Klamath River - January 1st, 2011

FISHING: Good
I spent the last week of 2010 fishing with my son Conner and my Dad. The weather has been downright frigid making the fishing conditions pretty tough. Wind, rain, snow and temperatures below 32, have the Klamath River running pretty cold, as in 40 degree cold. We did all our fishing between the hours of 11:30am and 4pm, while trying to take advantage of the warmest part of the day. Conner and my Dad landed Steelhead in the 2 to 5 pound range on a variety of methods: crawdad plugs, hotshot worm combo, rapalas, spinners, and swinging a zonker on a sinking fly line. The common factor in all these methods was back trolling as slow as possible while working in a crossing pattern from one shoreline to the other. Happy New Year and may this year of 2011 be a great year for you all, Fish On!!

Klamath River - December 23rd, 2010

FISHING: Good
There are some nice Christmas Steelies waiting to be caught. My client Bill landed a pair of nice Steelies in the 3 and 4 pound range while swinging a zonker fly today. The river is really cold so working the water as slow as possible is vital to getting bit. The river is seeing very little pressure and we only saw two other boats during our drift from the Hatchery to the Klamathon Bridge. If you are looking to get in that last Steelhead trip of 2010, give me a call, I have some days available. I will continue my Holiday special rate of $299 for 2 until Jan. 1, 2011.

FISHING: Good
The last few trips have been quite the mix of weather; of course it has all been on the cold side. It has definitely been Winter Steelhead on the Klamath River with temperatures ranging from 20 to 40 degrees as well as rain and 3 inches of snow mixed in. Despite the tough weather, my clients and friends and I managed to land some nice Steelhead up to 5 pounds and well over 20 inches. Bait, Flies and Plugs have all produced 1/2 pounders on up to Adult Steelhead, the key now being working fish holding areas very slowly. My buddy Phil and I were out this past Thursday and it snowed the entire 4 hours were we on the river. Mother Nature dropped 2 to 3 inches of snow in the boat making it a winter fishing wonderland. We landed two nice Adults in the 3 pound range and quite a few 1/2 pound plus Steelies. Two days later, my clients Bob and Craig got to fish in cold clear weather but all that snow had melted and dropped the river temperature 3 to 4 degrees. This made for a sluggish bite in the morning but after lunch the bite got better as the daily temperature rose near 40. Bob landed the prize Steelhead of the day while swinging a zonker fly, a fat Hatchery Steelhead in the 5 pound class and well over 20 inches. There is not a lot of traffic out on the Klamath River so if you don’t mind the weather there are some nice fish waiting to be caught.

Klamath River - November 24th, 2010

FISHING: Excellent
Today was one of those days it would have been very easy to just stay home on the warm couch and enjoy pre-Turkey day, but it was a good thing we chose not to. Conner, Dad and I bundled up and got on the water at 1pm. We waited thinking it would warm up a bit this afternoon, wrong, it was still 25 degrees, and that was as warm as it got. Sometimes it does pay to brave the elements. Conner and Dad were rewarded with the best adult Steelhead day of the season. In a little over 3 hours we landed 6 adult Steelhead (all wild) plus a few 1/2 to 1 1/2 pounder fish. Conner landed his biggest Steelhead ever, a beautiful wild 26 inch 8 pound buck that inhaled his rebel crawdad plug. When the water reaches mid to upper 40's the Steelhead can get sluggish, well not today, they bit hard, jumped and made Conner Dad and I work hard to land them, pretty much every reason we Steelhead fish! Dad also got into the act landing two very nice adult Steelhead in the 3 and 4 pound class, one while bouncing a whole threaded night crawler and the other on the rebel crawdad plug. I started the day with the first adult Steelhead in the 2 pound class while bouncing a worm, Conner then followed my effort with another 2 pounder, before he and Dad landed the bigger boys of the trip. The season is really shaping up to be a good one, we are seeing bigger adult Steelhead and more hard fighting fish than we have seen in the last few years. The best part, no matter how harsh the weather the fish keep biting, hopefully, that will be the norm all season.

Klamath River Keno section is Super! We've been doing great with sculpin patterns and caddis emergers. Chironomids (ice cream cones) in red and black have been producing as well.
When streamer fishing try using a dead drift technique. It's what they want. Water levels have dropped recently so fish are starting to be concentrated again. Definately a great winter fishing option. We expect to fish this stretch well into January.

FISHING: Excellent
You have to love when a teaching lesson is rewarded. My client Tom Stephenson (Costa Mesa and Hornbrook CA) hired me to teach him how to fish and row the Klamath River in his new Willie Drift boat, today. Tom is a fairly new resident of Hornbrook and has a great house right on the river, Tom also fished with me over 8 years ago and landed a nice 7 plus pound Steelhead (if you look at the top of my webpage that is Tom 8 years ago with me behind him) back then. Today was the maiden voyage, and I have to say Tom did a great job rowing down the river for the very first time. We happened to be right behind his house, and I was showing Tom how to bounce bait through a hole, when I hooked a fish, I then handed the rod off to Tom, as we switched places and he expertly battle and landed what turned to be the biggest fish of the Winter season, a fat 24-inch 7.5pound Hatchery Steelhead. Team efforts do payoff well sometimes. Good thing it was a Hatchery fish, Tom was told by his Wife not to come home without fish for dinner. The rest of the day went well as we worked through a few different methods of bait, fly and plug fishing all of which produced 1/2 pounders and a couple of more adult Steelhead in the 2 pound class. The weather was cold and rainy but the fish are hungry and there is not a lot of traffic out on the water right now.

FISHING: Great
It was a frosty morning on the upper Klamath River yesterday. My clients Jeff Howard and Russ Hickley of the California Fly Fishers Association drifted and swung some frozen flies in the early part of the morning but by lunch time the sun was out for a while and warmed everything up. The guys landed some nice Steelhead before and after lunch, using egg and nymph patterns under an indicator as well as on the swing, using big streamers. We also landed a fairly clean hen while I was showing the guys where to swing a fly. I’m amazed at how hard that Salmon fought so late in the season got the heart pumping hard thinking it was a 15 pound Steely, especially with the long runs she made, but it was still fun anyway. Check out the pictures of Jeff and Russ's trip it was their first time in a drift boat and fishing the upper Klamath for Steelhead.

FISHING: Great
It was another 30 plus fish day on the upper Klamath. My clients caught over 30 Steely Trout again today, although the fish were all 1/2 pound to 1 pound they put up a good fight and are in great shape. The weather has been all over the place the last few days, we have seen lots of rain some snow and very cold morning temperatures as well as some afternoon sun, so come prepared. I will be out on the river again tomorrow but I do have openings in the coming weeks so give me a call 530 905 0758.
