Driftless Area - May 24th, 2013
supplied by: Driftless Angler Fly Shop
RECORDED:
64 °
FISHING: Good
Bright sun today, but very pleasant weather to be out fishing!
Fishing has been quite good with our streams running clear to slightly stained area wide. Fish are eating craneflies, tan caddis have started to show up in greather numbers, and subsurface fishing has been quite good on scuds, pheasant tails, and gray bodied nymphs.
Leeches and streamers have also been very good early in the morning and late at night.
The weekend looks good, with some cloud cover and drizzle coming into the area.

Driftless Area - May 23rd, 2013

RECORDED:
63 °
FISHING: Good
Rain late yesterday put 1/4 to 1/2 an inch of rain into the system. Streams will be cloudy to clear with the larger waters (west fork, north fork etc) showing the heaviest stain.
The fishing has been really good with leeches, larger scuds, and San Juan worms on the stained waters. The clearer streams are still fishing strong on crane flies, caddis, and slim bodied nymphs.
Larger foam flies are starting to catch fish too. As things clear up a large indicator dry with a dropper below will be deadly again.

Driftless Area - May 22nd, 2013
supplied by: Driftless Angler Fly Shop
RECORDED:
62 °
FISHING: Good
Waters have dropped and cleared significantly from yesterday. There was clear, fishable water yesterday afternoon and today expexct stained to clear water area wide.
Fish are feeding well on craneflies and midges on the surface, as well as smaller terrestrials and foam 'indicator' flies. Caddis have been sparse, but a gray or brown caddis dry will pick up fish.
Subsurface fishing is still best on gray bodied, fuzzy nymphs as well as thin bodied midges and mayfly patterns.
Leeches have been fantastic, especially in darker water and when the clouds are in the area.

Driftless Area - May 21st, 2013

FISHING: Good
Good, solid fishing area wide!
Streamers and leeches early, then subsurface fishing on cranefly larvae (smaller, gray bodied nymphs) and caddis larvae. Finally in the mid day to evening some dry fly activity on cranes, midges and caddis.
We've been fishing dry/dropper a lot recently with good success. Many fish are even hitting the big, ugly foam 'indicator' dry.
Rain last night, although heavy at time, did not muddy up the streams significantly. Once again, expect clear to stained water today.

Driftless Area - May 20th, 2013
supplied by: Driftless Angler Fly Shop
RECORDED:
81 °
FISHING: Good
Cloudy and a chance of storms today. Some heavy rain last night will have streams up a bit and stained to clear first thing this morning.
We are still in the thick of our cranefly and caddis hatches, and the fish have been more than happy to eat! Splashy rises, chasing down soft hackles and streamers, and feeding heavily on nymphs.
Water temps are great, hovering in the mid 40s to mid 50s even with some really hot, sunny days.
The bankside vegetation is still low, with a few signs of filling out, and morels are just starting to be spotted.

FISHING: Great
Despite some rain in the morning, fishing was fantastic yesterday. Leeches and streamers early, then switching to caddis and cranefly larvae subsurface, and finally finishing off in the evening with some dry fly fishing on smaller foam beetles, caddis and cranefly dries.
Waters are in good shape overall, with only a couple stained this morning, the rest are running clear and cool.

Driftless Area - May 17th, 2013
supplied by: Driftless Angler Fly Shop
RECORDED:
68 °
FISHING: Good
Rain this morning should clear out of the area by noon. It is not enough rain to mess up the streams permanently, but expect a stain and rising water this morning and possibly into the afternoon.
Scuds, pink squirrels and san juan worms will be the food of choice in the rising waters.
Into the weekend the cranefly bite will be back on with fish feeding in riffles and runs below the riffles. Splashy rises indicate cranefly or caddisfly feeding fish.
Do not forget to twitch, skitter, and skate your flies, both surface and subsurface. This has been the trigger lately as the fish are responding to movement.

Driftless Area - May 16th, 2013

RECORDED:
79 °
FISHING: Great
Fishing has been very good, even with bluebird skies.
Craneflies and midges are hatching like crazy and fish are up in the riffles feeding. There are a handful of tan caddis popping here and there, as well as some sporadic mayflies and stoneflies coming off throughout the day too.
We have had great success fishing a high visibility foam fly, such as a beetle or foam bodied caddis, with a nymph dropper. Subsurface fishing has been really solid on anything gray with a thick body (think hare's ear style) as well as pheasant tails and brightly colored nymphs and scuds.
Leeches and streamers have been working well early in the mornings, and later in the day when the sun is not directly on the water.

Driftless Area - May 15th, 2013
supplied by: Driftless Angler Fly Shop
RECORDED:
74 °
FISHING: Good
Fishing was really solid yesterday despite the bright sun. Fish were eating subsurface on cranefly larvae, thicker bodied patterns fished deep, and pheasant tails.
Surface action was hot on beetles, caddis, craneflies, and some larger foam patterns. Don't fear the foam, it is starting to catch quite a few fish, even the larger patterns.
Waters are clear, with temps in the mid 40s to high 50s.

Driftless Area - May 14th, 2013
supplied by: Driftless Angler Fly Shop
RECORDED:
86 °
FISHING: Good
Tempted to rate the fishing better, but today's hot sunny weather might keep the fishing as good not great.
Craneflies have been hatching and getting some larger fish rising. If you see splashy rises, the fish are probably eating craneflies.
Subsurface fishing has been hot lately too with fish eating smaller, thin bodied bugs twitched along undercut banks, and scuds and other thicker bodied patterns rolled along the bottom in deeper holes.
With the bright sun, find some shade and you will find more active fish.
Waters are clear, and temps are in the mid 40s to mid 50s.
