took fish home with Leon taking top honors.Captain Lindsay Fuller fished the Wilmington Canyon recently with the John Goodbred party from Lancaster, Pa. They left the dock at midnight and started fishing at 4:40 am. They boated the first yellowfin at 6:30 and managed to boat 5 yellowfin out of 9 that struck with the largest at 40-pounds. They also picked up a nice 15-pound mahi-mahi. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 877-524-2423.

FISHING: Fair
After a week of strong northeast winds and large ocean swells, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are looking forward to milder breezes and more summerlike weather. As the last of the winds left the area, some of the boats managed to put together some decent catches.
Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” fished three days last weekend and managed to find some keeper black sea bass along with a 5-foot brown shark while fishing offshore. He also picked up some bluefish on the troll along with some fluke while drifting in the back bay waters.
The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” did some bottom fishing over the weekend and battled the conditions to put some nice sea bass on the deck. The pool winner on Saturday was a 3.5-pound sea bass. On Sunday they looked for summer flounder and found some with sea bass mixed in. Tommy Hook took top honors with a fat fluke. On a pair of trips before the northeaster arrived, pool winners included Mike from Tabernacle with a 4-pound sea bass and John Cheeseman with a 4.5-pound fluke. Mate Sal Rosa says the “Miss Beach Haven” is already signing up anglers for their open boat tuna trips in the fall. Some of the dates are already sold out.

FISHING: Great
Several days of poor weather have put a damper on the Beach Haven fishing scene. As the weather begins to break, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are looking forward to the upcoming weekend with optimism.
One captain, however, managed to brave the ocean conditions on Monday on a shark trip and said it was “magical.” Captain John Koegler on the boat “Pop’s Pride” headed out before sunset to see what he could find as the full moon ignited the bay waters.
With a west wind behind him, he had a smooth trip out as he traveled offshore toward the 20 fathom line. There were some thunderstorms around, but he used his radar to help avoid them.
He began the day trolling hoping to pick up some bluefish for shark bait or a bluefin tuna for dinner, but found no takers. At 7 am. Captain John started a shark slick which extended downwind out of sight.
The first shark hit some two and a half hours later, a tough blue shark about 8-feet long. He snapped the line and shortly thereafter, a tougher shark was hooked up. After some skillful angling, the shark came to the surface only 90 feet from the stern. It was a big mako.
After a long fight, the shark was brought to the boat and gaffed. With the boat having reached its limit, and the weather turning bad, Captain John decided to head for the dock.
The decision was a sound one as northeast winds at over 30 mph hit just as they were halfway through the inlet. The last few miles were stormy ones, but “Pop’s Pride” made it safely to the dock. The trip up the bay was much different than the trip several hours earlier on the way out.
The big mako measured out to be 81-inches and weighed in at 139-pounds.

FISHING: Excellent
Memorial Day weekend has passed and the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are reporting some very good black sea bass action on the inshore ocean waters. They are also looking into some improving summer flounder fishing.
Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” reports that the sea bass bite on the inshore wrecks and reefs has been hot and heavy with lots of fish being caught and coolers being filled. He has been hearing of an improved fluke bite in the ocean and in the back bays so he plans to focus on both sea bass and fluke now.
To spice up the action on his charters, Captain Fran has started a yearlong fishing tournament. Anyone fishing on the “Drop Off” can enter for a $5 entry fee per each of the three divisions of fish-sea bass, fluke, and stripers. The winner of each category receives a free trip in 2013 along with 100% of the money in each pot. Winners will be determined by total length.
The “Miss Beach Haven” did a trip once again for Rutgers University to tag black sea bass for studies. There were about 25 anglers on board who managed to tag 225 fish from 11-21 inches long. In total, over 300 fish were caught. In last weekend’s head boat fishing, Captain Frank Camarda put the “Miss Beach Haven” right on the fish, and over 136 keepers went into the coolers along with tons of shorts. Top hook was Junior with 16 keepers and Dave from Beach Haven won the pool with a 4-pound sea bass. Sunday’s fishing was not as good as Saturday’s with a decent amount of fish coming over the rails, but they had to work hard for every fish.
Captain George Finck had the “Sparetime” out to the reefs last weekend with the Ray Johnston family. The Johnston’s found the fishing to be very enjoyable, and they came home with a nice catch of black sea bass.
Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” reports the recent spate of fair weather and warmer water has been a boon to the fishing. Captain Carl reports good catches of sea bass over the past two weekends with his half day trips averaging around 100 fish with about 15% keepers. He says the females are about to spawn and the fish seem more active in the deeper water of at least 70-feet deep. He may do some fluking in the back bay waters and plans to look for the warmer water for the best bite.
After being delayed by a combination of bad weather and electrical problems, Captain Lindsay Fuller finally brought the “June Bug” back to Beach Haven from its winter storage on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He tried some fishing on the way back as he worked temperature breaks in the water. He managed to pick up one very nice mahi along with another medium sized one.

FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are looking forward to Memorial Day Weekend with a great amount of anticipation. The lousy weather that has been plaguing the South Jersey shore looks to be out of the picture for the weekend.
Fluking in the inshore bay waters has been slow thus far in the season thanks to variable water temperatures and an unusually large amount of brown algae slime which makes drifting very difficult. Prospects for ocean fishing, however, are very positive.
Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” believes that pods of bunker will be moving up the coast accompanied by feeding stripers to spark that fishery just off the beaches of Long Beach Island. Captain Fran says he missed out on the opening days of the black sea bass season last weekend thanks to the weather, but he plans to hit them hard this week right on through the weekend. All signs point to some big schools of decent sized sea bass on the reefs and wrecks.
Chief mate and bottle washer Sal Rosa of the head boat “Miss Beach Haven” reports the boat will be sailing this Saturday and Sunday looking for some big black sea bass. Captain Frank Camarda of the “Miss Beach Haven” will always stop on the way in and out to the fishing grounds if he sees other signs of fish such as birds working in the inlet.
Captain John Koegler had a group out last weekend on the “Starfish” that had hoped to fish in the ocean. The northeast winds of 15-20 miles per hour forced a change in plans and they headed into Great Bay to see what they could catch there. Although the conditions there were not the best, the group managed some decent action catching 3 bluefish along with 2 feisty dogfish.
Captain Dave Wittenborn reports the “Compass Rose” is in the water and ready for some striper fishing. This weekend Captain Dave plans to fish the LBI Cup sponsored by the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club.

As summer gets closer, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are taking care of some last minute details to have their boats tip-top for their busy summer schedules. Captain John Lewis of the “Insatiable” has returned from Puerto Rico to Beach Haven with the private boat which he captains. Since that boat is in the process of being sold, Captain John is now completing his spring prep on the “Insatiable” and plans to be fully ready for fishing charters in early June. The captain and crew on the head boat “Miss Beach Haven” has taken time the past two weeks to do some last minute painting. Plans call for the boat to sail for black sea bass at 8 am. on the weekend of May 19 and May 20. Captain Lindsay Fuller planned to bring the “June Bug” back from Manteo, North Carolina last weekend. He reports the boat is in great shape after having some minor items taken care of in its winter storage in the south. Captain Lindsay planned to do some fishing on the way back north. There have been reports of bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, bigeyes, sharks, and even some swordfish that he hopes to encounter on the way. Once the “June Bug” is back berthed in Beach Haven, Captain Lindsay will be ready for both inshore and offshore charters.
