FISHING: Great
The past week has seen the captains and boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association concentrating in the ocean. First mate and chief bottle washer of the “Miss Beach Haven,” Sal Rosa, reports that the fishing has been slow as the big head boat looks for fluke and sea bass. The anglers are catching some fish, but nothing like it will be in another week or so. Captain Fran Verdi of the “Drop Off” had a party on Saturday that encountered a case of “mal de mer.” Just as they were starting to pick a few nice bass and fluke after several spots, his group experienced some seasickness. Captain Fran headed in for the calmer waters inside the inlet where they picked up 10 fluke that were all short of the 18-inch mark. They had managed a few keeper sea bass early in the day. The “Drop Off’s” adventures on Sunday were more productive. Captain Fran hit his first wreck in 70-feet of water and worked his way out to a small snag on the bottom in 90-feet of water where they hit a bonanza. Thanks to the calm conditions, they were able to stay right on top of the snag. They ended the day with 39 keeper sea bass and 5 ling. Their top fish was a very respectable 4-pound black sea bass. They used clam, mackerel, and Gulp baits. The “Star Fish” under Captain Carl Sheppard, who occasionally shares the duties with Captain Vic Bertotti, has been doing well with a main course of bluefin and yellowfin tuna caught offshore. On Sunday Captain John Koegler took the “Star Fish” out looking for bluefin. On the way he mugged up on 15-pound bluefish. Captain John said the blues were “mad and unhappy” as they fought fiercely jumping out of the water at times. Captain Carl fished the Little Egg Reef one day for fluke and found the fish scarce. When he moved off to some wrecks without fish pots around, he found some keeper sea bass and fluke mixed in with the throwbacks. Captain John had the “Pop’s Pride out for some flounder fishing at the Little Egg Reef around the Rutgers Buoys and managed a handful of keepers along with a number of throwbacks. FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are finding that the fishing action is changing into a summer mode. The hot striped bass action just off the beaches and the cod and ling action on the wrecks and reefs are being replaced by a nice fluke bite and some hot action offshore for tuna and sharks. The fluke and sea bass bites on the inshore wrecks and reefs have yet to get into high gear. Captain John Koegler of the “Pop’s Pride” reports he had a good day last Saturday drifting along the Intercoastal Waterway from Beach Haven south to the inlet. Although he had to wade his way through quite a few throwbacks, his anglers managed 3 very nice fluke ranging from 18-21 inches. Captain John said that he experimented with a variety of baits and rigs to find the right combination. He explained that he was catching fish better on hi/lo rigs rather than the tradition fluke rigs. He managed to catch some fish on live minnows, but all of the keepers were caught on Gulp. On another recent trolling trip he managed to pick up some bluefin tuna about 45-inches in length. He also heard about some decent shark fishing in the same area. Captain John added that the reef and wreck fishing has been slow because of the cooler water temperatures on the bottom despite some warm water on the surface. He says a storm is needed to churn up the water and mix the water up to a uniform temperature.

FISHING: Good
The 2011 fishing season for the Captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association is officially under way. The boats are ready to fish bay waters for summer flounder, close to the beaches for striped bass, the artificial reefs and wrecks for black sea bass and fluke, inshore ocean waters for bluefish, and offshore for bigger game fish such as tuna, sharks, and billfish. Captain Dave Wittenborn of the “Compass Rose” says he believes the upcoming warm weather will be heating the water up to give the bottom fishing a boast. Although the striped bass bite has been slowing recently as the fish make their way up the coast, Captain Dave reports there are still some bass and sharks mixed in feeding on the bunker pods. Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” reports he is running charters and open boat trips after fluke and sea bass. Captain Frank Camarda and the head boat “Miss Beach Haven” is also sailing for fluke and sea bass. Captain Lindsay Fuller finally has the “June Bug” back from North Carolina and reports he picked up a couple of mahi-mahi on the trip up the coast. Captain John Lewis who runs the “Insatiable” reportedly trolled the 25-fathom hole recently and picked up six12-pound bluefish and one 31-inch bluefin tuna.Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

