Beaverhead River - June 24th, 2004
supplied by: The Stonefly Inn
FISHING: Good
The stonefly saga continues..... first of all, I apologize for the lack of reports since earlier this month. My office time has been greatly reduced by the number of fishermen visiting this valley. Top that off with the fact that I am much better at sitting on the deck with a cold one than working with my computer and you have a recipe for late evening cocktails, and out of date fishing reports. Enough about my life though - and on to the fishing. At this point, it doesnt really matter wich launch you use on any of our local rivers - you will see bugs of some sort, and catch fish with a variety of techniques. The Big Hole is dropping and running clear, the Beaverhead is producing its normal oversized, size 20 pmd eating browns, and the Madison is covered up with salmonflies. The big bugs are out, and although the fish seem a bit gorged with the nymphs they are definately starting to look up for a floating meal. You will find that the dead drifted fly may not produce as well as say, one that is twiched and stripped. Drag free is definately not an issue over there. The next two weeks should be stellar fishing over on the Maddy as the adults start hatching and coming back to the water to drop eggs. As of today, there are bugs from Story ditch down to Ennis. On the Big Hole, there are yellow sallies, pmd's, green drakes and a few caddis fluttering around - it seems the fish flat dont care at times what you throw at them.

Beaverhead River - June 12th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
The Flows at Barrett's Diversion Dam are up to 501 C.F.S. The river is clean from The dam dowstream for about a mile to the High Bridge. The small creek, which I believe is called Clark Creek, which empties into the Beavehead just downstream of the High Bridge is running dirty and making the fishing below there tough. The angler pressure over the weekend will all be condensed into this short stretch of river so if may be a little crowded on the river. The nymph fishing has been good with small scuds, sowbugs and small mayfly nymphs. Don't forget to try a san juan worm or a streamer if it is cloudy out.
Fly Pattern Suggestions :Red San Juan Worms, Red Sawyer PT #18-20, Grey Scud #14-16, Olive Scud #14-16, Red Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Hares Ear #16-18, Green Weenie #18-20.

Beaverhead River - June 9th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
The Flows at Barrett's Diversion Dam are up to 451 C.F.S. The flows are up from the need for irrigation downstream and this is a great time to fish the Beaverhead. The high flows have moved some of the fish around and they have been feeding more actively due to more food being pushed their way. Nymphing is still the most productive fishing right now. If you are going to fish the tailrace area concentrate on midges and scuds fished on long leaders. If you fish the river below the high bridge you can fish larger flies and get away with heavier tippets.
Fly Pattern Suggestions :Red San Juan Worms, Red Sawyer PT #18-20, Grey Scud #14-16, Olive Scud #14-16, Red Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Hares Ear #16-18, Green Weenie #18-20.

Beaverhead River - May 29th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Good
The Flows at Barrett's Diversion Dam are 135 C.F.S. The river is extremely low which makes the fish an easy target. The low water can make them a bit more leary of the anglers. The oppening weekend went off pretty well and the crowds have slowed a bit. This weekend will probably see a good number of anglers as there is an extra day off for those traveling from farther away. Nymphing is the the main game on the Beaverhead right now. Streamers have also been taking some fish, especially in the stretch above the high bridge.
Fly Pattern Suggestions :Red San Juan Worms, Red Sawyer PT #18-20, Grey Scud #14-16, Olive Scud #14-16, Red Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Midge Larvae #18-22, Olive Hares Ear #16-18, Green Weenie #18-20.

Beaverhead River - October 20th, 2003
supplied by: Great Yellowstone Flyfishers
FISHING: Fair
The Beaverhead is closed from Clark Canyon Dam to the Selway Bridge right now until November 30 to protect the spawning browns in low water. There are much better places to fish right now so I wouldnt waste any time on the Beaverhead right now.
