Blackfoot River - June 12th, 2012
supplied by: Big R Fly Shop
RECORDED:
70 °
FISHING: Great
Been dropping really hard over the past few days and has finally turned that green color that everyone loves to see. There are a few salmonflies kickin around in the canyon as well as drakes on overcast days. The streamer fishing has been off the charts with the increase in clarity. Slow presentations are key on this river. Find slower moving water and dredge it with bigger sculpin imitations. Anything that moves a lot of water will turn a considerable amount of fish. The bigger the better right now. Now is the time to boat the fish of the season on this river. Look for the emergence of salmonflies to only get better throughout the week. Prospecting with higher riding dries with a worm off the back is a good idea for those who want to get their salmonfly fix. The flows are still high so be careful on the oars.
Nymphs: Pats rl, rock n' rolliln stones, jimmy legs, davies explsion stones, 20"ers, SJW, princes, copper johns
Dries: Wike's big-r bug, M's stone, carnage stones, chubby chernobyls, bigger PMX's, purple hazes
Streamers: Sex dungeons, peanut envies, big gulp sculpins, MT mouthwashes, BJ minnows, tarpon toads (yes they work for trout)

Blackfoot River - September 29th, 2010

FISHING: Great
Fishing continues to be pretty solid considering the indian summer we're currently experiencing over here. Chernobyl style attractors and mid-sized tarantulas have the goods on top (along with the purple haze...duh), but you're gonna be playin with a lot of small to mid-sized fish. If you're looking for quality over quanity, go subsurface with bunny style streamers in olive, tan, and black. October caddis have been out as well. Skating a #10 or 12 orange stimi chew toy across the thigh deep rips will get you some very aggressive strikes. Standard bfoot nymphs such as red copper johns, bh princes, red sjw, and smaller sized pt's will keep you into fish throughout periods of high sun (but you'll be playin a lot with whities and squaws...rocky mountain bones and snooks if you will). Look for baetis on days of clouds, which are few and far between right now.

Blackfoot River - July 2nd, 2010
supplied by: Big R Fly Shop
RECORDED:
68 °
FISHING: Good
Fished Harry Morgan to County Line (Russel Gates) on Friday. Fishing was somewhat above average considering the clarity of the water. The NF of the Blackfoot is gin clear and the MF had zero clarity whatsoever. Nymphs worked, moved a few fish to the top, but overall streamers were the best. We caught the majority of our fish on black, but had some luck contrasting it with white. There were no more salmonflies out, but we did see a few golden stones, some green drakes, pmds, yellow sallies, and lots of caddis towards the evening. I'm sure that section of water has cleared by now and dries should be the ticket. If you do head over here, check the flow charts. If they're moving up or cresting, choose a section of water on the lower river. The closer you get to Missoula, the cleaner the water is.
Suggested patterns: Big R bugs golden, carnage stones golden, Kyle's king kong hopper (trim the red legs off the back and it turns into a killer golden stone pattern), madam x's, pmx's, elk hair caddis, sparkle pupas, purple haze, SJW, princes, copper john's, yuk bugs, JJ's, sparkle minnows, skiddish smolts, what ever else big and horrific your streamer box may have in it

Blackfoot River - March 14th, 2010

FISHING: Good
Floated Cable Car to Waystation yesterday. The water temp. is still very cold (was around 37 at 2pm) up here. We fished the river with one intention and that was to bring the biggest fish possible to the boat. I had two bull trout that were 24"+ boil on a woolhead and one other brown that was 20"+ swat at my streamer. Total, we landed four bull trout, two browns, and two cutties, all on slow moving streamers. We could of easily had a 20+ fish day if we nymphed the winter holding buckets. This river is on the verge of becoming very good. Give it a week or two of warmer nighttime temps. and it will be fishing big.
Suggested patterns:
Streamers: natural colored buggers, sculpzilla white, JJ's, white zonkers, flank heads
Nymphs: princes, pts, copper johns, the worm, pats, db stones, yuk bugs
Dries: not happinin

Blackfoot River - October 31st, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
Water Levels (click here) The Blackfoot is almost exclusively a subsurface deal now. While there are still some fish looking up in the heat of the day, the window for dries has been about an hour at most. Double nymph rigs with large cased caddis/san juan worm dropper, olive Whitlock sculpins, black woolheads and buggers worked along the banks and in all the mid to shallow pocket water is still your best bet. Look for the streamer action to fade HARD by mid November. It'll be a good nymping option until the shelf ice makes wading an extreme sport. HATCHES: Baetis and midges. FLIES: P-tail and san juan worm nymph rigs. Olive, peach and brown bunny junk. Smaller royal wulffs with tiny mayfly droppers. WEATHER: Today: Isolated rain showers early in the morning...then rain showers likely. Highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Southwest winds to 15 mph. Tonight: Rain showers likely. Lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s. Southwest winds to 15 mph. Tuesday: Slight chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s. South winds to 15 mph. Tuesday night: Chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Lows in the 30s to lower 40s. Breezy with south winds 15 to 25 mph. Wednesday: Rain showers likely. Highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Southwest winds to 15 mph.

