FISHING: Excellent
The weather was ugly but the fishing was great. My clients Ej and George landed over 30 fish today, despite the morning snow, and the all day cold rain. The guys landed 5 adult Steelies 4 wild and 1 hatchery amongst the 30, with George taking big fish honors, landing a 22 inch 5 pound wild steely. We will be back at it tomorrow hopefully the weather will be a less harsh.

FISHING: Excellent
The fishing on the river has been on fire. My cousin Chris (Mission Viejo) came to visit the same time my Dad got back from his cruise and along with Conner, the trio caught and released 95 Steely Trout. They had non-stop action most of the three days we were on the river. Saturday, we had a high of 42 fish while Sunday's total was 33. Despite the cold rainy conditions on Sunday the bite did not stop, it also seemed to help the bigger fish become more active, 10 of the 33 Steely Trout were over 1.5 pounds and topping out at 3 pounds. Dad landed the best fish of the three days a nice wild Steelhead that was over 20 inches and weighed 4 pounds. We back trolled the hotshot worm combo the entire time. I’ll be out on the river the next 3 days but I have openings if you are interested in getting in on the action.

FISHING: Excellent
The Steely trout bite is red hot. My clients Don and Jim caught and released 35 fish today all while backtrolling a hotshot worm combo, in the upper stretches of the Klamath River. Most of the fish were 1/2 to 11/2 pounds, but we did land a couple 2 plus pound Steelies. We had one 5 pounder that we nearly landed but it spit the hook as we dipped the net in the water. A picture would have been nice, but it was close enough to see it was a wild fish, that would have had to have been released anyway. We also hooked a couple of old Salmon, one we landed and just pulled the hook out, the other was close to 20 pounds and full of life, he put up quite a battle on 6 pound line. The Steelies are hanging right behind the in-river spawners, so anywhere you find Salmon, the Steelies are feeding heavy right below them.

FISHING: Great
It has been raining the past two days, much more today than yesterday. I fished my client Brant Smith of Danville Ca on Tuesday between storms. The fish gods must have been on our side on Tuesday, as we only had a minor shower during the trip, although it was pretty cold with a few wind gusts mixed in. The great thing about all that weather was the Steelies didnt care. We had constant action throughout the day landing Steelhead up to 4 pounds, mostly swinging streamer flies. We did fish a bit with the glowbugs under an indicator and probed a few spots with a hotshot worm combo just to see if there were some fish in the area. The half pounder bite is excellent and we are seeing a few more adult Steelies as we head into Winter. The weather report is saying it will be wet and rainy through the weekend and by Monday we should cloudy with some sun mixed in. Sounds like Winter Steelhead season is here!!

FISHING: Excellent
It was wet it was windy and it was cold but that didnt stop the Steely Trout bite from being hot. I fished the Blanchards on Saturday despite the poor weather and they caught over 20 fish with one in the 3 pound 20 inch class. Most of the fish were in the 1/2 to 2 pound range. We caught all the fish while back trolling a hotshot worm combo. The Salman are spawing throughout the river and the Steelies are feeding like crazy, so now is the time to get in on the action.

