Hoh River - March 7th, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
35 °
FISHING: Excellent
Hoh is out of shape right with the recent rains but with cooler weather coming it should be in by Saturday. Fish are spread around from upper river all the way to bottom of river. A bunch of new fish are showing up and are spread all the way through the system.
Remember that whole river is Selective gear rules with no retention of wild fish..
Gear Tactics:
The three primary tactics are Plug Pulling, Side Drifting or Floatfishing. If pulling plugs then stick with all sizes of plugs in Silver, Silver/Red, Flame Red, White/Red, Dr. Death, Green, or Blue. You can Side Drift wth Worms, Corky and Yarn, Gooey Bobs or other fake eggs. Float fisherman tend to fish either with worms or Jigs.
Fly Tactics:
Most of the fly fishing is done in the Upper River where you don't have to compete with the bait fisherman, but check out the lower River as there some great Fly runs down there. Stick with Bigger flies in the Hoh. We like to use Black, Purple, Orange, Red and Pink. The Skagit Monster in my favorite with the Steel Wooly, General Practioner, Hare Ball Leech and Intruders as my second choice. In the Pockets we fish with lead eye nymphs in Cotton Candy, Pink, Pink/White and Orange with a 2 foot dropper with a glo bug or trout bead.
This one is real good right now and will only geat better each day.

Hoh River - February 11th, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
52 °
FISHING: Good
The Upper Hoh has dropped into shape with about 2' visibilty. There are a few fish spread out in the upper river. As water drops it will get better. If you are going to float the Hoh you will want to watch for new channels and Log jams, so be carefull!!!!!!!
There will still be some hatchery fish around but more wild fish. The upper river above the bridge is Selective gear rules and will be the first place that the river will come into shape. This will be a plug show the first day or so. As the river drops and clears you can switch over to other techinques. You might want to try drift fishing some Pink Worms or our favorite one is a metholate worm.
If you are after a steelhead on the Fly then is the river with the most access and the best Swinging water on the coast. You will want to fish with big flies in Black, Orange, Pink or Purple. One of our favorites is the Skagit Monster which is a big Marabou fly with chartruese, orange an red. As the water clears we will try some nymph fishing with small lead eye flies tied in Pink, Steelhead Orange and the two together.
Remember that these fish are just like the other coastal steelhead in that are going to move up-river fast in the early season, so spend the majority of your time in the upper river.