Blackfoot River - October 26th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
Water Levels (click here) The cloud cover today should produce a bit more consistency with the darker colored streamers and nymph rigs. There will be some sections that'll fish ok with dries, but the effective window will be only about 2 hours long, heat of the day. Olive Whitlock sculpins and black woolheads and buggers worked along the banks and in all the mid to shallow pocket water will be a good tactic today. Look for the afternoon wind to be an issue on the lower river especially. If you float this river, you might want to plan on being off by about 2. HATCHES: Mahoganies, baetis, some October caddis. FLIES: P-tail and san juan worm nymph rigs. Olive, peach and brown bunny junk. Smaller royal wulffs with tiny mayfly droppers. WEATHER: Today: Isolated rain showers in the morning...then scattered rain showers in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s. West winds to 15 mph. Tonight: Rain showers likely. Lows in the 30s to lower 40s. Thursday: Chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the 50s to lower 60s. Thursday night: Chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Friday: Chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the 50s. Southwest winds to 15 mph in the afternoon. Friday night: Chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Saturday: Slight chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s.

Blackfoot River - October 19th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
Water Levels (click here) If the sun stays out, you should have good dryfly action on oversized mayfly patterns and smaller terrestrial/attractor stuff. Yesterday a #12 royal wulff with a #18 beerhead emerger was very effective. We also turned some nice fish on a #12 Dave's Hopper. If the clouds move in today, look for darker colored streamers to a happy deal. The wind could majorly suck on the lower sections by mid afternoon. Then again, it cold be dead calm or snowing, who knows! HATCHES: Mahoganies, baetis, some October caddis. FLIES: P-tail and san juan worm nymph rigs. Olive, peach and brown bunny junk. Smaller royal wulffs with tiny mayfly droppers. WEATHER: Today: Scattered rain showers in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. West winds 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Scattered rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Thursday: Chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s. Thursday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Friday: Patchy fog in the morning. Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s.

Blackfoot River - October 13th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
Water Levels (click here) The dryfly fishing is giving way to better nymphing and streamer action. There is still a small window in the middle of the day, from about 1 to 2:30, when you can regularly move fish to the surface. Other than that, you'll be much better off with tandem nymph rigs that include BIG prince nymphs, san juan worms, etc... Deep and slow moving streamers are also going to move some very nice fish for you if you fish them consistently and with confidence all day long. Darker colors will work the best for you in the clouds. HATCHES: Mahoganies, baetis, some October caddis. FLIES: P-tail and san juan worm nymph rigs. Olive, peach and brown bunny junk. Smaller royal wulffs with tiny mayfly droppers. WEATHER: Today: Isolated rain showers. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Southwest winds around 15 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows in the 30s. Friday: Patchy fog in the morning. Mostly cloudy in the morning then clearing. Highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. South winds around 15 mph in the afternoon. Friday night: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s. Saturday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Saturday night: Mostly clear. Lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Sunday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s.

Blackfoot River - October 4th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
Water Levels (click here) It's mostly a subsurface deal up here right now, but you can pick off a few fish here and there on top. Slow moving streamers in peach, olive, black and natural have all been giving up some really nice sized fish recently. Tandem nymph rigs that include big squirrel tails and red San Juan worms have also been doing the deed. If you're prospecting with dries in the clouds, a size 14 royal wulff with a SHALLOW dropper of a #18 p-tail or similar offering should do the job for you. While you won't see NEARLY the number of rising fish on this river that you will almost anywhere else you go, the fishing should still be pretty good up here. HATCHES: Mahoganies, baetis, some October caddis. FLIES: P-tail and san juan worm nymph rigs. Olive, peach and brown bunny junk. Smaller royal wulffs with tiny mayfly droppers. WEATHER: Tuesday: Rain and snow showers likely in the morning...then chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Little or no snow accumulation expected. Highs in the 50s. Tuesday night: Slight chance of rain and snow showers in the evening. Mostly cloudy in the evening then becoming partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Wednesday: Mostly sunny in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Wednesday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Thursday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the 60s. Thursday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This river will fish well right through October.
