Klamath River - November 25th, 2009

RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Great
Fishing for adult Steelhead on the upper Klamath River is getting better by the day. On Monday, my clients Paris and his grandson Wesley landed 30 Steely Trout with a few adults mixed in. Wesley hooked up on a nice 5 to 6 pound Steelhead while back trolling a crawdad plug, but on the first jump it spit the plug clean over the boat. Paris landed a nice 2 to 3 pounder while back trolling a whole threaded night crawler on a jet driver. The guys landed most of the fish while back trolling crawdads plugs or hotshot worm combos. On Tuesday, my brother Lance and my Dad hit the river for a few hours in the evening and they landed 4 adults while back trolling the crawdad plug. These fish were all in the 2 to 4 pound range and 19 to 24 inches in length. Lance landed a nice fat adult while bobbing a worm in the herring tree hole. This is a great time to get out not many people are trying and the weather has been great. Happy Birthday Dad (today) and Lance (yesterday) love you guys!!!

RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Good
Fishing for Winter Steelhead on upper Klamath River (Hatchery to Klamathon bridge) has been very good for half pounders with 1 to 3 adults (20 inches and more than 2 pounds) mixed in. My client on Tuesday caught and released 15 fish, the biggest one in the 2 to 3 pound bracket. We caught fishing on everything from bait to flies to plugs. The hotshot worm combo took honors for hooking the most fish. The big fish was landed while back trolling a Luhr Jensen Jet diver with 4 feet of leader and a whole threaded nightcrawler. The Steelies are scattered all throughout the 5-mile stretch of the drift and each day the hot spot has been changing. The Rebel crawdad plug (red bottom), size 30 hotshots with a worm trailer, Glowbugs, big black stoneflys, copperjohns and side drifting or back bouncing worms have been working to land fish. We have been catching between 10 and 20 fish per trip with the bulk of the fish being in the 1/2 pound plus class (10 to 16 inches).

RECORDED:    38 °   FISHING: Excellent
Yesterday, my Dad and I hit the upper part of the Klamath River and found the Steely Trout bite to be on. We caught and released 27 fish up to 4 pounds while using a variety of methods. The biggest fish was caught while backtrolling a crawdad plug. Bouncing a small piece of night crawler on the bottom caught most of the fish. Straight plugs (hotshots) and side drifted glow bugs, or glow bugs and nymphs under an indicator picked up fish as well. Most of the Steelie Trout were in the 10 to 17 inch range but we did land a few adults more adult Steelies will be coming up as we head into winter so fishing will be great for the next few months.

RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Great
Salmon season has finally wound down and the last three days I have spent targeting steelhead on the fly. I helped fellow guide Jack Trout (jacktrout.com) with his group and had a great time hooking but not always landing Steelhead and Trout up to 24 inches. Winter Steelheading is just getting starting and the season (now thru Feburary) is shaping up to be a great one. If it is anything like this past Salmon season we should all be looking forward to some fantastic fishing trips.

RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Great
As we creep closer to November the Salmon fishing continues to be very good. My clients over the last two days ( Mel and Joe) (Raymond and Katrina) landed close to 15 Salmon and hooked up on nearly 30!! Pretty good for this late in the season. We are still seeing bright fish coming up, as evidence by today's hen's, that were landed by Katrina and Raymond. Katrina had quite the hot hand, as she was 7 for 8 on the day, only missing her last fish, as it let go of the hook, near the boat. Nearly all of the Salmon have were caught while bouncing roe. We did land one fish on the kwikfish plug yesterday. We are starting to see lots of 1/2 pound Steelhead, as well as few adults mixed in. The up coming season ( Now thru January) looks to be outstanding, if you are interested in booking a trip now is a good time to get the day you want. I fish all methods for Steelhead, from bait to flyfishing, and I have all the quality equipment necessary, to get the job done. Give me a call, if you did not have chance to get up for the Salmon season, holiday Steelheading is just around the corner. I also do gift certificates if you are looking for something different this holiday season.

