Klamath River - October 6th, 2010
supplied by: SC Guide Service
RECORDED:    78 °   FISHING: Good
Keith and Steve had a great morning on the river as they landed 7 out 10 Salmon. The bite was pretty steady from the time we got on the water till we got off just after noon. The Salmon are fighting hard this year, many are jumping out of the water like steelhead which is rare, most Salmon like to stay in the current and use their size to try and get free. I have some days open if you are interested in the action.

RECORDED:    65 °   FISHING: Fair
Weather conditions have been all over the place the last couple of days. Temperatures in our area have ranged from 38 to 95 degrees, with clouds rain sun and wind mixed in. The Salmon continue make their way up the river but the bite has been fair at best. We have hooked up 15 Salmon the past two days landing 7 of them. Abby and her Dad Steve put 3 fish in the boat on Tuesday while the Skiles (Gary and his two sons Bernie, Daren) group put 4 in the boat today. The Salmon are in great shape as it is still early in the season here. I have been backtrolling k-15 kwikfish or having clients bounce roe to pick up the Salmon.

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Good
Wayne White of Redding California and my oldest client at 79 years landed the biggest Salmon of the season today, a hard fighting 39-inch 25-pound Buck. The Salmon slammed a k-15 kwikfish early this morning and nearly ripped the rod out of the rod holder but Wayne was able battled the brute expertly to the net. Stuart Wayne's grandson had to hold the fish for the photo, Wayne arm we shaking too much after the excitement of the battle. We landed three other nice Salmon and lost three others while bouncing roe or backtrolling kwikfish. The bite has been a little off for the past few days but that didn’t stop this weekend from being the busiest, we probably saw close to a hundred driftboats make their way down the river on Saturday and Sunday.

RECORDED:    90 °   FISHING: Good
The last 3 days, I have been fishing with my oldest clients and their grandsons (Stanley 77 and Jacob 15) (Wayne 79 and Stuart 32). They have combined to hook up on 25 Salmon while bringing 9 of them into the net. The bite has been on the slow side despite seeing many Salmon moving up the river. We have been using kwikfish and roe both with about equal success. We are seeing large temperature swings right now (nearly 50 degrees) very cool in the mornings to low 90's in the afternoon, which is typical for this time of the year. Today was the busiest day on the river so far (35 to 45 driftboats) which is a lot for our little part of the river. I will be out again tomorrow with Wayne and Stuart and we will be doing the while drift from the hatchery to the Klamathon bridge. I still have some weekdays open if you want to get in on the action.

RECORDED:    95 °   FISHING: Fair
Stanley Green my oldest client (77) brought his 15 year old grandson Jacob to fish with us this season. Jacob not only landed his first Salmon but also his biggest fish ever. It did not take the young lad long to get the hang of bouncing roe, and for those of you who have fished in the river for Salmon with me or another guide, know what I’m talking about, it does take some practice. Of course, Stanley not wanting to be outdone landed the first Salmon of the day and the biggest (a nice 20 pound hen). The guys went 3 for 8 on the Salmon, before the bite shut down and the weather got hot. It is really nice out on water, from 6am till about 10 or 11, after that the Sun is up and blazing. Jacob and Stanley will be at it again tomorrow so perhaps the Jacob's biggest fish record will go down again.

RECORDED:    90 °   FISHING: Good
Friday the 24th thru the 27th

We have been hooking 6 to 12 Salmon per trip and landing 50% or better over the last 4 days. The weather is cool in the mornings and hot in the afternoon with temperatures reaching into the 90's today. Bouncing roe or backtrolling K-15 kwikfish have been producing Salmon consistently. Today was tougher than the previous three days; the Salmon just did not want to stay on the hook. We got one Salmon in the boat today out of 4 solid hooks ups. My guys Tom and Pete had plenty of bites but they were very short and fast. On Friday, the second day of the Caldwell Clan, my brother Lance went 5 out 7 and his son Eric landed 2 out 3, Dad ran a not so close third after being the Champ on Thursday. Saturday, my friends Jon and Robyn had a good day taking home 3 really nice Salmon. The fish are in really good condition nice orange colored meat. Finally yesterday my client Norman played myth buster on my boat as he ate a banana in my boat then proceeded to land the first Salmon shortly after.

RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Great

If you want to guarantee a fish in the boat just put a woman in one seat. Well, it was Lady's day today and all the seats were filled with woman. Abby, Monique, and (almost 3) Zoe got in some early season salmon fishing on the Klamath River today and were rewarded with 3 out 5 Salmon. The day couldn't have started much faster as we put out the k-15 kwikfish just past the 3500ft sign, and within 1 minute Monique had a nice fish on. After a short battle the fish got close enough to the boat for the early morning "oh nice one" , but at that moment Mr. Kwikfish got spit free, and the early morning "nice one" went to the early morning @@@@ one that got away!!! It wasn't too much longer after that, Monique hooked another nice Salmon on the kwikfish, but this time it found its way into the net. It was a nice 14 pound buck, which at cleaning time had some very nice orange meat!! The next three Salmon were hooked while bouncing roe, two of which were in the same spot. Once again Monique had another nice Salmon on, this time it was a 20 pound hen, the 4 big fish of the day. Once we got the fish in the boat and pictures were taken, Abby had her first Salmon of the day on, but like they often do, it shook free and the big ohhhhhhhhhh followed. We moved to the next hole and Abby hooked and landed our final Salmon of the morning and very fresh frisky 12 pound buck that fought like a 30 pounder. These fish are very fresh and BBQ worthy right now as well as being full of fighting spunk! It is early in the season but not too many boat are out trying so come out on out and give it try this is the best time of the year on the river.

RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Good
Conner, Dad and I fished the Klamath River for Salmon this afternoon after our morning trip to Redding to get Dad's blood checked. Dad’s blood is good to go for chemo tomorrow. We picked Conner up at lunch time from school and headed over to the river and one hour later Conner had the first Salmon hooked up. We were backtrolling a Luhr Jensen jet diver with a gob of roe, when the 10 pound hen took the bait. Conner was his usual excited self, “Oh yea baby the first Salmon!!!! Oh yea baby what a beautiful Salmon!!! Oh yea oh yea!!!!” after a 10 minute battle, Conner got the hen to the net and in the boat. About 3 hour’s hour later, it was on the BBQ, and dinner for Conner was served. Dad landed another 14-pound hen while bouncing roe about an hour after Conner. Unfortunately, Grandpa struck today, but we will be back at it Wednesday after Chemo tomorrow. Thursday and Friday will be the all Caldwell fishing adventure #2, Uncle Lance, and cousin Eric, will be driving up from Ventura Wednesday, watch out river here we come!!!!!!!!!!!

RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Good
My Dad and I fished the river twice this past week. We have yet to land a Salmon but they are starting to trickle in. The Steelhead and Trout bite is very good, with fish in the 10 to 22-inch range. Backtrolling crawdad plugs or worms behind a jet diver have been the hot ticket. The Salmon bite will  improve by the day, last year, by the 20th of September, the bite was in full swing and it is looking like it will be the same this year.
