Jemez Area Streams - April 25th, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
64 °
FISHING: Fair
Flows are receding as I write this despite the recent snow. I would use stonefly nymphs and beadheads, especially at depths where light has trouble cutting through the murk. I've always liked fishing a dirty Jemez with a small white winged streamer, jigging it in pockets just as you would a Panther Martin spinner. Also pack Anvil Eggs, San Juan Worms and Double Browns. Jig behind rocks, use a lot of weight and keep a tight line.

Jemez Area Streams - March 18th, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
57 °
FISHING: Good
Once the main river turns south around the San Antonio confluence, you'll find good sun exposure and more open water and biting fish. Small black stoneflies are hatching throughout the day, and a few fish are even rising to them. I would fish small tungsten nymphs, zebras, rainbow warriors, bead worms in brown, and micromays. Small black mayfly imitations should serve as a good stone imitation. Fish lower downstream too, by Jemez Springs. I've seen some recent photos of some decent browns. Oh, and check in with New Mexico Trout if you want to participate in the Guadalupe River cleanup this year.

Jemez Area Streams - February 2nd, 2010

FISHING: Good
Hunch only. See the Pecos report; all you need is ganas, and maybe you'll get a fish or two.

Jemez Area Streams - October 21st, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
44 °
FISHING: Fair
Catch as catch can, depending on the weather. Battleship on down would be my bet, but I'm sure there will be fish moving in the slower water upstream. Watch for newly made spawning nests please. The Jemez is a fragile fishery.

Jemez Area Streams - October 8th, 2009

RECORDED:

FISHING: Good
Teeny tiny everything. If you kept a cluster midge on the line most of the day, you would do fine. Spawning sites are obvious.

Jemez Area Streams - September 28th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
70 °
FISHING: Good
Small olives are getting the fish up on the Jemez and its tribs, if you run into periods of selectivity that is. Otherwise, the usual run of small caddis, ants, beetles, and hoppers will turn up a nice day's fishing. Nymphs should be small through most of the water, and unweighted except for in the pools. Midweek is a magical time up there, aspens and bugling elk. And solitude.

Jemez Area Streams - August 26th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
81 °
FISHING: Good
The Valles Caldera fishes well for anglers who can throw a long and accurate line with a long, light leader. Patch adams, tiny elk hairs and ants will do just fine. Again, don't underestimate the trouts' ability to see things and spook. The water is low with some algae in it, but cold nights are keeping it cool enough for good fishing through most of the day.

Jemez Area Streams - August 17th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
70 °
FISHING: Great
Very cold nights are resulting in nice dry fly fishing throughout the day. You are actually better off starting later. Small mayflies are filling the air around midday, but my August fallback for the Jemez is always ants, small green Stalcup's hoppers, and small Patch Adams.

Jemez Area Streams - July 27th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
82 °
FISHING: Fair
Get out there early, hit it for a while, take a long snooze after lunch, preferrably under a tree with no ant piles around, and hit the water again upon waking up or after the afternoon rain shower. The water's been warm, and it'll take some shade or rain cooling to get the fish on it again. Speaking of ants, everyone who comes in to buy beetles and ants is going to the Jemez, as though no other stream has them. Well they all do; people from Los Alamos are the only ones who don't worry about not being able to see small black dry flies like ants. Jemez folks just know they work.

Jemez Area Streams - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
74 °
FISHING: Good
High bright sun can be a problem in the meadow areas, but generally you'll be finding plenty of fish in a terrestrial eating mood. I like a hopper trailed by a hard shelled ant. They'll likely hit the ant. Watch out for the storms; they'll move in on you fast.
