Atlantic Ocean - October 11th, 2011
supplied by: Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association
RECORDED:    78 °   FISHING: Excellent
The Indian Summer weather last weekend in Beach Haven resulted in some outstanding catches from the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association. Leading the way was a monumental tuna trip by the “Miss Beach Haven.”            Sailing with its maximum 12 anglers, Captain Frank Camarda guided the group to a limit catch of tuna. Counting the fish caught by crew members, a total of 42 fish ended up on the boat.            The trip began with an unproductive troll before stopping and putting out some chum at nightfall. The action then began with fish biting well into the night. A significant bite started again at first light until the anglers were too tired to catch any more. Two more weekend offshore tuna trips are planned for October.             Captain Fran Verdi turned his attentions on the “Drop Off” to deep water wrecks last weekend, and the move paid off. Making just two stops, he found great “drop and reel” fishing for over 75 nice sized fish. His party quickly limited out on blackfish and caught quite a few nice triggerfish.            Captain Fran said they also reeled up quite a few keeper black sea bass in the 16-22 inch range. The sea bass had to be returned as the season is closed until November 1. He reports he is watching the water temperature for a drop to indicate the stripers will be arriving in numbers.            Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Starfish” took the Stoops family out recently on a half day trip. After picking up some cocktail blues in the inlet on the way out, he bottom fished close to the beach for great action on undersized spike weakfish. He made a move to deeper water and found plenty of croakers plus some larger weakfish.            The “Starfish” returned to port with enough fish to fill two shelves of the Stoops family freezer. Captain Carl added that he has heard of at least two reports of limited out catches on striped bass in the ocean under bunker pods.   Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 877-524-2423.

RECORDED:    62 °   FISHING: Good
Fall weather in the Beach Haven area has not been real conducive to good fishing thus far. Winds, rain, and heavy seas have forced more than one captain to either postpone trips or make adjustments. When the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been able to get fishing, though, they have found fish.            Captain John Koegler of “Pop’s Pride reports he had a “fun trip” last Saturday. After finding the artificial reef area difficult to fish due to strong winds, he moved closer to shore where he found a heavy concentration of spike weakfish close to the beach. His party had non-stop action on the weakies including several keepers among the over 80 fish they released. There were also some small bluefish mixed in with the weakfish. Captain John said he is encouraged for the future by the sheer numbers of weakfish he has observed thus far this fall.            The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda fished last week with Wayne’s group and found very good numbers of croakers and weakfish. They too released large numbers of weaks but did manage to find a nice bunch of keepers.Captain Dave Wittenborn on the “Compass Rose” reports he plans to hold off on trips for a week or so until the striped bass begin to arrive. He said he had to cancel a few trips in early September due to the weather or just slow fishing. At this point, he is excited about the upcoming striper action, especially the hot November action.Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” is also anxious for the striped bass to arrive. He is already taking some scouting trips looking for bass. He plans to fish both Little Egg and Barnegat Inlets this year and offering trolling, jigging, and white water fishing. RECORDED:    78 °   FISHING: Good
Despite the closure of the summer flounder and black sea bass seasons, the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been managing to put fish in the fish box for their anglers. The head boat “Miss Beach Haven” fished a private party last weekend and after finding very few fluke, headed in and loaded up on croakers. Mate Sal Rosa reports the big boat will be sailing three weekends in October for tuna. The trips will leave around 9am. on Saturdays and return on Sunday in mid-afternoon. The departure dates are October 8, 15, and 28, and the trips are limited to just 12 anglers.            Captain George Finck had the “Sparetime” out on a trolling trip to the canyons last weekend. He had two yellowfin tuna in the boat by 7 am. The final count for the trip was seven tuna and four mahi-mahi. They also released a white marlin. The trip went well on nice seas despite some foreboding weather reports.            Captain John Koegler on the “Pop’s Pride” had a charter last Saturday and decided to fish in the bay due to the high seas in the ocean. The move paid out as they caught over 60 blowfish along with a 15-ounce kingfish, just shy of qualifying for a state “skillful angler award.” They also caught bluefish of all sizes.            The anglers kept only the 16 largest blowfish along with some bluefish they trolled up from the inlet area. The blowfish were all over 16 inches in length. Captain John said it was the best blowfish action he has had in several years.            Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Starfish” had a local Boy Scout troop out on Sunday, and they fished several miles outside the inlet. They caught lots of fish with enough keeper weakfish and bluefish for a good catch.            Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” reports he is wreck fishing for another couple of weeks before he turns his attention to striped bass. With the positive reports he has heard north of Beach Haven, he expects them to be arriving shortly. Atlantic Ocean - September 20th, 2011

