Madison River - Lower - November 25th, 2005
supplied by: Yellowstone Angler
FISHING: Great
The reports from the Lower Madison have been very good recently.  The big browns that the Lower is known for are definitely on the prowl, and spawning in the many side channels.  Streamer fishing is the most effective technique right now for these brutes.  Try an Olive Zonker or any of your favorite crayfish patterns.  Don't count small nymphs and eggs out yet though, and there's a chance of seeing some Fall Baetis on the water as well.  These fish seem to congregate in specific areas so if you find one big guy it may be worth sticking around and prospecting the water close by.  Some of our guides really like this water and would be happy to show it to you if you book a day with them.

The Lower Madison has been running milky for the past three weeks. The river is starting to green up a bit and is in much better shape than it was a week ago. The dirty water was most likely caused by heavy winds combined with dying weeds in Ennis Lake. The brown trout are finishing up their spawning activity and dead drifting streamers with egg patterns should still produce good results throughout the winter months. We should see improving conditions over the next couple weeks

The Upper Madison has been fishing very well on the upper reaches of the river. The river between Hebgen and Quake Lake has been the best area for anglers wanting to get into fish. There are still a few sporadic hatches of baetis on the warmer afternoons and fish from Quake Lake have moved into the river in good numbers. Nymphing has been very productive, but you will have to deal with a lot of whitefish for every trout you catch. Streamers have been good near the mouth of the river as fish move back and forth between the lake and the river. Below Quake lake the nymph fishing has been good and you may find a fish or two rising to midges in the quite water near shore and behind the large boulders. Closer to Ennis anglers have been taking fish using full sinking lines and swinging large streamers through the deep holes. There has been very little angling pressure due to hunting season and with the warm sunny weather anglers have been plenty comfortable for a long day of fishing.

Fall and the lower Madison go hand and hand. The large brown trout that reside in the lower Madison are starting to spawn and you can capitalize on the aggressive actions that they take during the spawning season. The actively spawning fish are easy targets and we would ask that you leave them alone and target the fish that are not actively spawning. Most of the primary spawners are fish in the 15 to 18 inch range and if you fish below the spawning fish you could hook into the larger fish that are past their spawning age. These larger fish have been their and done that and have used focused their actions towards growth rather than to reproducing. The fish in the 25 inch or better range will be taking advantage of the free meal and can be taken on egg patterns or streamers during the fall. There has also been a few hatches of baetis and midges in the afternoon hours and if you run into to it take advantage of the last of the dry fly fishing for several months.

The Upper Madison has been fishing very well from Varney Bridge to the town of Ennis. Streamers stripped off the bank have been taking some nice browns and if you are looking for rainbows head below with an egg pattern and small black midge larvae. The rainbows are sitting in the deep holes feeding on the eggs that the browns have been laying in their spawning nest. The section of river between Hebgen and Quake lakes has been very good as well. There are plenty of fish that have moved from the lake into the river for the fall. There have also been some decent hatches of Baetis which can provide some fun late season dry fly fishing.

We have not had a lot of reports from the Madison this week but several anglers did fill us in on their fishing this week. A couple of anglers ran into some baetis hatches in the afternoon and did catch a decent number of smaller fish on dry flies. Another group of anglers hiked into the Bear Trap Canyon Wilderness area and caugth several large brown trout on dead drifted streamers with San Juan Worms trailed off the back. Another group of three anglers floated from Warm Springs to Black's Ford and did well stripping JJ specials and Brown Buggers on floating lines. They took several nice browns and one large rainbow on a stipped fly. The streamer fishing should pick up and your best days will be on cloudy overcast skies. If you are hiking into the Bear Trap and see spawning fish please give them a fair shot at spawning and filling the river with fish for the future. Good luck and enjoy.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

The Upper Madison has been my river of choice the past couple of weeks. We have been catching some very nice brown trout stripping streamers from the boat. Large black bunny flies have been our best producers except on sunny days. The fishing has been much better with cloud cover than it has on bright sunny days. If it is sunny put on nymphs and ply the depths for the fish that will be holding deeper. If you want to get in a few more days of dry fly action head to the upper end of the river where baetis activity has still been decent. The section between Hebgen and Quake Lakes has been fishing well with Baetis activity and nymphing with San Juan Worms, Egg Patterns and midge larvae.

The Lower Madison has been fishing well this week and has been one of the favorite spots with anglers stopping into the store. The chance for catching a big fish on the lower is good and wading access is great. Dead Drifting Sculpin and Crayfish patterns and trailing a small lighting bug or bead head pheasant tail has been the most productive method for taking fish. There have been a couple of anglers who have still been taking some fish on hoppers and most of the reports have been from wading anglers who have hiked into the Bear Trap Canyon Wilderness area. If you are planning a hike into the canyon you should be on the lookout for Black Bears and Poison Ivy. The Rattlesnakes have not been much of an issue of late but there have been several bears sighted on the hillsides above the river. If you head out on a cloudy day you should see a strong hatch of Blue Wings and the fish should start to look for flies on top. I would also suggest stripping the streamers if you get some clouds. The fish tend to chase a fly down more on cloudy days.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

The Upper Madison has been fishing well. There are still a few fish that will look for a hopper, but beetle patterns are starting to produce some results as the leaves change colors and fall to the shore. Streamer fishing has been fair with lots of fish chasing the fly, but they are having commitment issues. We have had lots of fish chasing a very quickly stripped streamer, however they have only been chasing it. Nymphing the deeper runs near Ennis has been productive with a Tan Sculpin pattern trailed with a sparkle pupae or small mayfly nymph. If you are a wading angler head to the Three Dollar Bridge area where the fish have been interested in beetles and baetis. Nymphing has also been good in this area. Another good area for wade fishing this time of year is the section between Hebgen and Quake Lake. The fish are starting to move out of the lake a bit and into the river. We had one group that had some good fishing with streamers right near the area that the river enters into Quake Lake.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Red Legged Hopper # 8-10, Marshmellow Hopper # 8-10, Turk's Taranutla # 8-10, Gorilla Hopper # 8-10, Parachute Hopper # 8-10, PMX Royal # 12-14, Royal Trude # 12-14, Parahcute Ant # 14-16, FLying Ant # 14-16, Red Copper John # 14-18, Bead Head Pheasant Tail # 12-16, King Prince # 12-14, McCunes Sculpin # 2-4, White Zonker # 2-4, Tan Kiwi Muddler # 2-4.
