Klamath River - November 3rd, 2011
supplied by: SC Guide Service
RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Excellent
Conner and I got in a little late morning early afternoon fishing on Tuesday and the bite was very good, despite the huge weather change. The temperatures in the mornings have been 32 and below the last few days but that has not stopped the Steelhead and Trout from biting. As I write this today, Weed and Mt. Shasta experienced some of the first snow of Winter. It was just cold here in Montague. Conner landed a nice 21 inch Hatchery Buck Steelhead, which became his dinner later that evening (BBQ Lemon Steelhead). He landed that particular Steely while backtrolling a nightcrawler behind a Luhr Jensen jet diver, we also caught other smaller steelies and trout while fly fishing glowbug under an indicator and backtrolling small hotshots. Winter Steelhead is just beginning here on the upper Klamath and I have plenty of open dates to for you to get in on the action, so check out my Calendar page and give me call 530 905 0758.

You can throw the kitchen sink to catch Steelhead and Trout right now. With the end of the salmon run and spawning salmon everywhere, the Steelhead and Trout are feeding on anything in their path. My clients over the weekend had near non stop action on half pound to 4 pound Steelhead and Trout. Bait, Flies, Plugs either backtrolled, sidedrifted, under an indicator all worked well in various locations while drifting from the hatchery to the Klamathon bridge. Pick your poison and head on over to the Klamath for some great Winter Steelheading the weather is excellent right now.

Klamath River Keno Stretch - Water level seems stable. The Keno stretch has been epic since it re-opened October 1st even with super low water for a few days!  Sculpzillas and Cone Head Kiwi Muddlers have been very productive. Nymphing beneath a strike indicator has been attracting lots of attention as well. Call the shop to book a trip down this fantastic stretch of Redband Rainbow water before winter gets a grip.

Klamath River below JC Boyle Dam - Fishing good to steady

Swing traditional streamer patterns early before dam outflow increases. Nymphing under a strike indicator also has been working well.

Salmon fishing has finally slowed down on the upper Klamath river but adult Winter Steelhead are starting to show up. My client Ted and I fly fished for Steelhead the last two days and landed some nice adults up to 4 pounds with plenty of half pounders and a few salmon mixed in. Flies fished under an indicator produced the best results, although we did get hook ups while swinging flies. Steelhead fishing will improve each day as the Salmon spawn and die off and more Steelhead move up from the lower river. I have open days for fly fishing trips or plugs/bait or both. Check out my Calendar page to find the day that works for you.

RECORDED:    78 °   FISHING: Excellent
Salmon fishing on the upper Klamath River remains hot! My clients the last three days have been hooking up on 30 or more Salmon and landing better than half of those fish. Most of these fishermen and woman have been first timers, meaning it has been pretty easy to catch and land fish. We have been landing most of the Salmon on roe but we have been getting a few on kwikfish plugs. We are still seeing fresh fish moving up into the spawning grounds and we are starting to see some bigger fish in the 12 to 20 plus pound range. Fishing should remain steady at least until the end of the month, perhaps longer.

**I have Friday October 28 and Sunday the 30th available this week for either Salmon or Steelhead, you can checkout my Calendar page for more available days in November and December**

First time Salmon fisherwoman Rachel Bagwell of Yreka had a excellent time fishing on the upper Klamath river yesterday. This was literally Rachel's first time fishing, but she showed great skill in quickly learning how to bounce roe down the river. Rachel hooked up on 14 salmon landing 9 of them. Out of those 9 two were 20 pounds, one of which she kept, a nice hard fighting Buck. We released the 20 pound hen she caught later in the day. The bite is still going strong and we had good action most of the day. It is always hard to tell how much longer the run will last but history has show the last few years it starts to slow as we get closer to November.

On Sunday the Mom and Son team of Gloria and Chris Calkins put on great display of teamwork. After 25 minutes of fishing Gloria put nearly 40 pounds of Salmon into the cooler and together with her 13 year old quick draw mcgraw son Chris they nailed 21 out of 25 Salmon on the day.

Salmon fishing on the upper Klamath River continues to be off the chart. My Thursday and Friday clients from Eco Auto Glass (Jamie, Larry, Pat, and Robert) had two of the best days back to back on the river, a fisherman could ask for, with the help of Bill Jesperson Guide Service of Montague the guys hooked up on nearly 150 Salmon while landing close to 50% of those fish. That is was a lot of rod bending and rebaiting of the hooks. We are starting to see some bigger Salmon with hens in the 12 to 18 pound range and bucks in the 17 to 25 pound class. The weather has been darn near perfect, my guys Brian and Sam experienced one of the most pleasant Saturday's this October has to offer Sunny and 75 with no wind and plenty of biting Salmon.

Mother Nature has tried a few times to dampen the Salmon season but she has not been successful. Monday was one of those wet dog days but that seemed to only make the Salmon bite even better. My clients George and Rob lost count of how many fish we put in the net, it was that good. It seemed like we had barely put the Roe in the water before another Salmon was on. Definitely, one of those you should have been here yesterday fishing experiences. Tuesday, was filled with firsts. Three boys ages 16, 15 and 12 who had never really fished let alone fish for Salmon on the Klamath River. All three got their first Salmon, and the youngest Mitchell went home with the bragging rights, for landing the biggest Salmon of the season, a nice 36 inch 25 pound buck. Overall, the fish size is still small but we are starting to see a few bigger fish but the constant action more than makes up for it.

***I have some days open next week starting on Tuesday October 18 for either Salmon or Steelhead, give me a call at 530 905 0758 to book a trip***

Salmon fishing on the upper Klamath is going strong. My clients have been landing between 12 and 25 Salmon per trip and limits of adult Salmon are not a problem. Overall, fish size continues to be small with many adult males in the 22 to 28 inch range. The last few trip have starting to produce some nice hens in the 12 to 20 pound class, but not many. Most of the fish have been caught while using roe, but we did land a couple of fish today while back-trolling Kwikfish plugs. The weather has been outstanding the last few days, the morning have been quite chilly but once the sun comes up it warms up nicely.

***I have one day open this week Wednesday October 12 if you would like to go Salmon fishing or check out my Calendar page to book another day for Salmon or Winter Steelhead I can be reached at 530 905 0758 ***