RECORDED:    67 °   FISHING: Good
A sudden dip in temperatures and some days of strong winds have made fishing more difficult for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association, but certainly not impossible.            Between tropical storms and a series of northeasters, there have been large waves to fight on the ocean and much higher than normal tides in the bay waters inside Long Beach Island.            The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captains Brant Whittaker and Frank Camarda and fought the 4-6 foot waves last weekend for a steady day of action for its anglers. Mate Sal Rosa reports the action was constant on sea bass, weakfish, snapper blues, and a few fluke. Although most of the fish had to be returned as they were either out of season or too short, the anglers who made the trip enjoyed the constant action. The “Miss Beach Haven” will be out again this weekend trying to end the fluke season on an upnote.            Captain Lindsay Fuller on the “June Bug” had an offshore trolling trip over the weekend to the canyons and managed to put two yellowfin tuna in the box. The trip was originally slated to be an overnight combination chunking and trolling trip, but the fierce sea conditions nixed that plan.            Choosing a window in the bad weather, Captain Lindsay made the trip hoping to get in on some of the hot tuna and wahoo action that had been around earlier in the week. The rough seas made fishing difficult and resulted in only the two tuna and one false albacore being reeled in. Atlantic Ocean - September 13th, 2011

RECORDED:    78 °   FISHING: Fair
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are working hard to find fish. With the black sea bass season having closed on Sunday until November 1, they are finding one less species to target.

Everyone continues to look for fluke, but that species has been playing hide and seek with everyone. The various storms recently have chased practically all of the fluke into the ocean, but they do not seem to be biting at any of the customary spots. There has been some chatter of fluke in the deeper water areas, 85-feet plus, but even there fish are scarce.

Captain Fran Verdi of the “Dropoff” says he will be targeting fluke until September 25 as well as hitting some of the deeper water wrecks that are holding blackfish, porgies, cod, and ling. He plans to start striped bass trips in mid October.

There are small bluefish around close to the beach, in the inlet, and even smaller ones in the bay waters. Anglers looking for fluke in the deeper water have reported some very big croakers on the bottom that are very hungry.

Offshore reports have been scarce thanks to the rough waters recently. Boats that did make it to the canyons have reported a good showing of white marlin along with some decent catches of yellowfin tuna.

Atlantic Ocean - September 6th, 2011
supplied by: Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association
RECORDED:    63 °   FISHING: Poor
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are looking forward to an improvement in the weather as well as the fishing action.

Hurricane Irene churned up area waters and pushed most of the summer flounder out of the bays into the ocean. She must also have done something to the fluke’s appetites as local captains had difficulty finding much in the way of concentrations of fish.

Some boats reported some decent black sea bass action, especially on some of the less fished wrecks. The sea bass season stops as of September 11, however, and does not return until November 1.

Just as the waters started to settle from Irene, and the bay water color went back from brown to a more natural grayish-green, Hurricane Lee decided to show up and make an impression.

Weather reports indicate that the Beach Haven area will experience northeast winds along with rain and some thunderstorms right up to the weekend. The captains are hoping that this weekend will see a return to some decent action on the fluke.

The offshore bite for tuna and mahi-mahi was strong after Irene, and if the weather conditions permit trips to the canyons, that should be a good option.

Atlantic Ocean - August 30th, 2011

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter breathed a collective sigh of relief when Hurricane Irene spared the Beach Haven area from any severe damage. Despite the storm not being quite as destructive as billed, the captains did not regret any of the pre-storm preparations that helped to keep their boats and equipment safe.            Those with smaller boats pulled them out of the water and stored them safely on land for the weekend. The larger boats were tucked away in safe harbors with extra lines in place and a myriad of tasks taken care of.            The question now is just what kind of effect Irene will have on the fishing. Just prior to the storm, Captain Tim Knorr had his boat the “William Knorr” out on four inshore trips and reported a definite improvement in the number and size of the sea bass being caught. He fished the Garden State Reef, the inlet, and the Barnegat Reef where he managed to boat some nice fluke to 24-inches in addition to some nice sea bass.            Anglers wishing to catch sea bass are reminded that the season will close after September 11 until it re-opens November 1. The summer flounder season will close for the year on September 25.            Although the storm did muddy the bay waters quite a bit, some captains believe the storm will be a benefit to ocean fishing. The green algae bloom that had been just off the beaches should be dissipated now and the upheaval of water will help add oxygen.Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

