Deschutes River - Lower - May 10th, 2011
supplied by: Deschutes River Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Floated Warm Springs to Harpham the last three days. Classic spring trip. Traffic super light, weather Ok, a mix and fished well. River is up a bit, and a little bit more color than normal for the D, even up high. Interesting, how and what they are releasing? Either way it fished. We saw some BWO and a few March Browns. a few fish up and on them, but not tons. Those hatches are day to day on intesity. Big girdle bug type patterns fished well. Go to classic buckets in the riffles and tight to the banks produced. the fish are in such great shape this time of year, fat sassy and super clean. Beautiful! We did see one adult salmon fly around Maupin, things are going to start to happen. As the river drops, clears or at least stabilize and the more active the big bugs get the better things will be. Not a lot of open days for salmon fly hatch, book real soon. Not too early to lock in prime July- August summer time trips.

FISHING: Good
Check out a great article about being guided by Nate on the Deschutes written by a past and future client Steve Goodwin: http://stephenhardygoodwin.com/golf/travel/524/an-easterner-fishes-the-deschutes
Deschutes River Redside Trout Report: The water level is down around 5500cfs and for now it seems to be fairly stable. Look for Mahogany duns to be the more dominant Mayfly hatch. Igloo-cased caddis, Net spinning caddis, and Green rockworms will all become more prevalent as we head into the middle part of May.
Our Salmonfly/Stonefly hatch seems to be right on schedule. We have had exactly 2 reports of 2 individual Salmonfly sightings, but expect things to start to pick up towards the end of this week.
Right now the most consistent fishing has been nymphing, keep your presentations in tight to shore, a lot of the time those submerged grass hummocks that are normally dry are holding fish.
If you have any questions give John, myself (Nate), or Joe a call at 541-395-2565 and we will be happy to help.

FISHING: Good
On the Deschutes again this week from Warm Springs to Trout Creek. The river flows dropped down again and the river was at 5570 cfs. Nymphing produced most of the fish again this week as the hatches were sporadic at best. The fish are in great shape and we saw few smolts. As for flies, it didn't seem to matter too much at all. Just about everything sunk in the right spots accounted for fish. Fishing will just keep improving unless they do something weird with the flows.

FISHING: Fair
It's that time of year again. Time to let the Steelhead get on with reproduction and head out to find some trout looking up. The weather forecast called for increasing sun so it was an easy call to head back to the Deschutes. The river flows dropped down to a stable 6000 cfs as irrigation season kicks in here on the high desert. Nymphing was more productive than dry fly fishing this week, but both accounted for fish. The cloud cover and rain showers produced better mayfly hatches last week and with mostly sunny days we did see the March Browns and BWOs thin out somewhat. On the up side, warmer temps brought out more caddis. Focusing on the softer water and back eddies was the key and despite smolts in a few places, the majority of fish were in the 13-17 inch range, fat and feisty. Things will continue to improve with warmer weather and a falling river in the forecast.

Deschutes River - Lower - April 17th, 2011
supplied by: Deschutes River Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
Six Days away. The river is slowly getting dropped and looking promising for the opener at 6000 cfs. With all the rain and snow the reservoirs are pretty full and we haven't started to really get any run off. If we can keep the rivers at fishable levels ( i think she will be on the big side) it will be status quo. Wade carefully and look for the soft stuff. The insides and areas of riffles that normally are inches deep will fish. Grab some indicators, Girdle bugs, and some standby Copper Johns and the like and lets start harassing some trout. Keep your eyes peeled for March browns and blue wing olives. Not consistent but spring dry fly sessions can be great if they go.

Deschutes River - Lower - April 13th, 2011

FISHING: Good
Count down is on! Ten days till the whole river is open. River levels are on the bigger side but mellowing out?! It is about go time. This time of year is heavy on the nymphing, which can be good. Standard big stone fly type (Kaufmans stone, Jimmy Legs, Twenty Incher, etc) with a Copper John, Pheasant tail, Prince, Hares Ear, etc drop is a go to look. Keep your eyes peeled for Blue Wing Olives, March Browns or midging action on top. If the hatch goes, dry fly action can be good. Mid day gentleman hours are prime time.
Salmon fly dates VERY limited. If you want in book sooner than later.
Have fun and get out there! See you on the river.

FISHING: Poor
The River is on the high to very high (8530cfs at Madras) side right now from spring run-off. The good news is that this early run-off will hopefully make the run-off in May a little less of an issue...Time will tell I guess.
The other good news is that there are still some hardy souls out there catching fish. I've had a few reports of guys nymphing up fish behind submerged grass clumps and tree stumps...better than staying home I guess. Keep an eye on the river gauge on our website, flyfishingdeschutes.com, and look for the river to drop below 7000cfs and fishing should start to get good again.
Mid-day tends to have the best hatch activity with a mix of BWO's, March Browns, and Saddle-cased caddis. We should also start to see Mahogany duns in the mix pretty soon. Look for individual risers, and if you can't find them, head down with a nymph rig and see what you can find.
If you have any questions give John, myself (Nate), or Joe a call at 541-395-2565 and we will be happy to help.

Deschutes River - Lower - March 19th, 2011

FISHING: Fair
Good morning! Well, the only change form the last report until this report is the river level has risen to 6,420 CFS form what it was a little over a week ago, 5,350. The normal range is usually 4,900 to 5,500 for this month. The good news is that the trout are quick to make the adjustment and are actively feeding daily.
Trout are being caught off and on throughout the day, mostly the middle time frame of 11 AM to 4 PM. However, some fish are getting hooked up earlier in the morning, say around 9 AM or so. Hatches are fairly consistent with the normal fair. BWO's, small Caddis, Winter Stone's, and Midge. The March Brown's, size 14 ~ 12, are hatching along with the Spring Stone's (the Skwala Stone Fly) size 8 as an Adult and Nymph. Its the early stage for both of these hatches, but the trout could start keying in on them any day.
River clarity is good, Medium green color, and about 15 feet visibility. You will find trout feeding on dries in back eddies and slack water areas. More of these water types are created due to the high water flows, so don’t be fooled, trout move where water conditions take them, and high water brings them in really close. Blue Wing Olives and Igloo Case Building Caddis, is still the main hatch.
A good plan is to take a few moments to study and look for rising or sipping trout in back eddies, and slack water just inside a current edge that forms a food gathering seam. The winter cycle of the BWO’s on the Deschutes produce a nice size 16, but make sure you have some 18s just in case they get picky. Also, BWO’s always a must have in your fly box. The caddis is a size 18 ~ 20 and a very dark gray in color. Expect this activity to take place between noon and 3 PM.
Not looking up, them get down to em with some attractor patterns followed by a small natural looker. Yes, a two fly rig can help the end result of the day.
If you have Q’s, please give me, John, a call. Id be glad to help! (541) 395-2565, Anytime day or night!
