Madison River - September 22nd, 2008
supplied by: West Yellowstone Fly Shop
RECORDED:    53 °   FISHING: Good
Montana

Madison below lakes- Up until yesterday flows out of Hebgen Dam were not under control; it appears some progress has been made and the flows have been dropped to 2,220 cfs and will continue to drop throughout the week. Even with the high water fishing has been decent. Fish have been concentrated closer to the banks, rather than out in the normal late season low water spots. Fish have still been coming up to a variety of small terrestrial patterns like ants, beetles, and hoppers. Baetis activity has been decent on cloudy days. If you get a cloudy day you can do very well if you start off fishing small patterns such as sz. 18-22 pt’s, micro mayflies, annatto mays etc…, as fish move to emergers be prepared to change to small cripples, a small olive comparadun will usually do the trick, and if your lucky enough to not have wind and have duns stay on the surface for awhile you should have a variety of small parachute patterns in olive/dun colors. Don’t forget that fall browns can be taken on the Madison out of the park as well. Red San Juan Worms and Copper Johns can be deadly. Big streamers can also be fished on cloudy days!!!

Madison River YNP- Continued to improve as more fall run browns and rainbows move into the river. Big soft hackles, nymphs, and streamers have all worked. On cloudy days expect baetis activity; it can be a real challenge to take a big migratory on a sz.20 dry fly! Caddis activity will also be present throughout the fall so have a few light colored, fairly large, patterns along. Expect fishing to be best in lower stretches of the river; and as we enter October more fish will concentrate in the upper reaches.

Madison below Hebgen: On August 31st flows out of Hebgen went from 800cfs to over 3,000 cfs due to a malfunction with the dam. Crews are currently working to repair the dam. You will need to approach the river as you would any high water situation. Fish will move closer to the banks to get out of the heavy water. The recent cold weather has water temps to drop; expect best fishing during the middle of the day. Nymphs will be most productive; fish them deep and slow. Micro mayflies, tung bead PT's, $3 dips will all produce. For surface patterns try terrestrial patterns like ants, beetles, and hoppers. Fall baetis hatches will become more frequent as weather cools.

Yellowstone National Park

Madison in the park: Fishing has been fair. Several lake fish have been caught, both rainbows and browns. Cool weather should help send more fish into the system. Fish have been taken on nymphs, soft hackles, small streamers, and big attractor dries. Fishing should improve throughout the month.

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Great
The Madison is fishing well mid-day, but with mostly catches of smaller fish.  The big fish seem to be "here and there," but we expect to see them on hoppers heavily into September.  Try ants tight to the banks and you'll find a few of those larger fish.

Madison River - Upper - July 15th, 2008

RECORDED:    76 °   FISHING: Great
On Fire
The lower Madison is fishing really well right now.  The big trout are eating hard under the surface.  Huz-ur-daddy crayfish, zonkers, and lightning bugs is all you need right now.  We have had some fish attack our strike indicators, but after switching to dries not much positive is happening.  So grit your teeth, fish under the surface, and hang on when the big browns and rainbows run you into your backing.  The upper is lower and clearer right now.  They have been bumping the water all over the place and it has affected the fishing.  If you hit it right the dry fly fishing can be great.  Caddis and PMD's are heavy, and the Salmonflies are almost up to Ruby.  It seems as if everyone is fishing the Upper Madison right now and don't expect to be alone.  The closer you get to the salmonflies the more anglers you are going to see.

The upper Madison is fish able above the West Fork.  The big bugs (Salmonflies) have started on the Lower Madison and with the warmer weather should move above Ennis later this week.  Above the West Fork the river is still high but fishing.  Big junk such as girdle bugs, San Juan worms, pheasant tails, lightning bugs have done the trick.  The dam controllers have backed down the flows all this week and that has made for more consistent fishing.

Madison River - Lower - March 16th, 2007
supplied by: Yellowstone TroutScout Outfitters
RECORDED:    41 °   FISHING: Good
Fishing on the Lower Madison is starting to pick up. Visability is fairly clear - about 2' - 3'.  Flow (CFS) is 1580 and changing  due to additional waters being released from the dam.

Right now, the Lower Madison is offereing much better dry fly fishing that it has over the past couple of weeks due to the warmer weather in south central Montana.  Midge fishing is active, as long as the wind is not.  Our best luck fishing midges was found in slower water, along the banks and channels between the weed beds.  Patterns that worked for us were CDC Hanging Midge, Wilson CDC Midge, Midge Pupas, WD40's (all in size 18 - 20) Sow Bugs (gray, orange and pink in sizes 18 & 20), Zebra Midges (red & black), Rainbow Midge, Midge Larva (gray, red and tan).

Our best results were fishing the bottom and pounding the holes in deeper runs. Patterns that worked were Crazy Charlies, San Juan Worms and Ray
Charles.

As long as the wind stays down and the water levels coming out of the dam don't jump around too much, the fishing should continue to improve.  However, winter in Montana is not over by any stretch and conditions are going to change quite a bit over the next 4 - 6 weeks.  One thing that won't change is the fact that the rainbows are starting their spawning runs and are moving up through the Madison River system.

Madison River - Lower - January 9th, 2007

FISHING: Poor
Well, depending on where you want to go the fishing can be good, or it can be windy and miserable… that is what I found out last week. Below the dam in Beartrap has been far and away the most productive portion of the river right now. The bottom end of the canyon has been pretty windy and miserable, so I might now suggest that as my first choice. Darlington has some fish up and feeding on midges, but the activity was pretty minimal and the wind was definitely a factor. If you go, check the wind out first, that is going to be the determining factor.

Madison River - Upper - January 9th, 2007

FISHING: Fair
Things on the Upper have been pretty cold and windy as well, ice flows are still around Ennis and the better fishing is definitely up higher around 3 Dollar and Slide. The best fishing on this river in the winter is in February before it closes, some midges come off and the dry fly fishing can be pretty decent. For right now, nymphing between the lakes is going to be one of the most productive places in the state, so grab a few of your favorites and make the trip. But probably not this week, check the weather, looks nasty towards the end of the week…

Madison River - Lower - December 30th, 2006

FISHING: Poor
Fished this on the 26th, tried to head up into Beartrap and ended up getting blown off basically. Whipping up whitecaps and blowing the tree's sideways. So that being said I can't tell what the heck was going on... However, I have heard reports that below the dam has been pretty decent, with lots of fish hanging in the runs right below the dam. Expect to see a few folks here and there, but that will probably be your best bet. Things were pretty cold and icy down around Cobblestone, although Darlington could be decent on the right day if you want a challenge.

FISHING: Good
Still haven't made the trek up above Ennis, but continue to hear good reports from guys heading up between the lakes and below Quake. The best midge fishing around takes place below Quake in my opinion, 3 dollar and Slide are great places to go fish some midge larvae and wait for a hatch on a warmer day. Wouldn't be surprised if there are still ice flows from Varney on down, so before you go, check the conditions, and Dan and Nancy at Beartooth are a great resource to know what is going on up there.