FISHING: Fair
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are looking forward to the next couple of week’s fishing. The water temperatures have taken a hit lately, dropping dramatically. This has had a negative effect on the fluke and black sea bass action. However, with high temperatures forecast this week, it looks like the water temperatures should be back up where they belong. Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” fished last Friday with two anglers and found a wreck with some nice sea bass in 100-feet of water. Captain Carl says the bottom temperature must have been cold as they also picked up ling and cod. He tried fishing the Little Egg Reef on Sunday and found the bite to be slow due to the icy water. Captain John Koegler took “Star Fish” out on Monday looking for bluefin and shark. In addition to some big bluefish, he picked up both mako and brown sharks. Recent good reports of yellowfin tuna at the offshore canyons should make for some interesting trips. Captain Lindsay Fuller is bringing the “June Bug” up from Hatteras this weekend for the summer and plans to do some trolling for tuna on his way up the coast. FISHING: Great
The black sea bass season opened last Saturday, and the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association were on hand to take advantage of it.
Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Starfish” managed to find a real variety of fish for his parties over the past week.
On Saturday he had a family trip with small children. The group first caught cocktail sized blues in the Little Egg Inlet and then headed into the ocean for some big black sea bass on the Little Egg Reef. Unfortunately a large number of buoys marking commercial pots restricted where he was able to fish.
He did fish some smaller structure for a few fish and then moved further off shore to 100-feet of water. Captain Carl said the kids were most excited by the large dogfish, or “big sharks” to them. They boated over 100 sea bass, with the largest about 5-pounds. They also caught some ling and a small codfish in addition to a large blackfish.
Another day before the sea bass season opened Captain Carl had a party inside the inlet for a great bay day with lots of small bluefish and four fluke. He used # 3 Clark spoons for the blues and Gulp for the fluke.
The “Miss Beach Haven” under Captain Frank Camarda fished last weekend for black sea bass and other bottom species. Both days produced a fair bite for the sea bass although first mate Sal Rosa said the water still seems a bit cool for a good bite. Pool winner Saturday was “Black Cloud” Ted with a big sea bass.
Captain Fran Verdi had a party from Australia out on the “Dropoff” and tried the inshore wrecks first. When they could find nothing but dogfish, they made the long run to the deeper structure and found a nice pick of black sea bass. On Sunday Captain Fran ran an “open boat” trip and decided to fish a new site. That move paid off as they made one drift, set the anchor, and fished that spot all day. They had a nice mix of cod, sea bass, blackfish, conger eels, and ling.
Captain Fran also reported the sea bass and ling made for a delicious Memorial Day fish fry.

FISHING: Good
The boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been working the wrecks and reefs seeking a variety of fish as they await the May 28 start of the black sea bass season. Captain Adam Nowalsky ran a half day bachelor party recently on the “Karen Ann II.” Evan Weis set up the soiree in honor of Jared’s big day. Despite leaving the dock with a few showers, the weather and sea conditions were fine.Since the group was more interested in catching fish than taking any home, Captain Adam anchored up for a few hours in one of his blackfish hotspots. They found a good steady bite and managed to land and release over 2 dozen blackfish. The “Miss Beach Haven” sailed last Saturday under Captain Frank Camarda on a 10-hour cod fishing trip. These trips have become very popular, and several anglers were shut out as they failed to reserve their spots in time. The boat fished in two locations, catching over 30 cod in the 3-6 pound range. They also managed over 100 ling. In addition some nice black sea bass and tautog came over the rails but had to be returned as their seasons are closed. The pool winner for the trip was a cod that weighed in at almost 8-pounds.The “Miss Beach Haven” will be turning its attention to black sea bass this weekend as the season opens up on May 28.Captain Lindsay Fuller is bringing the “June Bug” back up from North Carolina this weekend for the 2011 fishing season. Captain Lindsay says he plans to make a slow trip up and do some fishing, trying to pick up some tuna and mahi-mahi.Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

