Deschutes River - Lower - July 26th, 2012
supplied by: Deschutes River Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Hot and still and tons of caddis everywhere yesterday.  Look in shade pockets and eddies for working fish. The best fish are deep and not always gimme mes. It is getting later in the season and from salmon fly to caddis a lot of the easy targets have been there done that. The most receptive fish are the ones that are not getting pounded. Those are tougher fish (casting, stealth, etc) but worth the effort. Primo spot and stalk. Nymphing has been fair to Ok and the evenings have been good. Boat traffic moderate to light. Great time to be on the water.

Still a good month left of great camping, floating and fishing. Not too late for a multi-day trout trip.

Had some reports of some steel caught down low. It is getting to be that time.  Will be heading down on a recon play trip in a week. Will have a fresh first hand report then. Slots open for early steel low (August and September).  October is limited availability. November we have a  few slots. Time to make plans for steelhead season.

Trout:
Caddis are out in full force on the warmer days and we have experienced some great fishing of late. Look for subtle rises along the banks, in the foam lines and back eddies, and in the riffles. Rising fish can be found all day but best dry fly fishing has been early and late.

Have a variety of caddis patterns on hand including some soft hackles. A dry-dropper combination can work well with some type of soft hackle or pupae pattern as a dropper. Some of my favorite flies this time of year are Tan and Green X-Caddis, X-2 Caddis, and Sparkle Pupa's in sizes 16-18.

Nymphing is productive during the day as well. Make sure you are on the bottom when nymphing. Caddis Pupa's in green and tan and variety of other small nymphs work this time of year.

Steelhead:

Steelhead are at the mouth and being caught in the first 8 miles of the river. Look for August to be good below Macks Canyon. To early to tell how good the run is going to be, but early reports look promising!

Early mornings and late evenings have proven to be the best catching times, with some mid-afternoon glory on nymphs and possible eddy line sippers.

Look for caddis, more PMD's and some good pale evening dun hatches right at dusk.

Small nymphs fished tandem with a couple of BB shot is a good set up. Czech style nymphing the riffles is good now.

Steelhead fishing is still pretty slow. Some have been caught, and you know, that is reason to go see if you might be the next guy to hook up with one?!?!? I do expect the river to improve with the planned release of colder water on August 1st from the dam as that will pull some steelhead in from the Columbia.

Now this feels like July. Hot amazing summer weather. River has been failry mellow with traffic and there are tons of caddis. Summer troutin on the Deschutes. It has been pretty good dry fly conditions and as expected, pretty good fishing. Fill the boxes with caddis dry patterns and start snooping along the banks looking for sippers. It has been good.

Whoa, summer showed up, it's HOT! Is there a better place to be in the heat than wet wading up a bank checking the shady caddis choked pockets for sippers? Nope. Well the caddis numbers are good. Weather is awesome and fishing is pretty decent. I'd get in on it if dry flies and summer trout fun turns your crank.  Pack the boxes with E/C caddis, X-caddis ( sizes 16, 18) maybe some Elk hairs or any pattern that Silvey ties and start hunting. If things slow or nymphing is your thang, try Pheasant tails, Copper Johns, Sparkle Pupas, and other misc. caddis pupa and larvae.  Have fun out there.

Really strong caddis hatches are on now. The fish are on Pupa's throughout the day with great chances to get them on dries increasing in the evening.

PMD's and Pale Evening Duns are also strong hatches now.

Happy Fourth of July!  Hopefully besides fire works and BBQ's you get a little fishing in.  The fishing has been pretty good.  Caddis building and PMD's kicking around. When we have some warmth and stbel weather we've been finding fair to good number of fish on the banks and in the eddies up and working.  We still could use some more full on a couple days in a row of real summer temps. We'll get it. Fishing will be even better then. It has been a little of this and a little of that. From good dry fly on the banks to nymphing and dry and a drop.

Salmonfly Hatch Wrap-Up:

We finished our spring season on the Deschutes this last week and wanted to offer a short summary of the action here.  We started May 12th and ended on June 14th and can honestly say we saw adult salmonflies and golden stones out and flying on every single trip. We did experience one slow trip in terms of fishing due to fluctuations in both the river levels and the barometric pressure but besides that trip I can only describe the fishing as good to great. A few trips hit the hatch just about perfect and great would begin to describe the fishing we had. On the days when we saw rain or heavy cloud cover pale morning duns and blue winged olives brought the fish to the surface with regularity. We also were fortunate enough  to catch some great green drake hatches along the way and if you have ever been in the right place at the right time for this hatch you know how incredible it can be.

We are now off in Idaho guiding on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River for  Helfrich River Outfitters and will be back on the Deschutes starting in early October for what looks to be an above average steelhead season. We still have a few openings in the latter part of October so drop us a line if you are interested in fishing with us this fall.

Weather still hasn't turn full throttle into summer time consistencey. A little hot, a litte rain, etc.  Once we get some warm and stable the caddis will blow up. With all that said fishing hasn't been bad. Not steady dry fly action all day long, but enough fish up to make it fun and get your shots.  The nymphing hasn't been bad, as well as the dry and the drop. A little spattering of everything. When it has been warm there have been caddis, and good numbers. Rain and crummy, mayflies have safed the day.  Not bad fishing, but room for improvement and that should be right around the corner when Juneuary turns into July.  Peak summer fishing ahead, should be good. Steelhead in a month, give or take and counting.

The guides have been coming in with excellent reports from the Warm Springs to Trout Creek drift, plus the Trout Creek to Maupin float is red hot now.

The primary hatches are PMD's and Caddis with a good Pale Evening Dun hatch in the evening before dark. Bring some rusty spinners and purple haze too.

Nymphs are really good now throughout the day. Caddis Pupa and small mayfly nymphs fished in tandem with or without an indicator will be your best bet.
