The springer season is starting to wind down on the lower Clearwater and Snake Rivers, there are still some fish moving but the best fishing is now on the upper Clearwater, Snake and Salmon Rivers-this fishery will hold up for several weeks. Methods include fishing K-fish (sardine wrap) while anchored or backtrolled, fishing roe behind a diver or drifting and back bouncing if water conditions allow, as well as fishing helmeted or plug cut herring. The South Fork of the Clearwater is a bank fishing game with spinners and roe being the best and most popular methods.

SPRING CHINOOK- The Springers have finally started into the system with some strong numbers-the last few days at Bonneville Dam have been in the 3000+ range and the counts should increase significantly in the next few days. This translates into some good fishing in our area from around the middle of the first week in May on. The season openers have been set for April 24th on the Clearwater and the Snake with closing dates as late as August 1st. Feel free to contact us for the latest info on the fishery (even if you intend to fish on your own) or to reserve a date while we still have a few openings. You can email (plong@clarkston.com) or phone 1-509-751-0410-we'll be happy to help.

STEELHEAD-   We are no longer booking steelhead trips for the 2004 Spring season. The fishing is past prime and water conditions are too variable to count on for the remainder of the season. We will begin our fall season in early August-please reserve your dates early as we are already booking peak season dates.

SPRING CHINOOK- Our 2004 Spring Chinook season is just a few weeks away and it looks like it will be a near record run again. The peak period will be quite short (usually 2 to 3 weeks) and these dates are filling in fast-contact us soon to reserve a day during the prime period.

STURGEON- Sturgeon fishing is beginning to pick up and with a few more days of warm weather we should start seeing some good activity. Water temps are rising and a couple more degrees should get us going. Smallmouth Bass- There are a few bass starting to stir around and as with the sturgeon, just a slight rise in water temps and we will start seeing some decent fishing.

I guess you could say we are officially between seasons at this time-as  far as we are concerned the steelheading is done and it will be a while  before the warm water fish really start doing much.

On the steelhead subject, there are still fish in the system, the upper section of the  Clearwater including the North Fork at Orofino, the main stem above  Orofino and the major tribs (S. Fork etc.) will continue to produce fish  for some time while the section from Lewiston to Orofino will be hit and miss for the remainder of the season-please caution folks on handling  these fish (especially the wild fish), they are taxed from many months in the fresh water and a pretty fragile resource at this stage in the game.

There are a few smallmouth starting to stir around so it won't be long  until we see some good activity on these little scrappers. The sturgeon  bite is also picking up, a little more runoff and this fishery will kick  up several notches.

The only other news is the upcoming springer season, this is a grey area  for the time being but it is almost certain we will have a good season on the Clearwater-regs for the Snake are considerably more complex and we will not know if a season will be authorized on the Snake for some time.

We have had a moderate blowout for the past few days but the Clearwater is shaping up again at this time. Prior to this the fish were beginning to leave the reservoir and enter the main river-the fish have been on a strong bite and all have been large B-run fish. The ratio of clipped to unclipped has been running around 60 percent unclipped fish (keepers). This latest flush of water will probably bring the majority of the fish from the Lower Granite Pool into the river and we expect to see some very good fishing for awhile. We are soon going to see the end of this run as the fish move to the terminal areas and also begin to feel the strain of many months in fresh water. The next few weeks should provide some good fishing but beyond that it will start getting pretty shaky.