FISHING: Excellent
October 17 thru the 21st report -- The Salmon season has slowed to a crawl this past week. We are seeing Salmon beginning to spawn and very few fresh fish moving up. At the beginning of the week, we were putting 4 to 6 Salmon in the boat, and by Thursday the numbers were down to one. The last two days, my new client Chuck Colwell (Camarillo, Ca) and I targeted Steelhead and fished just a few spots for Salmon. The hal- pounder bite is outstanding; we caught and released over 30 fish the past two days. We would have caught well over 30 Steelies yesterday, but we had an epic battle with a near 20 pound Salmon. Chuck and I were backtrolling a hotshot worm trailer and having great success on the half-pounders as well as a few adults in the 2 to 3 pound class, when Chuck hooked into what we thought was a big Steelie. The thinking and hope that our fish was a big Steelie, was that the 3 pounder we had caught earlier, never jumped and stayed down near the bottom the entire battle. With this in mind, we were fishing well below the heron tree hole, when the fish took our offering, what ensued over the next two hours was a battle that mirrored the Old man and the Sea. Chuck is 83 years young and was as stubborn as that fish. I rowed the up and down the river for 60 minutes while that fish stayed down in the current finally showing herself with a spectacular leap out the water. I was moving to some slower water near the edge of the river and she did not like the pressure and she let us know by launching a good three feet out of the river. This was the other reason for thinking she was a nice Steelie. So back down deep she went and up the river, right into the heron tree hole. This is deep swirling hole which all the fish love, they can stay down deep and fight hard for a very long time, as we found out. We are now 90 minutes into the battle, and you are probably wondering why it took so long to land this Salmon, well, we were fishing with a 9ft custom Rogue spin rod rated for 2 to 6 pound test and a small Pflueger president spin reel loaded with 4 pound Yo-Zuri hybrid line, (we had a six pound leader with a single size 4 barbless Gamagatsu hook trailing behind the size 30 hotshot). I am still amazed that the leader and main line withstood that battle. At this point, Chuck was spent and needed to eat and have a drink, so I held the rod and hoped the fish would stay on until Chuck could recoup some energy. We hooked this fish at 12:20 just before we were going to eat lunch. Finally, Chuck was ready to go 20 minutes later and at 2:25, she finally gave up and came into the net, this was the third time we were able to actually see her. Chuck took a quick pic with his camera and back in the water she went that old girl deserved to live a while longer after putting up one heck of a battle. The main line on reel was toast after inspecting it but that leader did not have one nick in it amazing!!

FISHING: Good
Fishing the last 4 days on the upper Klamath River has been pretty good for Salmon. My clients have been hooking up to a dozen Salmon per trip and landing around 50% of them. The last couple of mornings the kwikfish bite has been good but it slowed today and my guys had to work hard to put 4 fish in the boat. The bite as of today was much better early in morning vs. the afternoon. We are have been seeing the bigger bucks starting to show up over the last few days as evidence by the number of bucks we have been landing and the their size. My client Stanley Green landed the biggest Salmon of the season on Wednesday (41 inch, 30 pound Buck) while bouncing roe and yesterday Nick landed a 39 inch 26 pound buck back trolling a kwikfish. Usually, when we start to these bigger bucks the Salmon run slows down but today all the Salmon we put in the boat were hens and most of the Salmon we lost were hens, so odd are we have at least another week of Salmon fishing on the upper Klamath but like last year we could get a fresh run of fish and have good fishing till November.

FISHING: Great
It was the best day on the river so far this season. George and his son Zack landed 10 out 14 Salmon today. They missed quite a few other opportunities to get solid hook ups, but steady action is what we always look for when we are fishing anywhere! Bait stealing grabs are what keep you pumped up and ready for that next possible hook up and we had many of those today. The Salmon were very active when we floated into the first hole this morning as the sun was just starting to come up. We fished the edges of the fast water and right in the middle of the slow moving frog water. We had good success in getting bit and landing Salmon using those tactics. As I have mentioned in past reports and I will mention again I feel this year’s Salmon are some of the best fighting Salmon we have had in quite some time. Many of my seasoned clients have made the same comment on what a great battle these fish are providing this season. I will be off the river for the next two days as my Dad completes a full 6 months of chemotherapy, and then will have his Scans to see where we are at. I want to thank all those who have asked and wished my Dad the best. I also want to put out there and to add to you prayer list my fellow guide friend Craig who is fighting his own Cancer battle and is on chemo and is out here there doing his best for his clients. You rock Craig!!!

FISHING: Good
Salmon fishing on the Klamath River has been steady the last couple of days. My clients Shannon and her husband Tim landed 6 out 8 Salmon on Thursday. Today, Joe and Tim landed 8 out 12 Salmon. All of the Salmon with the exception of one were caught while bouncing Roe, the other was caught on a kwikfish plug. The Salmon have been good size, 3 of the four we kept today were between 18 and 22 pounds. Fresh fish are arriving everyday now as the bulk of the run should be in our area within the next week or so.