FISHING: Great
The boats of the Beach Haven Charter fishing Association have found success lately with three different types of fishing. The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda had a banner day last weekend on an offshore codfish trip. The head boat made the 10-hour trip with great weather and calm seas. They fished in 110 feet of water and only had to move anchor once on the wind shift. The crew ended the trip with over 60 keeper cod up to 10-pounds plus numerous throwbacks. In addition, there was a nice mix of ling and pollack. Most of the cod were in the 5-7 pound range. High angler was Tommy Hook who managed a dozen keepers. The “Miss Beach Haven” will be making another 10-hour cod trip on May 21 when it sails at 4:40 am. and returns at 3:30 pm. The cost of the trip is $80 and is limited to 32 anglers, usually by reservation.Captain Carl Sheppard had the Stoopes’ party out last Saturday for fluke on the first day of the season. Fishing in a chilly 50-degree water, the fishing was slow until Captain Carl decided to try power trolling. This technique worked and by the end of the day they boated 12 fluke, with the largest being 25-inches. The fluke bit on everything from Gulp to live minnows with a slight preference for red lures in 6-feet of water.Captain Fran Verdi had a striper trip recently and began the day having trouble getting his clam baits to the bass due to the large smooth dogfish that kept inhaling the baits. Once the sharks moved on, they developed a very nice striper bite. They caught a total of six bass and brought three home in the cooler with the largest fish at 17-pounds. FISHING: Great
Captain Adam Nowalsky of the “Karen Ann II,” a member of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association, ended the spring blackfish season in good fashion. Captain Adam had the father and son team of Alan and Michael Preis and their group out for the closing day of the season. The group went home with their limit of blackfish with Preston boating the largest blackfish of the year so far with a 9-pound monster. The current set of regulations for black sea bass has the captains of the BHCFA gnashing their teeth over what they feel are bad decisions being made on poor scientific evidence. Two of them are participating in a scientific project to help correct this. Scientists at Rutgers University are undertaking a study of sea bass, especially the effects of sex change on sea bass and how it affects their spawning abilities. Most black sea bass first mature as females with some fish later undergoing a change to become male. It is hoped that learning more about this process will help improve our abilities to manage this species. The project is funded by NOAA’s Mid-Atlantic Research Set-Aside Program. Captains Adam Nowalsky and Frank Camarda of the “Miss Beach Haven” are participating with the project. They will be tagging and releasing sea bass this summer. Anyone catching a tagged black sea bass is eligible for a reward by calling 1-888-776-6537 and providing information on the fish. FISHING: Good
The spring blackfish season closes on May 1, and a couple of the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been catching as many of these tasty wreck dwellers as possible. Captain Adam Nowalsky on the “Karen Ann II” had a party out last weekend that was willing to brave the 33-degree temperatures that faced them at the dock. Initially the winds were howling as they cleared the inlet, but the seas calmed down, and the resulting 40-degree temperatures made fishing conditions tolerable. The ocean surface temperature was 47-degrees. Captain Adam said he was pleased with the catch, especially considering the conditions. The total catch for the 5-man crew was over 60 blackfish with a keeper ratio of about 50%. They also managed to pick up a few keeper codfish including a nice sized one by Dennis. Jack won fisherman of the day honors with his number of keeper blackfish in double digits. Captain Fran Camarda on the head boat “Miss Beach Haven” made its first trip of the spring last weekend with 15 anglers aboard. Mate Sal Rosa reports their total catch was about 20 fish mostly blackfish with 4 keeper codfish mixed in.

FISHING: Good
Mother Nature has been inflicting high winds and rain on the southern New Jersey coast recently. These conditions have slowed down the efforts of the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association but not shut them out completely. Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” has two recent trips that resulted in some decent striped bass action. Jack and Timmy sailed with Captain Fran on an “open boat” trip. They fished with fresh clams near Graveling Point, and, although it was a slow pick, each managed to boat one keeper bass. Monday saw the Russ Miserendino party on board who managed to fish in some flat calm conditions. Fishing the last 3 hours of the rising tide they had a nice pick of both short and keeper stripers. Once the tide switched to go against the wind, the bite shut down. The anglers ended with 3 keepers from 29-32 inches and 5 shorts, all under 22 inches. Captain Adam Nowalsky had a group out a week ago on the ocean for some wreck and reef action. Fishing in 44 degree water the five-man party caught about 40 total fish, 30 of which were blackfish. They ended the day with 14 keeper blackfish and another four legal sized cod. Bob had the hot hand, catching over half the keepers himself, while ex-mate Mark had a doubleheader of 5-pound blackfish. The headboat “Miss Beach Haven” has been kept at the dock by poor weather but expects to hit the blackfish grounds this weekend. Mate Sal Rosa reports he has been negotiating with Mother Nature, even promising her some fish fillets if she cooperates with some nice weather this coming weekend.