I fished with my good friend and fellow guide Jon Geyer (Jon Geyer Guider Service) today. In a little over 4 hours of fishing we hooked 14 salmon landing 7 of them. Kwikfish plugs and roe were our methods of choice today as well as some light weight 10 pound gear (7ft 9 6 to 12 pound Rogue rod and a Shimano TE GT 51 loaded with 10 pound Yo-Zuri hybrid line), to make it interesting. The fishing is still pretty good even though we are now heading into the final stages of the season. Yesterday and today we hooked a total of 24 Salmon, not bad numbers at all.

I thought I would take the day off today not having any clients but then guilt set in as I took Conner to school this morning. HMMMMMMM guess what what won out. I managed to get some things done before noon, today, but I had it in my mind that I would pick Conner up, after he had lunch and we would hit the river, for his turn at the Salmon. So no sooner did I pick him up, then the weather changed and became rainy. Oh well screw it,, 6 years old dont care about the rain,, apparently neither do 41 year olds LOL!!!!!!! Conner and I hit the river for a few hours we landed 5 out 7 fish. One happy boy and plenty of fresh visual for him to ask questions about,, PRICELESS !! and for those of you who know my son Conner you know all about his questions,, LOL. Along the way we ran into Momma deer and her twis, as well as a pair of young healthy forky horned Bucks. Of course my young hick son asked if we could shoot them and eat them, its stiil Buck season right??? It ended 2 days ago!!! Whew!!! all want do at 530 at night is gut a dear and have to hang it.

The last few days have been darn near perfect; great people, awesome weather and excellent fishing. We are starting to see the big bucksarrive, my friends, family and clients, have been landing at least one 22 pound or better Salmon per trip. Today, my brother inlaw Larry landed a nice 24 pound buck while bobbing roe in the herring tree hole and yesterday my clients Larry and Joey landed 3 Salmon in the 20 pound class. I took my brother inlaw Larry and his ""BUSINESS PARTNER"" Jamie on the river for a few hours today and in that short time they went 6 for 8 on the Salmon. Not bad for first time roe bouncers, my clients Larry Shult and Joey Nunes, on Saturday, landed 6 out 10 and they too were first timers. I have been launching my boat at first light on most of my trips this season and today was the first time since early September that I was in shorts and teeshirt from the start. The weather has been cool most mornings ranging somewhere between 30 and 43, but today felt near 50 and hit a 70 by noon. Salmon fishing should reamain good for at least another10 days, so if your still thinking about giving it a try give me a call, I have a couple of openings this week.

Fishing is so easy you can do it in Heels!!! Just check out the latest pics they speak for themselves. The biggest Salmon so far this season was landed on Friday, a nice 39 inch 27 pound Buck while bouncing roe by my friend Amy Tangedahl of Eugene Or, it was also her first Salmon fishing experience and biggest fish ever. Bouncing and bobbing roe and kwikfish plugs are the trick to hooking up right now.

RECORDED:    65 °   FISHING: Excellent
The last week of fishing on the Klamath River has been great. My clients who all have been wonderful landed the biggest fish and the most fish this past week. My boat saw new highs for the season; my good friend Joe Ulic landed a 38 inch 25 pound Buck, Joe and his longtime friend Tim landed the most Salmon on one trip 18, a 12 and 13 year old Dean and Joe, hooked up on the most Salmon in one trip 26 and my friends Abby and Cy landed the most 20 plus pound fish 2. It has been a good week, my trips have been averaging close to 12 Salmon per day, with a high of 18 and a low 7. The weather has been pretty darn nice with lows of 30's in the morning and reaching 70 in the afternoon. We have been catching Salmon on two methods bouncing roe or backtrolling K-15 kwikfish. Most of the Salmon have been landed by bouncing but the kwikfish bite has been increasing as more bucks show up lately.