Atlantic Ocean - August 24th, 2011

RECORDED:    81 °   FISHING: Good
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are keeping wary eyes on the progress of Hurricane Irene. Even though all are hoping that Beach Haven avoids a direct hit, it is a sure bet that fishing will be disrupted for a few days. Recent fishing trips have found keeper fluke a bit difficult to locate. Most of the fluke have either left the bay waters or are massed together close to and in the inlet. The action at the Little Egg Reef has slowed, but captains are finding some larger fish at the Garden State South Reef and at some wrecks even farther out. Some of these deeper waters are giving up some cold water fish such as cod and ling along with some blackfish. Captain George Finck of “Sparetime Charters” had a bachelor party out recently for a day of fishing and fun. Scott Wenelast and friends treated Erik Leamin to a good day on the water with a decent catch of fluke and sea bass. Closer to the beach there are good numbers of cocktail blues that are being caught on the troll and by casting into diving birds. Croakers have also shown up in 35-feet of water just outside the inlet. The canyons have been very productive the past week or so with some very nice catches of yellowfin and bigeye tuna along with good action on billfish and mahi. Once Irene leaves the area by the beginning of next week, this fishing should only get better. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

Atlantic Ocean - August 17th, 2011

RECORDED:    84 °   FISHING: Great
Some of the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have turned to “open boat” trips to fill out their fishing schedules. With economics and time constraints being a concern for many anglers, especially those in the southern Ocean County area on vacation, the ability to fish on a quality and pay only per angler is an attractive option.Captains Dave Wittenborn on the “Compass Rose” and Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” have learned the open boat trips have provided fishing opportunities for many anglers that might otherwise have been left at the shore. Last weekend Captain Wittenborn had an “open boat” trip of 6 anglers out for a day of fluke fishing on the Garden State South Reef. After an early morning spurt of a pair of 4-pounders, the boat settled down to a steady pick of throwback fish marked with occasional keepers. This day’s trip included anglers from Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Fishing with white Gulp and live minnow combination baits, the trip ended with a half a dozen nice fluke in the fish box. Captain Adam Nowalsky on the” Karen Ann II” had the M&L Marine Service group out recently for a charter on a day with a stiff southerly wind with 4-foot seas. Despite unpleasant conditions, the party wanted to fish and found fish on just about every drift of the day. They finished the day with 5 nice fluke to take home along with a big eel. They also picked up some 1-pound bluefish caught on the troll on the way in.

Atlantic Ocean - August 10th, 2011

RECORDED:    84 °   FISHING: Great
The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are finding the fluke fishing is showing a definite upswing as August moves on. With the season extended into late September this year, they expect the ocean fluking to be fun for all involved.

The “Miss Beach Haven” and Captain Frank Camarda reports decent fishing over the past week with the ocean water temperature at 74-degrees. On their bay trips they found decent action with “tons of shorts as well as keepers caught.” In the ocean the improved fishing resulted in quite a few fluke over 3-pounds. Pool winner on Saturday was Pete from Beach Haven with a 4.5-pound fluke. Art Wolf of Holgate had four nice fluke keepers and several sea bass.

Captain Dave Wittenborn of the “Compass Rose” reports the mid 70’s water temperature has finally gotten his ocean fluking action underway. Late summer and early fall are his favorite time of the year to fish as the fluke are moving out of the bays and onto the ocean lumps. Last weekend he had a steady pick of fluke and sea bass around the artificial reefs. Now that the sea bass spawning season is pretty much ended, he expects that action to take off. Once September arrives, he expects to leave the reefs for the lumps in 30-50 feet of water for some real nice action.

Captain Adam Nowalsky of the “Karen Ann II” had the Holman Ford group out recently on a day with less than 1-foot seas. He found a pick of fluke, with his anglers putting 10 keepers in the box. Ron boated a 6-pound, 6-ounce fish while Greg took honors with a 6-pound, 12-ounce doormat.
