Bighorn River - February 1st, 2013
supplied by: Wild Fly Angler
RECORDED:    40 °   FISHING: Good
Fishing on the Horn continues to be solid. A spey casting session below Afterbay turned out to be just that- a spey casting session. Despite throwing some a variety of streamers on a RIO Flight Skagit with a T-11 tip in the deep slow holes, nobody seemed very interested streamers. Moving down river to 3 Mile Access a standard nymph rig found fish. Best flies were a natural sow bug, without any flash or hot thread and brown and black midge larvae fished deep. A few midges here and there with sporadic rising fish- nothing to get too jazzed up about. The 3 Mile ramp was being plowed yesterday at 4:30, the ramp at Afterbay is clear. Should be a great weekend weather wise! Have fun out there...

Wow, the weather sure was nice this weekend! Yup, any fishing report that starts out with commentary on the weather is probably a bad sign. A Bighorn to Mallard's float resulted in some slow fishing. There were a few grabs at streamers, but nothing really consistent. We even nymphed bugs- the usual suspects, midges, sows, baetis- but again, nothing produced consistently. We did see quite a few dead post-spawn browns and quite a few "zombie" fish with some wierd skin problems that were dying. Reports from the upper river were the same- pretty slow. Looks like cooler temps this week and then maybe warming back up into the 40's and maybe touching 50 for the weekend! Check the wind forecast before heading out!

*Important Note* The Billings airport will be closed to weekend flights between the 4th of July, and Labor Day, 2013.  People who need to to fly in or out of the area on the weekends are encouraged to think about extending stays, or possibly redirecting to Bozeman, MT, or Cody, WY.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Bighorn River - January 21st, 2013

RECORDED:    38 °   FISHING: Good
Fishing continues to be good. It's not on fire, but they are still eating and willing to move a bit for a bite. Water temps at 3 mile clocked in at 41 degrees today. Most of the browns have moved off the redds and seem to be done with the spawn. Midge activity is still pretty minimal. Deep drifting a midge larvae today turned up a few fish, but sowbugs still seem to be outproducing most other patterns. Interestingly, a pink softhackle sow outfished a firebead sow by a long margin today- different day, they wanted a different bug- as they say, that's fishing.

RECORDED:    35 °   FISHING: Great
Fishing on the Bighorn continues to be very good. For the nymph set, soft hackle sows with a bright beads have been taking plenty of fish. High sticking for rainbows below the drop offs of the gravel bars has been effective. Streamer fishing has been good on the right days- we had a guy report that he did really well on a white bunny fur pattern with a bright pink bead head and flourescent pink legs- that was actually tied as an Alaska pattern- you never know! For the dry fly set- midge activity has been sporatic and sparse with a few surface feeders here and there- nothing to get too jazzed up about yet. As always- have fun out there!

Fished Bighorn to Mallard's. Streamer fishing was a bit slower than we thought it would be but we did catch fish on Bow River Buggers. The nymphing was pretty good with fish being caught on Tungsten Surveyors, Black Bead Wing Midges and Grey Rays. Fish were also rising to midges and Beatis.

O.K., I'm not very good at keeping up on these, but please feel free to give me a call if you have a question.

I'm on the Bighorn until I'll hit the Missouri in late September/October, then back to the Bighorn.

I've been fishing the lower river a lot (as usual), and have been getting a little bit of trico fishing in the mornings.  Later in the day, it seems like I can get fish to eat a hopper drifting from hole to hole, then the PMD's come off.  That pretty much sums up my typical sunny day, but if we get a little bit of cloud cover, then the streamer rods come out.  It's been very good, with fish on the move.  There are lots of little trout out there, and lots of predator fish looking for them.

By all accounts, the upper river PMD hatch has been as good as anyone can remember.  All in all, some pretty good fishing to be had.

Hey David, hope the Yellowstone treated you well!

Tight Lines,

Jeremy

Playing a little catch up on the Spring, as I've gotten way behind on fishing reports.  I can, obviously report that I've been very busy, and have enjoyed a full calendar in the early season.

The flow is just under 1,800 cfs, and looks to be staying right there.  The lake is a little under 5 feet short of full, but the inflows now match the outflows, so it looks like there's no freak storm coming to push the flows up for a little while.  The low flows have made nymphing difficult, as the free floating moss is a constant issue, but we seem to be turning the corner there, and things are starting to clear up.

Most folks have been sticking to the upper river for less moss, and have had a long baetis hatch that has dictated most of the fly selection, and timing of the bite.

We seem to be transitioning now into more PMD's coming off, and Yellow Sally's to follow.  I've also had some Mother's Day Caddis fishing on the lower, from time to time.  Look for these to become more relevent on the upper.

I've just gotten back from another successful trip up to the Missouri, and will be on the Bighorn for a while, so look for my Missouri River report next.

Tight Lines,

Jeremy

RECORDED:    60 °   FISHING: Excellent
O.K., I've been very busy, and am going to be on the water 19 of the next 20, so I thought I'd better get caught up.

Fishing's been a blast.  If you like dry fly fishing, and long for the old days of the Bighorn, you should give it another try.  Midge fishing is as good as it's been in a long time, and there are young Brown Trout in the river that just love to rise.  You may have to hunt for a bigger fish, but they're in there, too.

Nymphing has been O.K., and I would categorize the streamer fishing as O.K., as well.  When I pump fish, I'm finding very few scuds and sowbugs (although the patterns still work), it's been almost all midge larva, and pupae of every color.

We did a Spring flush earlier in the week, but the river is returning to 2,500 cfs by today.  The feeder creeks are running pretty clean, so the lower sections are fishable, as well.

I expect this report to be pretty consistent, until the Baetis start to pop consistently, which is usually in a couple of weeks, so keep that in mind.

Tight Lines,

Jeremy

Bighorn River - March 22nd, 2012
supplied by: Montana Fly Fishing Expeditions
RECORDED:    72 °   FISHING: Excellent
The Big Horn River fished very well over the past few days with sunny skies and calm wind. Montana Flyfishing Expeditions spent our days on the lower river fishing both dries and streamers and both were very successful.  Numbers and quality of fish were good and crowds were minimal making the entire experience on the Big Horn awesome for Montana spring fishing!
