Cowlitz River - September 4th, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:    73 °   FISHING: Good
The cowlitz is the perfect height for this time of year.

Summer Steelhead are spread out through river. Meduim sized flies have been working well in the bigger riffels early and late in the day. Use bright colored flies in low light and dark flies in brighter light.

For the gear fisherman side drifting small eggs clusters or prawns have been good. As the fish go off the bite switch over to plugs like a michael jackson, flame red, purple gizmo or black herring bone x-4's eem to do the trick. The pressure on Steelhead is slowing down as people are switching over to salmon.

Salmon have started to enter the lower river. Fish with a Sardine wrapped Kwikfish or Cutplug Herring on a diver. Dont be afraid to go down to small plugs in salmon colors for these kings in the low water,

Fishing will continue to pick up as fish keep filling up in to the river.

Cowlitz River - April 2nd, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Excellent
The River is running at the perfect winter level. The late run of Hatchery fish have shown up in big numbers.  Side Drifting eggs has been the number one technique. Stick with Red eggs and double #4 hooks with a cheater in the middle. The cheaters used are Red, Red/Chatruese, Lime Green, Pink/Red Dotand my Favorite Rainbow.

Fish the wall below Blue creek in the morning for the first couple of hours and then slowly move down fishing all the way to Toledo. We starting to see the first of the summer runs.

Spring Chinook

Spring Chinook are showing up in good numbers. Early Season springer's in the cowlitz like to eat Herring very well. I will usually fish two Herring off the back two rods and then fish two T-4 flatfish off the two front rods and then a Toman Spinner on a dropper off my rod. The setup acounts for alot early season limits. As the season progress I will slowly try eggs or prawns until that bite takes over.

Cowlitz River - October 19th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    60 °   FISHING: Great
The Cowlitz is the river of choice for sea-runs right now.  The fishing has been good and the fish have been averaging 10"-14".  Reverse spiders, rolled muddlers, October Caddis dries and some baetis patterns have been producing fish.

Preferable techniques would be to swing a fly, steelhead style punctuated with little strips.  The other technique would be to cast to the bank and strip fairly quickly to draw strikes.

As the water cools, look for fish to hold a little deeper.  The use of a fast sink poly leader will put the fly in the right zone to keep fish chasing your fly.
