Calawah River - January 27th, 2012
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
34 °
FISHING: Excellent
The Calawah River is in good shape running at 2300cfs with 4ft of vis and dropping.
The Calawah has a good amount of hatchery fish with a fair amount of wild fish.
With the river running high the best techniques will be pulling plugs or side drifting.
If pulling plugs stick with T-4 Flatfish in silver, silver/red, flame red, grenn hornet, clair'a'belle, casper or flounder.
For the side drifter stick with 2 #2 vision hooks and a #8 corkie in flame red, chart/red, rainbow or chart/green dot. For bait fish eggs cured in Pink Borax-0-fire or Borax-o-fire cured prawns.
If looking for hatchery fish stay around the hatchery area, and for wild fish I would fish higher in the system. Remember that above the 101 bridge it is selective gear rules which means no bait and sinlge barbless hooks and no retenion of wild fish.
This will get better as the water continues to drop.

FISHING: Excellent
The Calawah is in good shape running at 883cfs with 7ft of vis and dropping.
Wild steelhead have moved in and spread out from the top of the river all the way down to the mouth.
The best techniques in this low water will be float fishing. I have had the best luck lately with Baeu-mac or Aero jigs in pink, pink/white, cerise, peach/pink, pink/purple and the nightmare jig.
Have also had good luck fishing fishng bait under the float. Stick with eggs cured in Pautzke Borax-o-fire in light pink or natural orange.
Wild fish numbers will continue to build over the next several weeks.

Calawah River - January 12th, 2011
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
46 °
FISHING: Poor
The Calawah is in good shape running at 4350cfs with 0ft of vis and rising.
Best fishing is right around the hatchery creeks. The best technique has been float fishing with either Aero Jigs in cerise, pink, pink/white, pink, peach or nightmare. Float fishing bait has been great. Stick with a 1/8oz cheater bait weight in flame, chart/flame, orange red scale and pink pearl. I have been using coastal cured eggs or 321 eggs in a slight pink color.
Wild fish starting to show in a few more numbers and will more each day. If looking for wild fish then concentrate your efforts a little higher up in the system.
Hatchery steelhead will still be good for a couple of more weeks and then the wild fish will take over.
