Madison River - Upper - April 6th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here]

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1010 C.F.S.  The upper river has several closure in affect now and you will want to check the regulations before you go.  Basically the regulations are as follows:  From Hebgen Dam to Quake Lake is open to fishing.  From Quake Lake outlet to McAttee Bridge is closed until the third saturday in May.  From McAttee Bridge to The Ennis Town Bridge is open to fishing.  From the Ennis Town Bridge to the Lake is closed until the third Saturday in May. If you have any questions about the closures please give us a call or call the Bozeman Fish Wildlife and Parks office.  Fishing on the river between Hebgen and Quake Lakes has been good with nymphs and dead drifted streamer patterns.  Eggs and Worms are always a good bet on this short strecth of river.  There has been very little surface activity, but you may see a fish or two rising to midges.  Some rainbows are starting to stack up at the mouth of the river and we should see them move into the river in the next few weeks.  There is still a lot of snow on this strecth of the river so if you plan to access the bottom end of the river you will need some sort of transportation that can get you over the snow.  The river from McAttee Bridge to Ennis is also fishing well with nymphs and stripping some streamers has produced some good results as well.  Most people think that fall is the best time to strip streamers but I have had some very good days in the early spring stripping them as well.  Dead drifting large unweighted Sculpin patterns has also accounted for some nice fish as of late.  Floating is the most productive method for stripping streamers.  If you are wade fishing I would suggest fishing the river near the town of Ennis, a large unweighted Sculpin pattern trailed with an egg pattern has been producing some good results.  The key to fishing the Sculpins to match the color of your fly to the color of the sky.  If it is bright and sunny fish a light colored fly, if the skies are dark fish a dark colored fly.  Sculpins adapt their color to the light that surrounds them.  This is a great time of year to catch a large fish on the upper river.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Zoo Cougar #2-6, McCune's Sculpin #2-6, Double Bunnies #4-6, Kiwi Muddlers #2-6.

Flows on the lower are 1430 C.F.S below the Powerhouse and 107 C.F.S. below the dam.  The Lower Madison has been red hot this past week.  There has been substantial midge activity and there are plenty of fish up feeding on the surface.  Many of the fish on the surface are smaller fish but you can expect to see a few nicer fish mixed in.  After a long winter of staring at strike indicators it is always refreshing to see a fish eat a dry.  Wind has been a factor with the hatch but we have still been seeing some fish on the surface even on the windy days.  Cloudy weather is really the key to the dry fly activity.  Bright sunny weather will have good hatches, the fish are just less likely to move into the shallower water to feed on them.  If you don't find rising fish try fishing a small bugger trailed with either an egg pattern or a small mayfly nymph.  Lightning bugs, black copper john's and wonder nymphs have all been producing subsurface.  Get out while the weather is overcast, you will definetely enjoy it.

Flows on the lower are 1440 C.F.S at the Powerhouse and 124 C.F.S. coming out of the dam.; The lower has been fishing very well on overcast calm days.; Midge hatches have been strong and the dry fly fishing has been very good in select areas along the river.; The dry fly fishing has only been good on the cloudy windless days.; If it is bright and sunny out you will have to change tactics and look to the deeper water where the fish feel more secure; Nymphing has been producing some larger fish than the dry fly activity, but we have been looking at indicators for a long time and it is a great change to see a fish eat on the surface.; Keep your nymphs on the smaller side, egg patterns and small midge larvae of mayfly imitations have been producing more than the larger sculpin and crayfish patterns.; Look for the streamer fishing to start to improve as well, the water temps are warming slightly with warmer nighttime temps and this will spur the larger fish into chasing down a bigger meal.; The lower has been fishing great, the wind has hampered the efforts a bit though; Get out and give it a try and don't forget to pick up a new fishing licensee for the year.;

The flows at Hebgen Dam are 888 C.F.S. The flows below the Westfork are around 975 C.F.S. The Upper river closed to fishing on Sunday so you will need to either fish the short section between Hebgen and Quake Lakes or stay on the section of river between McAttee Bridge and the Ennis Town Bridge. The Channels just upstream of 8 mile Ford have been fishing very well as of late with dead drifted sculpins and goldenstone nymphs.Some larger fish have been taken and if you are looking for some different fishing this has been a good bet lately.The fishing between the lakes is heating up and we should start to see some of the rainbows that live in Quake lake move into the river system to get ready for the spawning activity that takes place in a few months.There is a lot of snow in this area so be ready to do some post holing to get to the river.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Griffith's Gnats #16-18, Mother Shucker #18-20.

Flows on the lower are 1120 C.F.S. below the powerhouse and they have 109 C.F.S. come out of the gates at the dam.  The river just below the dam has been a hot spot over the past couple of weeks, however the river below the Bear Trap Canyon wilderness area has started to fish very well.  Below the dam nymphs have been the mainstay with small midge larvae, egg patterns, and rubberleg stone fly patterns.  There have been a few fish feeding on midges below the dam, but if you want a better shot at rising fish stay below the Canyon.  We had some great dry fly fishing below the Bear Trap during mid week when the skies were overcast and there were some slight snow flurries.  Cloudy days with little to no wind are producing some good mid winter dry fly activity.  The fish that are up on the midges are not the largest fish in the river, but it is a great break from looking at a strike indicator.  Nymphing will produce some larger fish and egg patterns seem to be the way to go on the lower right now.  Weather will be the biggest factor over the next several months on the lower river, if the skies are cloudy and the wind is calm head out to the river.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 827 C.F.S.  If you are willing to make the 90 mile drive you should do it.  The fishing near Raynold's Pass has been excellent over the past ten days.  Nymphing has been very productive with egg patterns and small nymphs.  There has also been some fairly consistent midge hatches and if the wind is calm you should run into a few fish feeding on the surface.  Various colored egg patterns have really been producing well and you will have some luck on pheasant tails and copper johns if you stick with them.  If you have an egg on in combination with your small nymphs you will get most of your fish on the eggs.  The upper has been some great fishing as of late, get out and enjoy it because the river closes to fishing at the end of Febuary.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Griffith's Gnats #16-18, Mother Shucker #18-20.

Flows on the lower are 1140 C.F.S.  The best reports have been from just below the Ennis dam.  There is some slush ice in the river on the colder days but most days the river has been in pretty good shape.  Most of the fisherman have been up below the dam where they only have 2 gates open and the river is small.  The fish are concentrated in the deeper slower pools.  Egg patterns and anything red have been the killer combination below the dam.  There have been quite a few people fishing in this area so if you venture out expect to see some other people fishing.  I have also had two very reliable reports from anglers fishing in the lake just above the dam and they have had some very good luck in the past week.  Fish a sink tip line and a natural or white zonker with a very slow retrieve.  Most people skip over the lake just above the dam and head for the moving water in the river.  If you get a chanve give the lake a try, you may be pleasantly surprised with what you catch.  As for the river in the canyon and the area around warm springs we have has very few reports.  Sean and Chris did fish at cobblestone the other day and they had marginal fishing to say the least.  If you do not want to take the drive I would suggest taking some time to hike into the canyon and find some of the deeper holes.
