Jemez Area Streams - January 24th, 2005
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Fair
Sangre de Cristo Streams: Cold until spring. Higher elevation waters are pretty well kaput.

Chama River Watershed: Fair fishing below both dams. Lower flows (less than 100cfs) make fish more accessible, but please think of these as catch-and-release stretches for wild fish.

Jemez Area Streams: No change. Fishing best in the lower parts of the watershed, especially around Jemez Springs. Upper sections (especially canyons) are still a bit too cold.

Albuquerque Area Drains: In the Rio Grande "bosque" areas, canals have been dug to channel crystal-clear groundwater from adjacent field areas back into the river channel. The very opposite of irrigation ditches, these man-made spring creek "drains" are home to resident trout and bass. If you want a real winter challenge, try sneaking up of these fellows for a couple hours of fun.

FISHING: Fair
Jemez Area Streams: Fishing okay in the lower parts of the watershed, especially around Jemez Springs with beadheads. Upper sections (especially canyons) are a bit too cold for best fishing. If you know where the various springs moderate the water temperature, then you know where to focus your outings.

FISHING: Good
Jemez Area Streams: No change. Pretty good reports on a number of streams. Take the little nymphs, and hope for a little dry fly action on warmer days.

Sangre de Cristo Streams:Getting cold fast. Act quickly and get in one more trip before heading elsewhere.

McAllister Lake: Hurry up! Fishing is producing some fat fish up to 20" on olive streamers. The legal season will end Oct. 31.

Chama River Watershed: Irrigation season is pretty well over and flows have dropped below both dams. Some reports of stocked fish at from Abiquiu, and El Vado is producing some stocked and wild fish. The water is murky, so use nymphs and streamers.

Jemez Area Streams - October 7th, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Fair
Heavy rain the last two days in many places has lowered temperatures and sent water levels up. A couple days of clear weather will settle the murkiness and leave good fishing.

Jemez Area Streams: The rain muddies up the meadows and the volcanic silt takes a long time to settle out, but cooler temperatures wake up these streams. Take fine tippets, small dry flies and some little nymphs along, too.

Valle Vidal: Flows are too low for fishing, thanks to the end of irrigation season.

Valle Vidal: No change in fishing, but managers are hearing elk bugles in early morning. Flows are staying at good levels until irrigation flows are cut later in September. Check flows before you head out on our "Links page" .  Fishing has been good at Shuree but not for lunkers.  This area is all "special trout water"; please check all the regs before visiting. There is a New Mexico Trout/Trout Unlimited work project in the area this weekend; call Art Vollmer 474-1495 if you can help.
