Madison River - Lower - January 15th, 2012
supplied by: Yellow Dog Outfitters
RECORDED:
30 °
FISHING: Good
Winter is finally setting in throughout Montana with a lot of snow falling everywhere. With the last week being pretty mild with temps into the lower 50's fishing was really good for January but will taper with snow conditions predicted for several days now. Obviously a very welcome and needed change!

Madison River - Lower - December 6th, 2011

FISHING: Good
I spent the beginning of this week in South Western Mt. taking care of some business. I got there Sunday night and it was cold. I was busy all day Monday, and it was cold. Tuesday was my day to fish, so I called up a Ashby B and Tom I, and we got after it around eleven. We pulled up to the Madison, and like we thought it was a combination of slush and anchor ice. We continued our truck ride to the dam. Apparently there was a outfitters meeting in Ennis, so we found a bunch of anglers on this lone section of open river. No big deal, we continued to drive down and found an unoccupied, slow, deep winter trench that we could fish in close proximity to the truck. 3 p.m., first cast, fish on. Falling for the sow bug was a little 16 inch chrome brown. Ashby poked a couple bows, Tom stripped one up. Having the truck/warming shack close was key. After warming up, I tricked one or two bows, rolled a good brown, and we packed it up. All and all it was fun to fish a spot niether of us had in a while. I would consider fishing it all day with studded wading boots. The fish are eatting, and you will be hard pressed to find open water around that part of the state right now. The Mo. is in the full swing of winter fishing. Reports of nice walleyes being caught mixed in with lots of bows. Browns are chrome for the most part now, giving you great head shakes and unmistakable tugs. Don't be lazy when it comes to tailwater fishing this winter, its been worth it.

Madison River - Lower - July 14th, 2011
supplied by: Montana TroutWranglers
RECORDED:
84 °
FISHING: Good
The lower keeps dropping and improving. It is more green than brown and each day keeps getting better. Crayfish and streamers and flashy nymphs such as lightning bugs and Kyle's golden stones in sizes 12-14. Not much top action with the exception of some small splashy rises. Get out there early to avoid the bikini hatch starting from noon on. It shouldn't be too long before this river starts to catch fire.

Madison River - Upper - July 14th, 2011
supplied by: Montana TroutWranglers
RECORDED:
81 °
FISHING: Excellent
The salmonflies are river wide and the fishing has been very good. From Lyons down they are eating both on the top and bottom. If you want numbers fish below the surface, if you want excitement on the surface fish on top. You might have some slower periods, but the fish are definetly looking up and interested. Girdle bugs and goldenstones rule the subsurface, your favorite salmonfly pattern such as rogue river stones or sunken stones rule the top. The river is still high, and not totally clear, but now is the time to fish this river.

Madison River - July 27th, 2009
supplied by: Tim Tollett's Frontier Anglers
RECORDED:
87 °
FISHING: Excellent
The Madison is fishing quite well on Caddisflies, and yellow Stoneflies. Our daughter, Tamara, is doing stream surveys on the Madison this summer so she keeps us up to date on a daily basis. She tells us that the dry fly fishing in the McAtee section has been very good. And up by 3 Dollar Bridge both nymphs and dries have been working real well.
Best Flies: PMX's in lime, yellow, orange and royal - sz. 8-16, Twisted Sisters in tan and yellow - sz. 10 -14, Troth's Elk Hair Caddis -sz. 12-16, Crystal Humpy - sz. 12-16, MoJom Hopper in yellow and tan sz. 8-14, Grand Hoppers in yellow and tan - sz. 8-14, and on the windy (ha - the wind always blows on the Madison) stormy days try a big sz. 2 or 4 Zonker.

The upper Madison is fish able above the West Fork. The big bugs (Salmonflies) have started on the Lower Madison and with the warmer weather should move above Ennis later this week. Above the West Fork the river is still high but fishing. Big junk such as girdle bugs, San Juan worms, pheasant tails, lightning bugs have done the trick. The dam controllers have backed down the flows all this week and that has made for more consistent fishing.

Madison River - Lower - March 16th, 2007
supplied by: Yellowstone TroutScout Outfitters
RECORDED:
41 °
FISHING: Good
Fishing on the Lower Madison is starting to pick up. Visability is fairly clear - about 2' - 3'. Flow (CFS) is 1580 and changing due to additional waters being released from the dam.
Right now, the Lower Madison is offereing much better dry fly fishing that it has over the past couple of weeks due to the warmer weather in south central Montana. Midge fishing is active, as long as the wind is not. Our best luck fishing midges was found in slower water, along the banks and channels between the weed beds. Patterns that worked for us were CDC Hanging Midge, Wilson CDC Midge, Midge Pupas, WD40's (all in size 18 - 20) Sow Bugs (gray, orange and pink in sizes 18 & 20), Zebra Midges (red & black), Rainbow Midge, Midge Larva (gray, red and tan).
Our best results were fishing the bottom and pounding the holes in deeper runs. Patterns that worked were Crazy Charlies, San Juan Worms and Ray Charles.
As long as the wind stays down and the water levels coming out of the dam don't jump around too much, the fishing should continue to improve. However, winter in Montana is not over by any stretch and conditions are going to change quite a bit over the next 4 - 6 weeks. One thing that won't change is the fact that the rainbows are starting their spawning runs and are moving up through the Madison River system.

Madison River - Lower - January 9th, 2007
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Poor
Well, depending on where you want to go the fishing can be good, or it can be windy and miserable… that is what I found out last week. Below the dam in Beartrap has been far and away the most productive portion of the river right now. The bottom end of the canyon has been pretty windy and miserable, so I might now suggest that as my first choice. Darlington has some fish up and feeding on midges, but the activity was pretty minimal and the wind was definitely a factor. If you go, check the wind out first, that is going to be the determining factor.

Madison River - Upper - January 9th, 2007
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
Things on the Upper have been pretty cold and windy as well, ice flows are still around Ennis and the better fishing is definitely up higher around 3 Dollar and Slide. The best fishing on this river in the winter is in February before it closes, some midges come off and the dry fly fishing can be pretty decent. For right now, nymphing between the lakes is going to be one of the most productive places in the state, so grab a few of your favorites and make the trip. But probably not this week, check the weather, looks nasty towards the end of the week…

Madison River - Lower - December 30th, 2006
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Poor
Fished this on the 26th, tried to head up into Beartrap and ended up getting blown off basically. Whipping up whitecaps and blowing the tree's sideways. So that being said I can't tell what the heck was going on... However, I have heard reports that below the dam has been pretty decent, with lots of fish hanging in the runs right below the dam. Expect to see a few folks here and there, but that will probably be your best bet. Things were pretty cold and icy down around Cobblestone, although Darlington could be decent on the right day if you want a challenge.
